WAS ANYONE ELSE HERE DISAPPOINTED WITH FF 6?
Posts
author=kentonaI think your being an ass for the hell of it and I don't appreciate this kind of comment.
I think you are just being adversarial for the fun of it. And Earthbound was boring.
author=SaileriusFinally now I know I'm not alone lol.
Yes. After how much it was hyped up to be the best RPG ever, I was expecting something... well, better than most games on RMN. The encounter rate is through the roof, most battles can be won by mashing attack, and 90% of the time you spend playing the game is wandering around pointlessly trying to figure out what pixel you need to interact with.
The characters are mostly irrelevant and forgettable, the much-lauded Kefka is just The Joker but Japanese... I don't even know where to start. Everything about the game is generic, half-baked, and boring. There's nothing wrong with it except there's nothing good about it, either. It's just a generic RPG that checks every box for the features you need to include in a SNES RPG.
There's no challenge, no fun, and no interesting story. It just goes through the motions.
author=PizzaThat's not a lot of variety in look especially say compared to say Earthbound. That's also a pretty unfair comparison, considering Earthbound has an entirely different setting, tone and plot to play around with. In the field of what it is, a lot of the towns in EB are the "exact same" too, just modern suburban areas instead of fantasy villages.
Go read this (and the entire series this guy wrote about FF if you haven't already) and you'll see why everybody remembers FF6 so fondly. It has a lot to do with the state of the series and RPGs in general when it was released, the switch between series directors and the way it changed FF for good.
Basically what I mean is that these articles are a really good analysis of FF as a whole, and how/why it evolved like it did over time.

It's been ages since I even played FF6, but I remember it being fun. 7 and 5 still beat it out for me though.
Earthbounds towns did way better to stand apart and were much more interesting. I don't think its unfair to compare them since FF 6 is held to higher standards.

Earthbound was boring
God bless opinions.
The only town from Earthbound that I remember is the one with zombies that get stuck to fly paper and the first town. Oh, and the resort town, but barely. I only remember there was one. Wait, wasn't there a town that was filled with weird... things? Dildo-type NPCs? Something like that. Oh, and there was a town that was inverted or something. I think. Not actually sure that they're all from the same Mother game, to be honest. >.<;
As for FF6 I remember Zozo, the tower of crazies, Miranda, the opera house and the town above with the auction house, Relm and Strago's home town, the destroyed town where you get Terra back, the Empire city, Doma, Figaro (who could forget a castle that travels under the sands?!) and Narshe.
It's kinda sad considering I've played Earthbound as much as I've played FF6. The only difference is I've never been able to stick all the way through Earthbound to finish it, while I have with FF6 (3-4 times. Actually, if I'm being honest, I've played Earthbound more because I keep meaning to complete it but never get around to it. >.<; )
Sure, there are some locations that do stick out in Earthbound, but I never really felt connected to them in any way. Not like with FF6, where the characters actually have a presence in the towns and areas they live in.

FF6 is just a generic RPG that checks every box for the features you need to include in a SNES RPG. But that it does them so incredibly well and greater than any other RPG makes it special. It also did some really cool things like not having a "main" hero, multi party dungeons, allowing everyone to learn magic, and just a suite of other really cool things with one of the best musical scores ever made for a videogame.
^Like Hero's Realm, then, in the aspect of ticking all the boxes but ticking them so well that it is a tier above most games of it's like. And I can say that because I'm LPing it yet again and have noticed a lot of great touches that really make it a very, very good game. I think if you ever remade it and sold it, you'd rake in quite a lot from the nostalgia fans out there.^

Yes. Now if you don't mind, I'll be going back to the good Final Fantasies.
The greatest challenge is forcing yourself to see it through to the end. Many, myself included, have fallen through that gap; some of us very early (shortly after starting).

author=kentonaThat doesn't mean you had to make a nasty comment about me because I disagree. I know Earthbound is NOT for everyone but it certainly had a better music track >.<

Also I think DQ 5 did these things better IMO. I like how DQ 5 gave us a more mature storyline that very much revolved around family which is unique of an RPG. Even though your main character is silent I felt more attached to the overall story.
I didn't make a mean comment about you. I made an observation about your apparent behaviour. And yeah, FF6 had a better music track - one of the best ever!
I never played DQ5. I don't think it was translated back then...

DQ5 is what got me into the DQ/W series, so I have to agree that it's quite good. I played it years after I'd played most of the better SNES jRPGs and it held up well, considering how old it was compared to the games I was playing at the time (I think FF8/9 and Suikoden III?), though it did have its issues.
If you asked my my favourite DQ game it would be a tie between 5/6/7 and 9. (Although I own 8 and enjoy it, I don't love it as much as I love other games. Mother 3 is pretty high up there in my most-liked games list, though it doesn't break the top 10. Neither does any of the DQ games, though they come close.) ^.^
I definitely do not agree about the music, though. The OST for FF6 is something you can listen to at any time and is one of the best game OSTs of all time. I can't really remember any of the Earthbound music even though I've played it as much, if not more than, FF6. (My top music OSTs in no order are FF6, Chrono Cross, Suikoden II, Terranigma and Chrono Trigger. Forgot to add Wild ARMs. That shit is wild.)
If you've never played Terranigma, I pity da fool.

I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

The DQ games with class systems have held up pretty well. The others.... I can't play Dragon Quest 3. I can already barely play FF4 and that's with my blinding, overwhelming nostalgia. I care way more about gameplay than I did in the 90s.
Because I spend all my time thinking about ways to improve RPGs, I can certainly think of things I'd improve if I were remaking FF6. But you will have a hard time convincing me any of them are major issues. Meanwhile it has a goddamn opera, your arguments are invalid.

