Super RMN Bros. 2 is a community event where everybody makes 2D Mario platformer levels which then all get put into one game: Super RMN Bros. 2! The tool used for this is Super Mario Bros. X v1.3, a PC Engine made to emulate the Mario games made on the NES and SNES. This event is a followup of the previous Super RMN Bros. event, which was a great success (submission-wise, at least)! Whip out those old Mario level drawing you made when you were eight! Live the dream of making your own Mario game! Show once again that RMNers can do more than just make RPGS!

What You Need to Participate

Super Mario Bros. X v1.3, available at the DONWLOAD NOW! link. This is the latest version of SMBX with new features like Ice Flowers and different playable characters. Make sure you download the correct version, the file size should be ~37.6MB. It has everything you need to get started from the player, the editor, and a sample world.

You can also download the SMBX Graphics Pack by Red Yoshi at the bottom of the page. It has a ton of Mario Brothers graphics that you can use in your level with a simple copy+paste!

Just What is Super Mario Brothers X?

Super Mario Bros X is a freeware game engine by Redigit geared towards having the gameplay features and physics of Mario 3 and Super Mario World while adding a ton of cool features and not having to deal with the restrictions of the old (S)NES hardware. Since we first had RMN Bros using 1.2 Beta 4 SMBX has move onto version 1.3 adding new content such as some of the Koopalings, new features such as being able to customize NPCs, and general fixes such as reducing lag in the engine. If you really want to see what SMBX can do, check out these videos showcasing SMBX's capabilities!

Games are distributed as a world with levels package they can add to Super Mario Bros X and play from the main game. So far there's no way to make a self contained game so all players will need to download SMBX in order to even play the game. The game does come with a large set of graphics and sounds like the RPG Maker RTPs so everybody at least has a large number of platformer resources to work with (and it'll keep the download of the actual game itself small).

You can view the RMN engine page for SMBX here.

HELP!

The editor can be tricky to use, especially for beginners. You can ask questions on our SMBX Help thread on our forums! If you have any questions go there for some tips or helpful links.

We also have a tutorials section on RMN for SMBX. As of now it's pretty empty but hopefully members will submit more over time.

There's also the official SMBX forums filled with much more knowledgable people than here.

Submission Rules

  • Levels must be compatible with the official release of SMBX 1.3 . aka Use SMBX 1.3 .
  • All submissions must be compressed. Downloading *.lvl files is twice the headache than a *.zip or *.rar file. I'm not even going to bother with anything that isn't compressed.
  • Each individual submission can't exceed 1MB compressed. You can fill it up with all the custom music or graphics you want but a submission can't exceed this size.
  • There is no limit to the number of levels you can submit.
  • Rate the difficulty of the level on a scale of 1 to 5, with 1 being easy and 5 being hard.

Level Rules

  • The end of level marker is always a star. Each level can only have one star in it. Stars give a progress indicator throughout the game and for individual levels and since all levels will be available at the start of the game Stars are the best way for players to know what levels they've already done.
  • The player who got the star can't die after getting the star.
  • Water and waterfalls are swimmable as per Mario Bros 3. (No Mario 2 and it's waterfalls don't count). If you want lethal liquids stick with red lava. This is for clarity for players. Blue = Swimmable, Red = Danger!
  • You can't finish a level with a Yoshi. This is to prevent players from bringing Yoshis from one level to another and they drastically redefine what a player can do. You can force this by having a pipe/door/warp of some sort that doesn't allow Yoshis prior to any exit.
  • The player can't enter a no-win situation. At any point where the player is safe they must be able to complete the level.
  • Multiple characters are allowed. (SMBX v1.3 allows the player to play as Mario, Luigi, Toad, Peach or Link.)
  • Collectathons are not allowed. SMBX has no way of tracking what items you've collected and Mario takes too much damage to allow such a level.

