YDS' LET'S TRY THREAD
Posts
People just aren't going to fucking remember that the fifth door on the right opens different from the rest because the creator was a dink and copied the wrong door event or something. There are oodles of things wrong with our games; the easiest way to find the tiny mistakes that should be removed with a coat of polish to make a quality game is to watch a total newbie to the game explore.
When Karsu and I released the Arian Wild Battle Demo, Silviera or Anaryu or Solitayre (I think Soli) sent me a bunch of videos of him playing so that I could see what people were trying and figuring out. Boss gimmicks and enemy weaknesses and skill usages might seem natural to the developer, but to the random player? You can't know that without the type of feedback that is watching somebody play your game.
If you can't be assed to watch the episodic releases of people recording incredibly important information about whether or not your game is worth anybody else's time, you are officially lazy, an incompetent developer, and overall a total dinkspot.

Personally, I think Let's Try is an excellent idea. In the past I used to have friends at school play my game and I would watch them play and listen to their observations. Reviews and comments are great for feedback, but as a review is writter (usually) *after* the game has been played, unless it is very in depth, it is only going to focus on the aspects that really stood out the author. Real time feedback, which is given on the fly is excellent for addressing the little things that may otherwise be missed; you're watching the player and you can see what's working and what isn't.
I'm watching Craze's LT's at the moment and I watched a few of YDS' as well; you're doing a great job and I fully support this!
I might even do one myself if I get bored.

Video reviews like these are really good because the authors have thought about what they're going to say and taken the time to articulate their thoughts properly... that's the difference between good reviews and Let's Try videos.
ahahahahaha YAHTZEE? Dude the big difference is that Yahtzee is a comedian and YDS is giving an in-depth look about how the player deals with several obstacles without having to write a single word down. All yahtzee cares about is bashing the game and making jokes, theres is 0 feedback an actual developer could use from these vids except maybe, "oh well... that boss was too hard I guess." In YDS's case you see exactly why the boss was hard for her, did she not get that hidden chest? did she not use a good job combo? is it her tactics? Most written reviews will be like "Yeah the boss was too hard because he has a lot of HP" but s/he could be wrong. Imagine if you had some magical trick of being able to see through the eyes of the players and his/her thought process, such technology will exist someday.............
Reviews have the problem with being constrained by language and perspective. Ever watch a Yahtzee review of a game you never played? You are probably going to agree with him because you have no idea how the game actually feels or presents itself and the fact that you chuckled a couple of times. LTs: theres no bullshit, it's just someone playing your game and reacting to what happens. It's really easy to spot whether or not a problem was the player's fault or the developer's fault. IDK i guess thats really useless.
I like what Deckiller did for HR, where he LT'd it and he reviewed it. (Actually, he LP'd it, but he was going in blind and giving crits so it's all just a name.)
Did you not read my post??? I didn't mention anything about "silly bugs" but rather spotting things like BALANCE or DIFFICULTY or LEARNING CURVE. Those are pretty hard to analyze through written words. I'm honestly just baffled as to why you do not want to watch the video at all for no good reason, even if you do not like the method of feedback, maybe you should "try."

I don't think people have a photographic memory, Corfaisus, but I do think that if something is truly "terrible" then the player would remember it. Equally, if something is "terrible" then they should be able to say why they believe that to be the case. I'd just prefer to have feedback that has been thought through and put into context than feedback that is reactionary.
What sort of context are you looking for? Do you expect people to think through why your game sucked dick before telling you that your game sucked dick, as if it made a difference with time? Do you think that people will take what is said in an LT and spin it into something else just for the sake of dragging you or your game's name through the dirt? By ignoring the videos, you allow your games to be worse than they could be. I might dare to go as far as to say that you believe that your game is flawless if you turn a blind eye to the concerns of the community.
Please, take that outrageous ego of yours and toss it in the garbage.
Speaking for myself, I like my own games so much that I love any kind of feedback, and it would be amazing to watch someone playing them, either in person or through a video (LT). Even if the person was just cursing or saying random stuff with no feedback value, it would be a lot of fun. It just intrigues me how someone can just not care about something like that. And I also think it's very impolite to completely refuse someone's feedback just because you don't like it's format, regardless of the content.

Hell's icing over. I agree with everything in calunio's post.
I will make sure not to read any of F-G's reviews because it is a pointless endeavor and I won't learn anything from it.

@Darken: Apologies, I seem to have unfairly lumped you in with Craze. I'll edit my post. And don't get me wrong, I have "tried" watching these videos (not the ones for Riot Grrrl, some of the earlier ones people released), but my disillusion with Let's Play videos makes it hard for me to take them seriously. I just don't see that changing, even when the videos are for my game, but you're probably right in that I should "try" .
Yeah and I would love to see that you at least have the courtesy to "try" and give YDS some feedback on the few videos that she has done for the game. I know you already told her it's not necessary, but you ought to try watching hers for a change. Her videos are different from the previous ones you've watched. And she's the one who first came up with the term "Let's Try"! And she really does show exactly how "Let's Try" videos are different from "Let's Play".
Different opinions are entitled to different people, so I would respect if you say you don't like YDS' videos 'cause it's your honest opinion, but it's unfair if you don't even give it a "try".

Cool story bro.
I should be surprised that you actually went so low as to use this, but frankly, I'm not.
YDS, I have to say that I pity your poor soul for having so much bad luck in Eternal Paradise! Never has any else told me that the battles were too hard or unbalanced. It's always been the exact opposite: too easy and nicely balanced! That, and your issues with saving that you seem to be having! Ah ha ha.
Just take the Gaze enemy out first (or Silence it), and then do the same for the Elec Bug before going for the Abyssals or any other enemy. It's definitely not a game where you can hit Spacebar and hope to win! (For those of you who just might do that!)

LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

Hey YDS, can you do a Let's Try of my game Vindication at some point? It is kind of an older game so no rush.
I kind of want to do some Let's Try videos myself, but, like you, I don't want to just pick random games. And it seems like all the new games get snatched up pretty quickly by other people anyway. How do you get so many requests? Teach me how to be popular!
