FF7 REMAKE. IT'S A THING.
Posts
As excited as i am to actually have a game for the ps4 to play, im still so leery about the ff7 remake. Although that might stem from my distaste for Nomura's design sense. It makes sense to change the battle system- the old final fantasy entirely menu based combat really isnt the most engaging way of presenting fights.
I hope the plot isnt changed in huge ways. the plot's the biggest part of an rpg, and i dont think they can really call it ff7 if they diverge too much from the old version.
Also why does sony announce games so freaking soon? it doesnt seem like the smart thing to do, primarily because squenix has a bad habit of not entirely delivering on things in a timely manner and after enough time hype sours.
Ah well. for all my complaints im still going to buy it when it comes out in 2050

What merits?
The sequels had strong aesthetics and world-building. The universe itself was immeasurably fleshed-out. There were some one-off memorable characters, like Grievous and Darth Maul.
In the originals, the Jedi were no more than enigmatic caretakers who spiritually in-tune with the Force. We had no idea what their duties were comprised of, or what their relationship to the galaxy at large was. And we literally had no idea of who the Sith were - they're never even named in the original trilogy.
We also see that neither order is completely monolithic; there are disagreements and opposing viewpoints within both organizations. Qui-Gon Jinn has a pretty strong independent streak that clashes with the Jedi Order's more conventional way of doing things and which causes him to do such things as pull a young boy out of slavery on a world outside the Republic's jurisdiction.
By today's standards, the CGI is muddled and phony, but it was striking at the time. Naboo and Coruscant feel like real places, which was a pretty impressive feat by ILM in 1999.
(Anyway yeah, they're quite bad as films. xD)
I think you're missing the point, Darken, but I appreciate your eagerness to evaluate the remake with an objective eye. Because our minds are inextricably linked to the nostalgia of the original, I just don't quite think that's possible.
The more you explain something the more boring it becomes. I didn't need to know that the force was some scientific non magical thing, and that everything can be explained in DBZ terms. You need a little bit of mystery and wonder in anything. Do you really need to know which species of alien was in the Mos Eisley bar? Complimentary details don't really stand on their own. Memorable one off characters sounds like an oxymoron, even I can admit Boba Fett's popularity was kind of stupid.
The jedis in the prequels were really inconsistent in what they were tasked to do. Qui gon would do immoral and moral things seemingly at random and I had no idea why he did anything other than destiny aka the script told him to do. Every jedi character had the same moral ambiguity The jedi overall were portrayed as really confusing, are they police? monks? military? detectives? body guards? politicians? tactical advisors? The world could not really commit to any ideas despite elaborating on them anyway.
Naboo and Coruscant are great for postcards maybe. It seemed like the pacing of the movie was eager to get away from each setting prematurely without actually doing anything in them. On naboo you just had like a windows xp wallpaper field where each faction were lined up perfectly. You could swap out any background with anything and not know the difference. The only scene i can think of that interacted with the world was maybe the submarine thing but even then that scene had no significance to the movie (neither did the pod race...).
No I'm just pessimistically opinionated. Having said that you just don't know how nostalgia works and the article posted a pretty bad example. With this article I could defend any bad movie remake with "ur just nostalgic for 80s movies bro grow up" just as it's also fallacious to claim that something is good just because it's new.

I don't know how/why people thought I was nuts for saying this is what they were going to do.

I've been pessimistic about this project since it was announced and for a pretty valid reason. The visionaries of FF7 aren't the ones making it, but rather the guys who have been helming all of the shitty new games in the series. Bet this will only be the tip of the iceberg.
Then don't play it! Problem solved.
I want to see it in action before I make any judgements. It seemed pretty obvious that there would be some sort of action battle system in place, but we still don't know the exact details of how it will work other than "it will look extremely flashy" (which is par for the course in modern JRPGs anyways). Should be interesting.

also
just no
although there's nothing new in there. advent children's not a game. it's a movie. and they're just saying it's their aesthetic reference. I'm cool with that.

