I'm excited, don't care if I have to wait to attack or use Materia. So excite I want to puke. However, my fingernails haven't been inserted into my chattering teeth yet. We've only been shown a brief glimpse. It won't be until we see if the Planet is explorable, or just filled with Crisis Core hotspots. So, I'll tentatively wait for further news. Can't be excited without knowing what to be excited about. The battle system is whatever. The original game was so damn easy you could hold X for majority of the game, so a change is definitely fine. I have no misconceived memories. Replayed this recently on PSP thanks to PSN Classics.

Big questions I have, are, will it be FFXV fields? Will Cait Sith be atop Toyasaurus, how will Red XIII handle, will there be a jump button? (Last is unlikely, sadly!)

Edit: Thanks Libby! Episodic, eh? Hmm... Probably fine. I mean, it's a BIG risk SE can't afford to take with their money, so making us pay for episodes over time is cool. Sure hope it doesn't cause the world to be segmented, or timeskips to happen... It would be pretty nice to have it all re-released as a single game disc. Hopeful thinking.

it means you won't have a world map

sounds stupid to break it up if you ask me, i'm sure each release will be $30-50 ;V
The didn't say anything about there not being a world map, so it's still likely. I mean, the airship did play a decent part of the plot and, yes, they said they're altering parts of the plot to keep it fresh and surprise people - not just making it a nostalgia kick - but that don't mean they won't keep the Highwind and let you control it (please not like ffx, please not like ffx).

Price costs might be like Life is Strange - about $10 each. Maybe $20 with three parts - that's $60, which would be the full price of a full game anyway. I can deal with that.

I wonder if there were bits they had to cut from the original idea that they want to add in this time around.

Also, from the looks of it, there might be some environmental Tomb Raider-ish shit so I'm happy for that! At least it's shown Cloud crawling through gaps and under rocks. That could be cool. Also, the fact that you only see one person on the map most likely means that it's the tried and true 'all in the one person' routine of the original. Which I'm all for, frankly. Barret and Cloud are both shown in the battle scene, though, so it's very likely to be this.

I actually liked what I saw of the trailer.

I have no problem with the battle system. It reminds me of Zestiria -- seamless on-map encounters where your party jumps out of your pocket (runs in from off-screen). In fact, the game actually looks pretty okay and I like the visuals...

...but I'm hoping they don't get too obsessed with the visuals. It's S-E's big snag. Honestly, I would have ADORED a new pre-rendered game, but I guess they only do that for portable devices now. Basically, I worry that it sounds like the split is ONLY because of wanting to pour way too much money into the environments so that fans aren't disappointed... but honestly, fans are gonna be up in arms over random stuff anyway so I'm not sure why they don't just make the game at a reasonable rate.

ffxiv is their big cash cow at the moment, and even a non-graphics-snob like me is a little =| at some of those textures and recycled animations (although a lot of the models are great). if they can sell a game that's stuck in the PS3 era to become one of the top 2 or 3 MMOs outside of Korea, I think they can get away with only 80-90% of the graphical power they have going on in those trailers.

tl;dr: don't bankrupt yourself, s-e. or do, it's not my problem, but =/

edit: this also ties into FFXV. they've spent a decade working on a game and yeah, it's super-pretty, but a decade holy shit

"How about... artificially splitting the game into Episode 1 and Episode 2?"

I expect Hero's Realm II Jr. to be at least 5 different episodes.

Nomura: “If we dedicated our time to a single release, parts of it would become summarized. We’d have to cut some parts, and additional parts would come in few, so rather than remake the game as a full volume, we decided to do multiple parts.”

I'm interested. It seems they're going for a high density experience that they have to split up to keep the entire game intact and faithful to the original. All I'm concerned about are the; 1. Space between the episodes and 2. Saves and gameplay being seamless between the episodes and 3. The episodes 'feeling' like they add up to the entire game, instead of completely different experiences.
this really depends on how large each chapter is and how much they cost. we don't have any information on pricing yet, but if they're really planning to deepen the amount of content then I have no problems with it.

this is probably a decision informed by FF15's long and costly development -- they're learning how long it takes to make a game at a certain level of depth and visual quality, and the adoption of an episodic model seems like an obvious way to bridge people's expectations of quality with the development time it would require. it'll also allow them to fund future development with the proceeds from earlier parts, which is an attractive prospect for a company which is already spending a massive budget on a single large title which has yet to hit market. the only immediately-obvious drawback is that players won't be able to power through the entire game right on release, and while I hate hitting a 'to be continued' screen this really does seem like what's best for the project.

I kind of hope they do modern mockups of the 'INSERT DISC' screens for the bits between episodes. that'd be really cute.
by the time I get around to it, all 7 episodes of FFVII Remake will be out, anyway

This is an interesting way to look at it. Of course it all boils down to how they apply it, but I never looked at it that way before.
I'm making a lot of guesses about S-E's financial state and the goals of the developers, of course! games are expensive, though. if episodic approaches become a way to mitigate the huge investments that top-end AAA games require right now, then I think I'm all for it as long as the business practices stay fair. as things are, I worry about the massive costs + need for massive returns making large devs more and more risk-averse.
Do you mind if I quote your previous observations (anon, if you wish, of course) elsewhere and to friends in my own discussions? I think they're really insightful.
I don't mind at all! they are just speculation, though -- I don't have any sources to back up what I've said.

i hate playing/watching episodic content until it's complete, but I have no problem with it existing. i wouldn't be buying it until a "game of the boner 2018" complete pack for 50% off, as such. i think it's gonna be really weird for a AAA jrpg, though, and like mawk has said I hope it doesn't lead to SuperShitty practices.
Can't wait to see Aeris' funeral in glorious UHD when FF7 part 3 comes out on the PS5 in 2022
can you imagine the new wave of 'how to revive Aeris' hoaxes? these are exciting times.

yeah it'll cost $10

edit: for $12 you can get a white or black dress aeris that plays J-E-N-O-V-A when you ride it. er wait
no that's the General Leo costume DLC

(one of my pipe dreams for this project: vanity costumes so I can be Dress Cloud for the whole game)
I'm hoping the DLC is a giant horrible grinding meandering sidequest on par with the nonsense of the various hoaxes and at the end Aeris is still dead but then Reeve drives in MechaAeris that he made and also pilots and she gets a missile punch limit break

I would buy that dlc
DLC is the Weapon Battles. XD
