THE END OF RM2K/RM2K3?

The ability to speed up/savestate 2k3 games would make them much more palatable.
That would be like a gift from god due to the awful speed of the 2k3 DBS.

I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

Eventually every program will become incompative with modern OSes as OSes continue to evolve. Backwards compatibility isn't anywhere near as high a priority in the current OS development environment as it was five or ten years ago, and interest in maintaining it in future systems will probably continue to shrink. In fact, the Windows development team would love nothing more than to totally phase out .exe files and make them nonfunctional on the next generation of computers, so that every single piece of software must go through the Windows Store. If you can make a program without paying a developer's fee to Microsoft and without giving them 20% of your sales, they are losing money. If they allow old programs to continue to function, then developers don't have to make new programs and users don't have to buy new programs, and so they are losing even more money. Within five years I will be surprised if the average user knows how to download and run a non-windows-store program in Windows 9 - the desktop will be treated like DOS is treated now.
I've done a lot of custom stuff, but it's all in low-res RM2k3 format. If I were to have to start over in Ace, would it be possible to reformat these graphics and still use them? Are low res graphics usable at all in Ace?

Yeah, you can always intentionally use worse graphics
RPG Maker 95 still works on current operating systems. I think we may have awhile yet before 2k/2k3 require DOSBox (WINBox?) to run.
But yeah, there's really no practical reason to start something new with 2k/2k3.

2k/2k3 are indeed limited compared to xp/vx/ace, but it's still fun to me at least tinkering around with them. Sure they're both obselete, though nostalgia factor gone wild.
(If Vx Ace/Unity are the powerhouse engines now..what will make both of those obselete in the future?) o_o

Unless Enterbrain goes out of business, they'll keep making fancier RPG Makers. I also think that other free engines, such as GameMaker and Unity3D, will increase in popularity as they become easier to use.
Things I'd love to see in the next RM*:
- A new set of sound effects in the RTP
- The ability to set our own custom variables within actors/equips/enemies/etc.
- Inherent support for more frames in character animations
There are no 2k/2k3 games in the New/Notable, Latest Downloads, or Buzzing Games sections! Is this the end of an era?

Your sights are not set high enough, Craze. Here are the things that would actually convince me to upgrade from RMXP:
...It wouldn't necessarily have to be all of those things, but it would have to be, like, at least three of them, I think. If they keep going at the rate they've been going with VX and VX Ace, it won't matter if no one can use their software any more. No one will want to anyway.
- Support for 3D sprites on 2D backgrounds, PSX FF style (3D backgrounds would be too much)
- Ability to create isometric 2D maps with height, so we can create platforming, better puzzles, and tactical battles
- A simple in-engine interface to create 3D models, similar to how the spell animation interface works now
- Multiple core battle systems, including ATB, CTB, turn-based, action RPG, and tactical RPG
- Mouse support, not just for menus, but for movement and combat, so we can make control schemes like Diablo or Neverwinter Nights

I hate all of those ideas except mouse support, which I probably wouldn't use anyway. They're not what RM* is for or about. =X
PSX FF style? I remember that style. We don't need to go back to that. We really don't need back to that.

You hate the idea of giving game designers more options because you prefer to force everyone to do things a specific old-fashioned way? Go away and give the keyboard back to Craze, you 2K3-loving imposter.
I hate the idea of having to go back to that God awful ugly style. I can't understand why anyone in their right mind would want that option.
- General mouse support would be awesome
- An optional built-in sideview battle system (for ease of use!)
- Self-variables for events (in addition to more self-switches!)
- Variables that can hold strings
probably other things, but this is what first comes to mind
Learning some basic scripting really isn't too terrible, you know :P Then you could script VX or use a more advanced engine.
EDIT: Although I understand that it is a lot more time than some people have...
The biggest thing that frustrated me about new RPG Makers is that they remove as many features as they add with each take. Like the side-view battle system!

It is foolish to dismiss rm2k3 as obsolete trash. There is utility yet in its obsolescence. If we have a mindset to always forget the past and be brutally progressive, we're missing half the picture. There is merit in history. Similarly, you could categorize pixel art as obsolete, but that doesn't mean that new games in 2D using it can't have stunning graphics.
Rm2k3 is one of the most accessible gateways into the idea of game design and story telling. Letting amateurs put ideas to the test and learn from them. Otherwise, it gives perspective when juxtaposed against newer engines. Those engines didn't come from nothing, there's a lineage there that is worth tracing the ideas through.
Posting wish lists is fruitless, because with a 'real engine' you could implement all of said features.

author=LockeZWhile it may not have the best design, I do miss the pre-rendered maps of olde.

author=slashphoenixLol, like from XP to VX..the 5 tileset limit was a pain unless you parallax. No terrain tags, and loss of the 3 layers as well.
