I am trying to power through the last book of The Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan. Knife of Dreams or somesuch.
It is going very slowly.
I tried reading The Wheel of Time books, but I couldn't get past the second one. They weren't bad... just kind of slow? I don't remember much, it was some years ago.

Now I haven't read The Wheel Of Time but in general, one thing that I learned in writing school is that yes, writing that the average, educated reader finds "slow" or "hard to get through" more often than not really is bad. This is part of why (you may attempt to lynch me now) J.R.R. Tolkien is not actually a very good writer, in terms of technique and craft.
I've been on an Africa binge recently. Just finished Heart of Darkness, currently reading Sundiata, next up is The Poisonwood Bible.

Then his son must be a GODLY editor, because The Silmarillion is one of the best literary treasures I've ever had the honor of partaking in!
author=Max McGee link=topic=2557.msg47431#msg47431 date=1227810545Very true. You have to trudge through 90% of the chaff in his books to get to that 10% of golden, exciting, riveting writing. In all of the books (except 10, which is a complete stinker) there is always one or two really good moments.I tried reading The Wheel of Time books, but I couldn't get past the second one. Plus, I need closure.

I couldn't even get through the first book in the series. It could be what Max is saying, that it's badly written, or it could be that its length is just so daunting as to force people to psych themselves out.
I have a tough time getting through Gone With the Wind, but that's still a good book (imho). The same with a lot of classics.

They don't let us read books in my classes. Only plays and screenplays :'(. Though the original script for Apocalypse, Now! is quite interesting...
Uhh... what?
I just meant that I don't have the time for anything that isn't classwork, lol.
I recently (About a month or two ago) finished "Day of the Triffids".
Not exactly what I was expecting (having not seen the film) but a real page turner. The only book that kept my attention in a long time, I'm not much of a book reader, but anything sci-fi and I'm there!
Seriously, go read it! If you have what did you think?

Currently torn between The Savage Detectives and 2666 by Roberto Bolano. Both are really, really odd.

What she? Both J.R.R. and Christopher Tolkien are male.

that was a typo. I meant he.
Anyway, i guess manga would count as reading. I'm currently reading the death note series.

Yes. That counts.
I'm currently "reading" the death note series.
No, that doesn't count. :P

Isaac Asimov's "Foundation" serie.
Now I want to re-read Fantastic Voyage II. Maybe after Speaker for the Dead....

The death note series is one of the best. Easily kills all these other books. :P
Cannery Row by John Steinbeck. I was expecting this to be really happy-go-lucky, but twenty pages in and two people have already killed themselves. Now that I think about it, I don't remember reading a Steinbeck novel where at least one character hasn't killed themselves.
