What are you so smug about? Whose going to buy your games when wages go down and the cost of the necessities of life go up?

It's not smugness, it's a genuine observation of how liberals alienated themselves from the rest of society. And it remains to be seen if the economy goes in that direction. I'm not worried about my games selling. I care about the nation and the world.

Gonna say it now: please stop throwing around the term SJW.

I got no issues with you choosing to vote how you want, that's your prerogative and you're gonna have to live the with the good and bad of your choices which is fair enough, but using that term as an insult for anyone who actually cares about stuff that you don't and want to protect parts of society that you don't is beyond annoying.

At this point in time it's nothing more than a catch-all insult - pretty much flame baiting, so please cease using it. Thanks.

While the term 'SJW' is getting pretty weary, and the fight for equality is always inherently just, I am also going to go ahead and say that some of the identity politics of the left (and therefore to a degree the Democratic party) has been hurtful to the cause, if nothing else other than optics. This election shows it definitely came to a head. I firmly believe there is such a thing as 'regressive left'.

Shit like college protests where they blocked passage so that none of the white students could get to class, the Mizzou nonsense (well, what it amounted to) other misc shit like calling yoga classes problematic and people getting crazed over dreadlocks and such is/was getting to the point where it was regressive and missing the forest for the trees. I'm not even white and it really seemed like they were taking the white guilt thing overboard.

My favorite is when, considering black subjects/social situations/etc a bunch of 'conscious' white people tell me how to feel as a black man and what I should and shouldn't be offended by. This attitude was especially evident during the height of Bernie Sanders campaign. "WHY DON'T YOU BLACK PEOPLE VOTE FOR BERNIE SANDERS!? DON'T YOU KNOW WHAT'S GOOD FOR YOU????" Fuck off, man.

I'm hard liberal, to give this context.

Multiple African American friends up here have said the same thing. It's refreshing to see other people notice they're being TOLD what to think. Not much hurts more than being told to do something or being accused of something because of something you can't change.

Giving the world Donald Trump because you're annoyed about dumb college kids is like seeing a spider in your bathtub and burning your house down.

It's intellectually dishonest to simplify it down to just this. I didn't vote for the man, either!

Well, if this is the case, and if Donald Trump will "burn the house down" then I guess technically that would be right. What I'm trying to say is that the S... I mean.... professional victims are what angered just enough people to put Trump over the top. I personally base things on policy and ideology.

I'm not saying it's that simple either; it's a multitude of factors that led us to this point. Pointing the blame entirely on that aspect would be fallacious, but among other things, the Democratic party does need to do some self examination and an autopsy to set things right next go around.

I thought that was the British, but we aren't in any position to #MakeAmericaGreatBritainAgain :(

While much of the War of 1812 involved an effective territory war with Canada (then still largely under British rule), no one from Canada had anything to do with the sacking of Washington. The troops who did this came from across the sea after Britain settled one of its wars in Europe.

A storm hit Washington the next day and caused so much damage to British ships it effectively forced them out, so it was a wash in the end.

my father voted for trump because a) not hillary clinton "crooked" b) his apparent anti-muslim position c) anti-immigrant position d) "drain the swamp"

many of the people that i know of that either voted or sympathized with trump did so for similar reasons. though not always directly stated... it can be summed up to the return of a "golden age" for america that not-so-vaguely resembles the conditions of the 1950s

whoever's claim that its usually a one-issue thing isnt really correct... for some sure, but if i agreed with trumps stance on say... transgender bathroom rights, which anything lgbt related i am very high prioritizing, (he most recently he said they should be able to use the restroom of their choice), i would not choose his side due to his every other position being awful.

trump is a candidate of the not only the working class whites who have been frustrated for ages at their own plight and have since heavily invested in institutionalized prejudice as a (n ineffective) means of solving their problems, but of also whites of every social class for preserving white status quo... (not that clinton would change that at all)

the first election i was able to vote for, and it was disappointing to see a choice between clinton and trump... but even worse is that i have a government over me stuffed to the brim with people that think my existence is worthy of conversion and torture :(

i found sanders and his ""democratic socialism"" (which isnt even socialism at all...) to be the most appealing of any candidate... a shame that he wasn't in it for the long haul
how did this post twice? sorry everyone I am new

I believe there is a regressive left as well, but it's a tiny echo chamber which in no way represents the greater pursuit of equity and actual social justice that most of people who identify as left-wingers strive for.

I spend a lot of time online, and the areas where the crazy-fringe-tumblr-sjw exist are small and easily avoidable, whereas the territory their opposites on the right control is far greater. Go to literally any video on youtube where the person within the video mentions anything to do with feminism or social justice and you will see a HUGE backlash, both in "dislikes" and also vitriolic comments. At first I thought it was just trolls, but after awhile I realized that the problem is incredibly wide-spread. I've seen obscure videos with 118 views with two comments about how feminism is stupid. Pretty much every video with a female comedian (no matter how low the viewcount) has a comment saying "x female comedian isn't funny", regardless of how funny she is and regardless of how many less funny male comedians there are. You might scoff and say "that's just youtube lol" but a lot of those commenters are voting-age US citizens, and eventually you realize that the problem can only get so widespread when it has the real-life, offline numbers to back it up.

Also lol@ harmonic using "liberals" as a catch-all term for everyone he doesn't like. What a fucking guy.

Absolutely, but the issue isn't just tangible effects, it's optics as well, and if people perceive it to be a bigger problem than it is, then it weaves itself into the social conversation as well. The rare occurrence of shit like "yoga is cancelled because it's cultural appropriation" and "Middle class white woman goes into frothy righteous rage over the plight of minority she's never actually encountered" may be rare but it does end up dominating the conversation. I've had to tell people to chill on my behalf more than once, and it's only lately where the more reasonable left started telling the overzealous left to shut the fuck up.

But even then though, it's even more complex than that. A big thing that happened this election was that Trump managed to speak to the poor working class whites, which the Democratic Party and the left failed to do effectively. I grew up in the Rust Belt (where the decline, sometimes into poverty, of the blue collar worker is very real), and while I don't live there anymore, lately poor white people have been getting implicitly told (sometimes quite literally) that their problems don't matter because "Hey, at least you're still white!" That's not right.

Lastly, I live in Seattle, where the phenomenon of the 'comfortable, but somehow still 'ultra oppressed' middle class social justice conscious white hipster' thing is real as fucking shit, and they all have social media and blogs. Some people in Portland are even worse. People like that really make the left look bad.

That's not how I'm using it. That might be how YOU use it (terms flipped), but don't put words in my mouth. I'm referring to liberals specifically.

But this is RMN and I'm Harmonic and that means I'm automatically going to be dogpiled no matter what, so I get it. I'll see your personal grudge and raise you anti-Trump protestors are saying "RAPE MELANIA" and "ASSASSINATE TRUMP". I wasn't going to even bring it up, but Kaempfer decided to take this pretty civil discussion and drag it into hateful territory again.

If I'm supposed to like people that call for raping Melania Trump, then we can't find common ground.
I like how he's draining the swamp and then appointing the slimiest things crawling around on the bottom to his cabinet