Agreed. Like I said- I want to see it in action before I make any judgement calls about it.

Nomura's statement is vague enough it's not really anything to 'call'. Nothing concrete about the game is known except for general sentiment on the developers. You mean to tell me that they're using Advent Children's visuals as inspiration for the remake's visuals? Something we've already seen from the initial trailer? wow no shit guyz

Also this. ^
Just keep in mind that what we were shown of FFXIII before it actually came out differed a bit from what we actually got, so we never will know for sure how it plays until it's actually released. So even if you don't like what they end up showing, that's not to say that that will be the end product.
I can also get behind the aesthetic of Advent Children.

LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

I am one thousand percent confident they will be turning the FF7 remake into an isometric tactical RPG where you collect and breed 150 different varieties of Red XIIIs from around the world to battle enemies with

No problem, I don't have a PS4. ;)

Going back and playing a little more FF7 on the PC last night, I say as long as they fix the godawful camera/character/monster selection setup in battles to be a little more clear who you're targeting, it'll probably be fine for the diehard fans.
I say this because I got downright destroyed fighting a Dragon (wow, not even a catchy adjective) in Mt. Nibel because Cloud used an ether on himself instead of Aeris while Aeris cast Life on herself instead of Barret. It would've been a slow battle, but I'm confident that if I knew who the hell I was targeting (I don't think the camera could have been any lower or given me a more profile view of my characters, I swear to God), I would've survived.

On the PSX version, if you press select during battle, it shows a text list of who you're targeting. On the PC version you press the - key to do the same thing. I agree the non-text version is confusing.
That's not something they'll need to fix in the remake though because, even if by some christmas miracle the game still uses an RPG battle system, that targeting system relies on the enemies standing in a straight line and not moving. Which is not happening.

author=CorfaisusAeris dying wasn't really a big meaningful thing to me.
Next time, they should bring some gameplay with them, because Aeris dying will never mean the same thing ever again.
You know what is? Combat that isn't like FF13's.
Be careful whatchu wish fer mate.
FF13s combat is great, though. It has a few issues but it's fun and fast and on the fly. I mean, it wasn't exactly what was promised for the game, but it's pretty decent. If only the game had less of a corridor feel to break it up a little - that's my main complaint. That the whole game is just battles and thus over-saturated with them. Some towns and sidequests (that don't require hunting more monsters) would have really helped it shine .
It's automated and fucking hand-holding shallow bullshit is what it is.
Like there's the Witcher which goes insane with complexity, this is the other end of the scale where combat would like to involve the player as little as possible.
FF14's combat, I could dig that.
I half expect it's not gonna be a turn-based RPG at this rate, Squaresoft have shown a real talent for the hack n' slash style, Kingdom Hearts and FF: Dissidia just for good examples.
They could still easily do enemy encounters like in the original, or they could do the Skyforge thing, which is have 'packs' of monsters that you can avoid or fight.
Though I won't complain if they make the combat like in Crisis Core, fuck that was a good RPG combat system.
Yes, that same guy who was responsible for Final Fantasy VII.
Also if combat is anything like it was in Advent Children, fuck yes!
THE BATTLE SCENES ARE THE BEST PART OF THAT MOVIE!
You're really grasping at straws, but fine by me! To be honest I'm not gonna be buying anything until I've been given evidence it'll be good. Remakes are especially guilty devils, and ones I no longer trust.
Just look at that recent 2003 fiasco.
Also Wadda's been delisted as the CEO of Squaresoft, and he was the largest cancer to the recent Squaresoft things.
Nomura actually said if he touches another fucking game he's directing he's leaving the company and taking an enormous chunk of it with him.

You can turn off the auto-complete and choose each ability yourself - which is what I do.
Since it's so fast-paced you need short-cuts instead of running through menus apon menus. They removed the normal attack feature and made it so that you have to bounce between preset classes and choosing the skills of those classes. Granted, it's not the best battle system of the series, but it's still pretty good.