Level Quality

  • Levels that don't meet a minimum level of quality will be rejected.
  • Levels must be complete and stars must be possible to acquire.
  • If you are creating an autoscrolling level please check the Autoscrolling Tutorial for a guide of how to do it. Using scrolling layers leads to physics and collision issues and levels with these issues will be rejected.
  • If a level plays like something you'd expect from a Kaizo-style romhack it will be rejected. Go start your own project if you want yet another impossible Mario game. We're shooting for fun platforming action Mario style that doesn't require precognition, time manipulation, or godlike reaction to beat.
  • Levels can't cause SMBX to reach a volatile or glitchy state nor can they cause level/section wide slowdown in SMBX.
  • Participants who submitted rejected levels will be notified of such, the cause of rejection, and a period to correct issues.

Compilation

  • All levels will be available at the start of the game. There is no requirement to complete one level to unlock others.
  • Yes it will be a world map. (No hub world!)
  • Eight worlds, one Mario! (or Luigi, or Toad, or Peach, or Link!)

You must be logged in to sign up for Super RMN Bros. 2.

Alright, just submitted the final version of Yoshi Plains. I'm pretty happy with it, considering that it was my first level. I'll probably be experimenting with the editor until Super RMN Bros. 3 starts so that I can make better levels then.

Added "Let's Get High!" and "Memories of 8-Bit"
Tried to make these levels like old school mario levels. Nothing fancy. Didn't have the energy or time for fancy. They'll be decent starter levels though!
I still cannot figure out why there are two Clown in the Clouds levels under my name, I only have one in my locker. As far as I know, they are the same file, but why there are two, I don't know.

Now it is time for last minute level playing:

author=Faenon
Uploaded my level "Beanstalk". Difficulty 3/5 :)

Most fun with two players, as it's part of a two player game I'm designing, but still works well with one!

Climb the beanstalks (vines) to the castle in the clouds to rescue the maiden who sleeps there...

Would make a good first castle or World 1-8 I reckons. Please tell me what you think!

Looking forward to seeing it in a Brickroad Let's Play one day maybe, if it's good enough...

Faenon, I am in the process of playing your level. My schedule today is VERY packed so I don't think I will get a review up until tomorrow.

Oloepoia, I would download and play your final version of Yoshi Plains (and all the previous versions of it), but I don't have a software that can open .rar files, sorry for the inconvience. :(
Updated Galaxy Slide. It is now playable so you don't have to lose your power-up!
Let's Get High
difficulty: 1/5
SMB3 climb & swim level
1. 1UP in a speaker box is too blatant.
2. Too many clouds clumped together at the top.
3. Bricks + clouds just doesn't feel right unless there's a castle.
4. Super RMN Bros 2 felt like I read it backward going up.
5. Pipe entrances are set in the middle and not at the bottom.
6. Halfway point should be right in front of the swim level
7. Felt short. It wasn't, but it felt that way.
8. The arrow at the start points right, yet you go up.

Memories of 8 Bit
difficulty: 1.1/5
SMB1 old school overworld & underground
1. going in pipes is messed up. Put your entrances and exits on the ground.
2. Too many 1UPs down the slide. 15 1UPs is a bit much. Why stop there?
3. It doesn't actually feel old school. It feels different. Sure you used SMB1 tiles & enemies, but you didn't use them like the original used them.
4. Spikeavator was a good touch.
5. Mushrooms for the sake of mushrooms on the trees.
6. The tree stems are blocks. There's a background for that.
7. I feel like there should be a secret 1UP in the brick staircase... if you didn't already have 16 1UPs in the level.

Yoshi Plains
difficulty: 0.7/5
SMW Yoshi overworld
1. Swim box is too high. You can swim in air.
2. Needs to have more challenge. Everything is too easy for Yoshi.
3. Felt like the background should be from SMW, due to the tiles being from SMW.