I was just putting out my opinion wasn't meaning to say you guys were wrong. Obviously I'm the minority so there's no reason to be threatened by me. I'm not the kind of person though who let's nostalgia blind me so I hate it when people use that as a reason. That said as a huge music guy I can't even recall any tracks off of FF 6 while I'll never forget these.

Those beat any track in FF 6 and also if I recall FF 6 reused the same battle theme over and over while Earthbound presented a nice variety.
My favorite part of FF 6 though was the train. It needed more parts like that. After the ghost train it never reached that level of excitement again for me.

In DQ 5 you get married. I prefer that over an opera tbh.
Liberty how do I remove a post if I accidentally double post?
You can't remove posts.
This kind of topic is getting old. It's fine to seek shared tastes as long as discussions remain tactful and we don't nag.
No one should think of tastes in terms of validity or nostalgia blindness. That's a flawed mindset to be in and a sure way to never understand other people, what makes them who they are and what governs their tastes.
EDIT: Nostalgia can influence curiosity, but I've never heard anyone state that they like a game only because of nostalgia.

I played FF6 back in '95 or so and it blew my mind. It had super realistic graphics, good music, and you could pick monsters up and jump and slam them into the ground. The bad guys had cool giant death suits and their factory was cool as shit. When you got the airship it flew like Flammie and was fun just flying around in it going to random places. Totally awesome.
Mind I was nine or so at the time and it was way cooler than FF1 or FF2 and as cool as Secret of Mana. Later I played Mario RPG and SoE and Chrono Trigger and all those games were cool too. If I played FF6 for the first time now then yeah I wouldn't be as impressed. Sometimes I wonder how I died to X boss when I was a kid (but the real reason is because kids, or at least lil'me, are bad at video games)

I definitely like FF4, Dragon Ball Z, Power Rangers and Bubble Tape brand bubblegum only because of nostalgia. I'm sure there are other things I only like because of nostalgia. Most of the time, people aren't really capable of analyzing their own likes and dislikes enough to recognize when that's true though. It's easier to see in someone else than in yourself.
I don't know how you could be curious about something because of nostalgia. That's like an oxymoron. Nostalgia means you're already familiar with it.
I also think "taste" is a skill that you can be better or worse at. Not necessarily that some criteria for quality are better than others, but more that you can be better at the ability to truly see whether a given thing matches your own criteria, without being blinded by things like proximity or prejudgement. For example, being able to accurately judge your own work takes an incredible amount of skill at artistic taste. Part of what gets people to become good artists, good creators, is that they start out with good taste. And so when they see things that other people made, they can accurately tell what aspects of those things made them good. And more importantly, when they try to make something themselves, even though they're so emotionally close to it, they can see that it's not good, and they can see exactly why, and how to fix it. It doesn't meet their refined tastes, and so they keep working on it. Whereas someone with unrefined, complacent taste that lacks objectivity might make something mediocre and be proud of it, and thus never seek to improve themselves.
So yeah. My point was that if you think Dragon Quest 5 is a good game you have shitty taste. Dragon Quest 3 and 6 are okay though because of the class systems.

6 IS pretty typical of RPGs overall if you look back at it (though that can just as well depend on your tastes), but some of the shit it did back then (like Celes' suicide) was pretty shocking at the time for an RPG on a 16-bit console, I personally won't deny that. That, and like kentona said, it works with its storytelling and manages to have that charm to it even years later when what it has would become standards for the genre.

@Tago: You don't remove posts. I can though. Just be careful when posting. It's not hard to hit the edit button and not create a new post. The only time double-posts are given the pass is when you accidentally lag the site, because it's the sites fault. That said, it's easy not to cause double posts even when that happens - just don't hit back and resend. Instead, hit back and refresh the page. Your initial post is very likely to have gone through. (In case it hasn't, I recommend copying the post you were going to make before refreshing. It's not hard to do~)
This has been your double-post faq of the day.
The only memorable song from Earthbound was that cat one, imo. The rest just... kinda exist, I guess. And the game having more than one battle song is kinda a reason why they're not memorable. The Final Fantasy series does a good job having you hear a song enough times that it sticks in your memory. Add that they're very good songs from incredible composers and thus are basically ear-worms and you have a lot of tunes that stick in your mind easily.
...current music in my head is Lufia II's battle music. The boss one. So good. <3
I can't say much about that, GRS, since I got into CT and FF6 when I got the internet which was around, oh, '97 or so, which means I was about 14-15 years old at the time and had been playing jRPGs for a while before then. I think they still hold up today as long as you're not one of those people who think 3D graphics are the peak of gaming excellence. :/ Not that 3D isn't good, but when you try for realism your game starts to lose it's own style and thus tends to look like every other 3D game on the market, henceforth, losing its identity. I'm not big on 3D for the sake of 3D or games that market 3D hyper-realistic graphics as the big, main selling point. ://///

Again with that attitude.
Tago, don't poke the bear.
Also, you do come off as trolling a bit. The fact is that many, many people know FF6's music to be some of the best in the industry. It's a fact. Earthbound might have some cool tunes but it's not going to stand up to big name composers like Nobuo Uematsu, Shiro Sagisu and Tsuneyoshi Saito. Their work is, well, amazing.
To be fair, though, Keiichi Suzuki's work on Tokyo Godfathers and Uzumaki was pretty great, but he doesn't quite match up.
Personally I'm a huge fan of Yasunori Mitsuda's stuff. ~<3
