FF7 REMAKE. IT'S A THING.

To be fair, though, the Weapons were there for a reason that tied into the story~

But yeah, something like, say, Ozmo, which had no bearing on the story or was even talked about aside from some tiny hints here and there really had no reason to, well, be. Saying that, I put the fucker in the ground, but it was really, really weird that suddenly there was this big ol' floating marble for some reason. XD

At least give them a reason. Emerald and Ruby were part of the Planet's defences and unleashed when Sephiroth did the Thing. Laying them to rest was optional, but they at least tied into the story. (It would have been cool if there had been a bonus ending of a sorts if you defeated them, but hell, I felt accomplished as fuck apon beating them so I didn't mind too much~)

Super bosses... if they're fun I don't care where they are from. But, +points for attaching lore to them.

Given my Universe is so vast and all characters and games exist in the same span, it's easy to use lore-relevant super-bosses.

But, that's enough about me, I thought Osma would be way cooler looking but Lib's description of him as a marble is pretty much on the dot, big swiriling marble of abstract doomy death.

Like I imagined he would look similar to what Omega did from the Final Fantasy Anime.
If anyone cares, I made a general Final Fantasy topic here. I feel it would be a more suitable place for discussing FF things outside of remake speculations, new info and remembering things from FF7.

You see, yeah, they belong in the lore and I like that, but they don't act like they belong in the lore, which is a little weird (although understandable). If they're the planet's defence force and the weapons chose to squash all the Humans instead of deal with meteor, then it really doesn't make much sense that Emerald and Ruby Weapon are doping around in the middle of nowhere or chilling underneath a city without attacking it.

It would have been cool to do something where they were attacking some settlements that you could gain bonuses for saving before the end, like Wutai, Cosmo Canyon or some other place that becomes functionally useless after the Diamond Weapon attack. Then you could do some bonus ending scenes or something!

I can understand why they didn't bother going that heavy with sticking to the lore. But that's the kind of guy I am, after all.

The original version of Final Fantasy VII didn't have Emerald & Ruby WEAPON boss fights, they were added to the English version.
That's part of the reason they feel tacked on.

@Liberty
I'm a completionist, but some people just play games to get to the end and won't go out of their way to get optional stuff.
That doesn't mean they're playing it wrong or don't know how to play, they're just playing the game how they want to.
You mean like Diamond did? And got it's ass handed to it, then took to the skies to destroy airships? Or how Ruby took up in the desert and thus threatened the lives of those in the Gold Saucer, or how Emerald was killing submarines underwater?

They weren't to kill humans, they were to deal with the technology threat and Sephiroth. Since they couldn't get Sephiroth, and had been beaten back from Midgar, the centre of technological power, but weren't to kill humans (which were a part of the lifestream and the planet), they went after other technological targets instead.

I mean, Wutai, Nibelheim, Costa del Sol, Corel, Snow Village place, Bone Village, Rocket Town and the like were hardly technological hubs, so they wouldn't have bothered with them. Junon's gun went to Midgar, which they tried to attack, and Emerald did go underwater and swim around the area where the underwater reactor was, destroying what it found down there.

So... they were doing their jobs~

I'm looking forward to seeing Shinra's DEATHRAY in the HD remaster.

Also, this is squaresoft so expect a bunch of remixed music.
As much as I'm waiting for this (who isn't?) I'm not sure I will play it.

Ever heard of nostalgia goggles? I have a beutiful memories with Final Fantasy 7 and I don't want them to be replaced with something different. It's like when you feel a scent of something you haven't felt in years and suddenly so many memories and emotions come back to you. I don't want to lose that.

Anyway, I got my fingers crossed and I do believe this will be a great game!

Played it recently on Steam and it holds up, not graphically, no. But it's a pretty darn good RPG, though I will say the music carries it a lot during the more boring parts.
I have zero faith in Square Enix. The guy in charge of the FF games right now has no idea what makes Final Fantasy games "Final Fantasy". It's like if the worst of the rpgmaking community won the lottery and found themselves directing rpgs for the biggest RPG name known. He is making games for and about himself.

No personality, no heart...everything is about being pretty and empty. FF7 came out over 20 years ago and people STILL try to use Cloud/Sephiroth for their internet screennames. The FF games have gone from players caring too much when a character dies(FF7) to players actively wishing for the main party to be murdered violently(FF13).

I don't even want to think about what this guy will do to FF7...
So anyone else think Final Fantasy VII remake will come to NX? It seems likely now that Cloud is in Smash. Plus we all know a Dragon Quest is in the works for Wii U as well.

I had these same feelings. I enjoyed Nomura as an adolescent (lol..), but his storytelling approach is pretty sophomoric.

Hopefully they can leave the game's script generally as-is, hire some quality actors, and emphasize the appeal of updated aesthetics, where SE undeniably shines. The original game squeezed such artistry into low-res backdrops and jagged pixel characters, that it'd be an absolute disgrace if they can't conjure up the same magic with today's technology.

But yeah, trying to remain optimistic. XD

...so Toriyama's not directing? Hmm...if he's totally out of the picture then I may be able to get on board with this.
Like I said, there's going to be differences, of course. I'm gonna view it as an interesting new take on the game and enjoy the similarities. I'm also going to see what I can enjoy of the new stuff - there's bound to be things that are done better than in the original version.

Publisher(s) Square Enix
Director(s) Tetsuya Nomura
Producer(s) Yoshinori Kitase
Writer(s) Kazushige Nojima

Part of me does wish Sakaguchi was still involved, simply because he was responsible for so much of the overall tone, the "theme of life" that defined Final Fantasy VII.

Toriyama is thankfully absent, but Nomura doesn't have too many directing credentials either.. (outside of Advent Children or Kingdom Hearts). So, I'm still a bit on the fence.

It could all just be rose-tinted nostalgia talking, of course. XD

Gameplay trailer, way earlier than expected. Action battle system as you'd expect, but damn, it looks pretty nice thus far. I'm down for some action battles.

Apparently Barret is Lawrence Fisburne now, too.
Wow, so they did port over FF15's battle engine~ I'm a bit mixed on that decision. But at least it'll cut development time significantly. Hopefully they can tweak things just enough to keep some elements of the original.

Visuals and production values look astonishing though. O__0 (wtf is with Wedge's whiny voice? XD)
I honestly really like Wedge's voice -- it's cute, and it fits the fact that he's basically a big naive idealistic softie putting as much of a positive spin on the whole 'belongs to an environmental terrorist group' thing as he can

I really like this style of Barrett, too -- they could have easily gone for the exaggerated Mr. T thing, but Barrett's always been one of my favourite characters for his sense of responsibility and his kind heart. making him a little more stern and serious should help get that across better.

another thing I've noticed is that they're definitely making this Cloud a bit scrawny and young-looking. this is a good sign, in my opinion -- it means they might be going for the 'actually a huge dork putting on airs' thing, rather than the Scowly Coolguy characterization they've been resting on since Advent Children.
i am depressed
i hope they release a story mode with no battles
I'm honestly excited to see how it plays out -- I mean, a lot of people were hoping for a return to something more ATB-style, but as I see it I can always just play the original FF7 for that.

though that said, seeing that kind of battle system with the graphical and UI improvements they've made in the intervening years would be really interesting.
