I say nix the Ranger class.

Replace him with the Freelancer:

The Freelancer is very versatile, but doesn't have any particular strengths. He also would have the option to advance to any class.
Good call. I'm replacing Ranger with Freelancer, and naming its ability set "ESSENTIAL".

If you're curious, I basically pretended that each ability set had the literal word "magic" on the end and tried to name them to fit that as best as possible. (i.e: NATURAL magic, ARCANA magic, ESSENTIAL magic, LEARNED magic, ROULETTE magic, ANTI magic, etc.)

I noticed that the Bard is very ambiguous. Even though it uses something resembling magic, it doesn't use MP and its equipment class is physical. If we do decide to merge Tamer and Poacher we can move Bard to rogue and we'll finally have an equal number of physical and magic classes, assuming Psychic and Magitank are both accepted (though still not an equal number of rogue classes)
The Bard is a rogue in my books. His skills are kind of like the Artificier's in a way - no MP cost, but lower guarantee to hit.
Then it's settled - Poacher and Tamer have been merged, and recategorized Bard as a rogue.

Lastly, will we be using the Psychic and Magitank classes? Also should there be 2 rogue Elite classes?
I hate to keep borrowing from my earlier games, but the Daredevil class was an elite rogue class that was absolutely lethal in battle - arguably the best class in the game.

I would say make Knight into an advanced class. Squires come before Knights.

About the SPEED issue:

Set, constant speed. It does not grow with levels and is entirely based on class.



MONSTERS:

Why not enemy parties of the same classes available to the player? Outlaws, bandits, enemy soldiers, A tussle in the marketplace. After all, if the heroes can have classes, why can't the villains?

Okay, I'm just about ready to start work on the project - specifically the database.

Now, I've converted a bunch of DQ charsets into battlechars, with the anticipation of having battles look something like this:

HOWEVER, I am still open to other ideas or formats. In particular, I think it'd be neat to have simple battle backgrounds like earlier FFs (where it is mostly black BUT at the top there would be a simple treeline, or field, or mountains, etc...

I do not have those resources.

We need to consider what monster graphics we want to use. I do have a lot of DQ monsters, but they were designed for a front view system.

I'll be using them as place holders for now until we either agree to use them, or someone suggests something else.

As for battlers, thinking of going for something like this.

Basically FF4/5 characters NES-fied


This would be pretty easy to convert since all it takes is mass color filling existing battlers from an NES pallete. As for monsters, we could just snag the ff1 and ff2 ones. Or perhaps ones from Castlevania, Zelda II, and other side-scrollers with evil looking dudes.

I say we use pallete swaps of the heroes' classes, the way FFTA did it. Red swaps for blue, green swaps for purple or something like that.

Also, maybe a front view battle system like FFMQ, but with taller BattleChars?

Answering the complaints about Rm2k3's slow DBS on the last page, in theory I might be able to create a 'patch' that changes how the DBS calculates the speed. I say in theory because I've only made changes to various parts of Rm2k, nothing to Rm2k3. Then again, Rm2k3 uses most of Rm2k's code for the base so...

Edit: Come to think of it, I could apply it most Rm2k3 games I've thought of playing. That would make more worthwhile.

They are practically the same class in many ways. Personally, I liked Agent class, and I don't mind the Charmer.

I'd go with Daredevil and Agent so far.
