A MONTAGE OF THOUGHTS ABOUT SEVERAL GAMES
Posts
I like the game, but until I discover a method to get the Reru (?) powers more easily, I'll stick to something else. I liked that you got powers from most monsters, but Didn't you have to almost kill them and then do something to get their magic? or did you just have to kill that particular one a lot to get it? either way, it was hard.
and I agree, it was hard to like the other characters. The muscle guy was the most forgettable.

No, you just had to kill that monster, and you'll randomly get their power (note that this isn't ALL monsters, but just Seru type monsters). If you approach it with a GOTTA CATCH 'EM ALL mentality to it with a fanatical need to get EVERY MONSTER FOR EVERYONE, you'll quickly go insane. Just get the ones you like and need and go on with the game. The game gives you a second, third, and sometimes forth chance to get the ones you missed, anway.
That makes me feel better. I always felt like if I didn't get them NOW, I never would, and later I'd be screwed.
I will admit that I liked the second one better if only because of all the different sidequests <3 but the first does have a small place in my heart if only for the battle system and the fact that wearing different armour changed your characters' looks. Small details help make a game more memorable, I suppose, though I will admit that the characters were rather ho-hum.
Can anyone play RPGs these days without fearing of missing something? I can't anymore, which is probably why I don't really play much these days.

I usually don't care so much about missing items as much as I care about missing cutscenes. Final Fantasy XII's Zodiac Spear is a bit of a dick move though.

all that being said, though - why try to collect everything when it makes more sense NOT to, so subsequent playthroughs are different experiences?
That's what I do. I know sometimes it's hard to find time to play a game more than once, but I grew up without having a lot of money, so the thought of spending up to fifty dollars on a game and playing it only once ever? Fuck that.
Ditto. First play through is for the story and what sidequests pop up. Second/Third/Fourth play throughs are for finding stuff. If the story is really good then there'll be more than one 'story play through' (ie: if it has different endings or changing storyline) but anything more is for collection.
Actually set this 'standard' of RPG play when I started playing Suikoden. First time get the 'bad' ending, second get the good, third try to get everything else. Of course, this was in a time before the internet was a temptation. In my day you had to rely on either word of mouth or finding secret items yourself. None of this forum/info sharing stuff.
And now I feel old.

HA! I'm happy it I spend $50 on a game and I play halfway through it !
Speaking from personal experience, there definitely seems to be a correlation between people who play RPGs and people with a near-obsessive, completionist attitude. I myself have restarted many RPGs when I discovered that I had missed a sidequest or item. I'm just glad I didn't know about the Zodiac Spear until after I beat the game.
You can still get a Zodiac Spear in the Necrohol as a treasure, ftr.
yes I have seven of them :<

I still own the first one, but I got my ps2 too late to play the second one (before they stopped selling it in my area). I wish I could get my hands on a copy that worked without paying an arm and a leg for it.
I am unhappy that EBs/Gamestops have inevitably focused their tradin' on the new console games. I live for buying the old games of the previous generation for a ridiculously low price - but now that they only seem to be looking for the current gen, their prices for trade in of ps2 games and the like have fallen so nobody would bother selling them there. now I have to wait a few years for the process to start again! And I'm still missing some damn games you bastards!
J-Thought time...
-FFIX was incredible for me, it ranked 2nd as my favorite FF. I liked how they went back to their roots instead of the whole sci-fi thing, they did it well in FF7, but not as well in FF8 honestly. The characters give me the same vibe as FF6's with a hero who can steal, one who can use sword attacks etc. Great game, now if only they'd keep makin' those games with that kind of setting...
-FFVII... the game I call the first timers RPG game. Most people I know started on FF7, I started on FF6. (Technically I started on FF1, but I wasn't aware of what the game was since I was still shittin' green.) The game was good, but not perfect. I did like the materia system though.
-Earthbound was the first actual RPG I played durin' my youth, and I was hooked instantly. I loved everything about it, the characters, the music, hell the funky visuals when you fight the enemies were great. I treated this game as my bible for the longest time... til' I played FF6.
-FFV ranked 3rd on my favorite FF's. I'll agree with a lot that the story wasn't all that great, but I loved it nonetheless. The job system is what made me love this game so much. They need to make FF's with this system more often. FFX-2 did it perfectly, but if only it wasn't so girly.
-FFVI is not only my number 1 favorite FF game, but it is my favorite game of all time. Everything about it was awesome, characters, music, visuals, the settting, EVERYTHING. This was in my mind the perfect RPG in my mind.
-I played Chrono Trigger a lot in my younger days, nowadays I can't get myself to complete it as much anymore. When the DS version came out, I didn't play it that much. But don't get me wrong, Chrono Trigger is a great game, just take my advice don't play it 100 or more times... it'll start to bore ya.
-I really liked Chrono Cross... I felt that its story was a little deeper than Chrono Trigger. Some parts on the game were a little frustrating, but other than that, I think this game was made well... with the exception of a lot of the characters.
-I never played Xenogears personally, so I don't know that much... all I know is that F** is the only ballsy hero I know other than Tr**** from No More Heroes. Actually gets some. Heh heh.
-Heh heh heh... FF8... *slits wrist*
Those are my thoughts.... I guess.
