Description

Friday the 13th is coming up and it coincides with the date of the next Release Something! Day! Talk about a coincidence!

So, some of you might not know what a Release Something! Day (RS!D) is. Basically, it's a day where you release something - anything! - in order to get feedback from the community. Release Something! Day used to be a regularly occurring event in the days of yore, back when the community had a sticky issue of never releasing any games or demos (because perfectionists I guess?). RS!D was created as a way to encourage sharing, collaboration, feedback, and content in the community. The aim is to truly try to capture the spirit of releasing something. It is not about prepping a major release, or making something in a fury to have something new to show for the event. It is about showing your works-in-progress, getting feedback, and checking out what other people are working on. Like a snapshot of RMN's development community.

What kinds of things can be shown? Music, tiles, sprites, graphics of any type, gameplay (videos of gameplay tests are good), tech demos, demos - even completed games (but don't strive for a finished product; that's not the point of RS!D). Let the feedback work for you. Although, there are some limitations to RMN's event profile - only game downloads can be submitted to the "official" event submission. But that's okay! I will manually compile all of the other types of submissions and update the event page.

So, some of you might not know what a Release Something! Day (RS!D) is. Basically, it's a day where you release something - anything! - in order to get feedback from the community. There will even be a podcast covering the releases.

1. If you are posting a game demo or download, make a Gameprofile (if you haven't already), upload the file, and submit the download to this event (by clicking the Submit button in the upper left)
2. If you are posting other media (like screenshots or music or graphics or videos) submit it to the site like normal and then post a link to it in the comments

There will be a badge worth 10 MS for releasing something. Best feedback givers will also get a badge worth 20 MS. Because the feedback is what counts this time.

There might even be a podcast!

I used to have a lot of "secret" (read: unrealized) projects, but I scrapped them in order to get something done.
I've got perhaps one of the most unsecret project(s) ever. Being not secret is good because then you can gauge the response of your audience way early in development.

Looks like I'm actually going to be able to at least have 3 images for a game page yay.
Does anyone remember when I had that 'secret' game with hidden blogs but posts on that blog would show up on the frontpage feed but clicking them would lead to Anti-Climbing Paint?

Now THAT was a secret game!

How early is way early? I've been holding off on talking about my project because I was a) unsure if I was even capable of doing it and b) wanted enough content so the audience could have more of a reaction than just, "Was that it?"

I mean, talk is cheap. If I announce that I'm doing something and only have half a basic map and an unedited battle system, that wouldn't be enough to justify an announcement, would it? Plus, if you don't have that many features implemented, what is there to critique?

I'm thinking too hard about this, aren't I?

I'd say the right time to reveal and publicize a project is when there's enough substance in it that the players (or viewers, if there's no demo) can get a feel for the final result. Once your core is stable, you can push it out there and get feedback on it - which may help you figure out where to go with the specifics.

Still, as far as promotion and publicity goes, first impressions are important... you don't want players to remember the things that aren't relevant in the demo. Artwork is a pretty big culprit of this. One thing I've learned for prototypes is it's often better to have obviously placeholder graphics (scribbles, squares) instead of half-done or unpolished work. There's a chance early players will see incomplete art and mistake it for the real thing, and it'll stick in their head better than simple placeholders would.
I may or may not have a super triple top secret project involving Haggar, Megaman, and Sabin on a world spanning quest to find and perform various wrestling moves on Godtrain
How early is way early?..

The moment the idea is in your head. You can just talk to other people and see what they think.

..unsure if I was even capable of doing it..

Only one way to find out.

..wanted enough content so the audience could have more of a reaction than just, "Was that it?"

Valve's method was to do the least amount of work possible for something to be playable (they put in orange box placeholder textures, etc.) to see if the gameplay of a level or element of the game would work or not against feedback. The wisdom here being if you wait and THEN get feedback, there is much less you can change than if you got feedback as early as possible.

If I announce that I'm doing something and only have half a basic map and an unedited battle system, that wouldn't be enough to justify an announcement, would it? Plus, if you don't have that many features implemented, what is there to critique?

Exactly. You're asking a ton of questions you don't know the answer to. That's why you test ideas and get feedback.

I thought Ruby Wolf was going to be a too-simple piece of crap, but I didn't give myself time to go through proper procedures. All the comments on the game profile imply it was a good idea flawed by me rushing it out. So even if you rush something out you think is crap, you can know if the overall gameplay would be good or not had you invested time.

One thing I've learned for prototypes is it's often better to have obviously placeholder graphics (scribbles, squares) instead of half-done or unpolished work.

This I recommend. Valve wrote "Wall 05" and "Rails 02" on the blank orange and white box texture. This comes back to help yourself because then you can see the relevant asset and know what you're supposed to draw on top of it without having to go back and check.

I didn't know that about Valve. Maybe I'm just nervous since I've never shown anything off that wasn't completed. I'm more of a "see for yourself," kind of person, but I really do need to change that mentality.

Which is why I love events like this.

Oh, we can submit stuff now? I thought was had to wait until the day to release it?

I'm not done with my submission yet. I was just curious.
You do. I believe she's celebrating over her game page being accepted. ^.^

But yes, hold off your releases until the actual day.
I might release a video of some sorts showcasing custom GFX. Might. The time frame is too tight to release an actual demo, orz. Btw, this months marks the 2nd Friday the 13th in a row. 0_o
Holy! This is only a few days away?

I wonder if I can finish two towns and two dungeons in just a few days? HMMM....

I think I might just upload a demo file for the battle system I've been playing with, with a few example bosses. I don't think I want to make a game page yet, 'cuz I'm still playing around with the art, music, and story and I'm not ready to show any of that off :P
So much to do in the next three days. Woof.

That's what I'm going to do, for exactly the same reason.

I'm making a short tutorial level and, if I have time, an arena mode similar to Golden Sun's battle mode.
My team and I were just talking about asking RMN folks to review our Kickstarter page for ethnic hero face-sets (the page isn't published; it's just for feedback).

Not sure if this would be appropriate for this event...? If not, we'll just post the preview link somewhere in the Forum.