Beanstalk
difficulty: 4.2/5
SMW beanstalk climb
1. Make the mushrooms stand still.
2. I've been waiting for someone to make a level like this.
3. Recolor the odd beanstalk to red so you get some consistancy.
4. I don't think you need the warp on, because the bullet bills make a train.
5. Mystery mushroom doesn't seem to do anything.
6. Mushrooms for the sake of mushrooms.
7. Wow the castle at the top looks crappy. I'd take a screen shot & people could speculate.
8. HA I start out the boss fight getting slammed by the boss. How cheap.
9. Start the boss a lot further away, in fact have a lil sprint before the boss.
10. Zelda and a star, what a magical combination

Ancient Ruins
difficulty: 5/5
SMB1 castle
1. It looks strange having the blocks under ground. Make them in the background. extending out of the ground like SMB3 does.
2. You can put the poison shroom back
3. You made the firebars longer didn't you.
4. Best to pick Princess or Toad to deal with the firebars.
5. Now that you put a powerup after the halfway point, you took away the halfway point... uggg.

Hell's Mansion
difficulty: 2/5
SMW Castle
1. Ah I remember how ugly this is. Much hasn't changed.
2. Dirt over a pipe... Change it to something else like blocks. 2 blocks covering the pipe instead of dirt.
3. You can climb over the blocks.
4. Did you even change this or did I not download the proper one?
5. I don't think you updated the file.
6. You have too many enemy and block combinations. Almost something from each Mario game and it doesn't look good.
7. Mansions are houses, not castles.

{Yoshi plains, Beanstalk, Brickroad's revenge.}
Edit: Thanks for playing!
My final challange is ready.

IT'S ALWAYS BEEN MY DREAM TO RUIN ONE OF THESE!!!

That took me a lot of coding!

EDIT: Lol, didn't catch the word 'ruin' until after I posted this

Bouncy Bouncy
Difficulty: 3/5
NSMB Springboard Level (From World 9)
Very fun. I don't know why everyone hated it! I had fun and beat it on my first try.
1. The three banzai bills on top of eachother are ugly. Here, take this King Bill Graphic!
2. That's actually all I could think of that's wrong. Good work!
Just played Davenport's latest. Here are my thoughts and suggestions.

Temple of No Return
Difficulty: 4/5
SMB3 Pyramid level
1. What was the point of the two boss rooms by the star? I didn't get a reward for beating them and could have easily skipped them.
2. Good design. You've come a long way.
3. More boss rooms without rewards or meaning. Some of them jump out at you, too.
4. In the room with Ludwig von Koopa the quicksand makes it impossible to escape the trap wall. Maybe some platforms over it? (I know there are already platforms but when you use them to get over there they go away)
5. It was fun and hard. Don't delete this!

Robotink's HQ
Difficulty: 1/5
1. All 134 doors let to the SAME 3 rooms! Most of them just dumped you in the lava!
2. This level went on FOREVER!
Should be rejected.
Just updated Koopa Bros. Tower and Crystal Cave. Lots of little changes were made.
Turns out I am not as busy as I thought I was.

Here's the review of...
Beanstalk
1. Make the starting mushrooms stand still. In the NPC box there is an option "don't move", check it.
2. The ? mushroom does nothing
3. Add some decoration to the first part of the level, all I see is a platform and a giant vine. Add trees and such and what not and yor.
4. One leaf, thats all I get. Replace the ice flower with a tanooki.
5. I loved your level. Then I got to the castle. Don't start out with a boss fight. Add a hallway where mario has to jump over fireballs and run under thwomps. Then add a pipe, which leads to a long dash hallway, into the boss fight room.
6. Seriously, Metriod, Mario, AND Zelda Graphics all in one room!

I think the Idea of your level is VERY creative, and could defiantly be seen in a Nintendo game. Just a few edits and I will be perfect!

Edit: I just realized something. None of my levels have a text file telling the difficulty of the level. AGGGG.... I an horrible at rating difficulty anyway. Should I just send the difficulty that shortstar tells me when he reviews my levels????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Did you try rebooting your PC....jk!

Has it ever worked? if yes, when did it stop working? What OS? You may have checked, but in the volume mixer you can mute the sound of an application. Is it the same thing with headphones and speakers?

Go to SMBX's website. That's their problem not ours. Coming here with that problem is like if you went into a supermarket and said I want to trade stocks of Kellogs.
