Bathroom is for cats/dogs only?=P
What is this supposed to mean? O.O

Remember when I actually used to make games? Me neither.

I think it might be an event, the white borders just seem to blend in with the wall so it's not noticeable.

Yep, it looks like a door.

The red carpet seems awfully out of place in this appartment, by the way.
How is this for a girl's room?

And yeah, that's a door to the restroom. :P Not sure about that carpet, though. :O
i noticed a few screenies went without being commented. Hate it when that happens to me, so..

tom bombadil, your forest looks fairly generic to be honest. Mapping is good and all for a random forest path but it's not a screenshot to sell your game to people. As i said it's okay, but if that path is meant to be special in some way, i'd add some kinda point of interest. Like remains of some house, old statue forgotten in the woods, etc.

dreaded, it's really hard to see that battle chara. You might want to have lighter background if it's that battle character you want to be showcasing. Otherwise everything seems to match each other nicely.

mr.detective, that's a nice room for a girl. You're really improving with your mapping skills
Thanks. :P

I'm kinda running out of ideas here... Any advice for a different layout? :D

Incredible work Itaju! But you already know that...
No criticisms here!

That's why 2k3 will never die. Because it's infinitely more beautiful than anything VX ace can produce

That statement is incredibly false. Amazingly false. How beautiful a game can look depends almost entirely on the creator, and how hard their willing to try.

The reason 2k3, or in fact any RPG Maker is still active is due to the fact that people want to use them, or prefer to over others.

You kinda missed the point...NO VX Ace game looks like that. And probably never be as nice looking than anything produced in rpgmaker 2k3.
Have you not seen the other topic about it dying off? That's what my comment was in relation to. 2k3 will never die because talented people can make exceptionally beautiful games. (I base this on how games present themselves graphically, not mechanics/gameplay wise.

Seriously, it's more factual to say that 2k3 games look nicer than VX games. Nothing false about that.
VX Ace can produce exactly the same thing, if you wanted to. That's a fact.
That 2k3 would somehow automatically be prettier is not.
Actually it's possible to make prettier (read: closer to reality) sprites in VX Ace due to the higher resolution of the sprites, 16x16 vs 32x32.
I think its easier to make graphics in rpgmaker 2k3 and that is the reason it stays alive. For me the reason I'm using it is for that and familiarity. I'm a little old and short on time to learn a new developer and then make a game with it.

I'm not going to shit up this topic any more than necessary (and it wasn't necessary to begin with, let's keep that in mind) but here you are good sir:

I could probably say something asinine like "NO 2k3 game looks like that, and NEVER will" but I could also pull a bunch of examples of excellent looking 2k3 games. If you can't understand something as simple as this about indie game design then I don't think I can really help you out.

If you want to argue some more then feel free to PM me. I could be way more in depth.
Hell, if you know how to dither, you can make pretty sweet pictures in 2k3.

(From mine, just cause I want super-real stuff in with crappy 2d characters)

(Forever's End)

You've also got art from Love and War.

So, ummm, I dunno what you guys are talking about. What I do know is that that average VX game does not look good (or for that matter have much functionality without scripts). The average game may not look good on either maker, but saying none are like that is totally bogus.
LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

Still missing the point of my initial comment...that 2k3 isn't going anywhere despite new makers coming out.
And if you don't want to muck up the topic, could have just messaged me without trying to "win" pubically.

Providing examples doesn't help change my mind.

And SnowOwl is right, but barely anyone does it or it takes too much effort for people to actually accomplish.
Glad I generated so much discussion.

Itaju still has an amazing screenshot.
What I've actually found of the new games is that in terms of effort (oh yes, I'm aware that you can make a game overwrought, by spending too much time on it), they're rather lacking. What happens is the people involved make a game with about a months worth of understanding, and someone else's scripts. The new maker just came out, and because it's new, it's automatically awesome (rule one of testing new tech, take snapshots and do side my side comparisons; there are three pages to most menus in 2k3, in VX and XP it's down to 1-2, only but VX Ace does it improve again)

People working on 2k3 long enough? They can make complex weather systems that change with the seasons, ATB-esque battle systems, and all manner of custom menus. And most of this is well before DynRPG. Which some coaching, I made a cpp that allows you to track items used in battle.

I thought the point of your initial comment was to start a fight. I guess probably not, but that was how it came across. LET'S ALL BE FRIENDS

I did this a while ago but I'm posting it anyway to interrupt the silly conversation. I had to connect a lush green forest area with a spiky gray chasm cliff area for a friend's game. This is how the connecting map came out. I stuck a cave on either side of it also, so that it's not a direct connection.

This could probably have been connected directly to the cliff area, but not to the forest area. The grass is more vibrant in the forest. But that difference is much less jarring with a cave in between. The cliff area on the other hand has no plant life at all and also no dirt, it's all stone.

That is a fine map you got there LockeZ. I'd drop that brown-coloured part for a grey one, though. This map reminded me of a transitional map that we made ourselves a few years ago. We used a pretty nifty technique that you could look into.

What we essentially did was make a map twice:

One.
Two.

And then fused it together in Photoshop. This was the result.

I can explain the process better if you like.

Interesting blending method, actually.

I needed the dirt mixed with the stone to help make the transition to the forest less abrupt, since the forest is all dirt and bright grass. I agree it's a really strong contrast though; I probably could have desaturated it a little.
