LOL
Yeah, I also feel something awkward about it, but I can't pinpoint what it really is. Oh well, how is everything else? :D
I think the curtain is weird because I can't get any feeling of depth perception with it. How far away from that back wall is it really? Then when I'm staring at that, the picture in the back is WAAAAY nicer graphics than the rest of the objects; so it feels like it cheapens the items around it; which sucks because those musical instruments look nice. =)
I have that problem too. I'm of two minds about it, though. On the one hand, it creates a jarring effect if it's too detail vs the rest. On the other hand, I can't let anything go, ever. So they idea of finding (or making, if I was any better with art) good art and having to throw it away is kinda appalling.
Visual effects on TV screens don't always jive with the the reality of the world around us (from live action film Serenity).
But it tends to work in the opposite direction (lower quality) since our minds can't conceptualize something more real than real.

So, what would be the correct way to fix it? :D The back wall isn't that far, and I think that is a good enough distance.
About the TV's graphic, yeah, I know. XD
LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

Jungle settlement.
The three visible NPCs are probably gonna be the only inhabitants of this "town". (the fourth person in the screenshot is the player) Unlike most RPGs, though, this isn't some kind of abstraction. 90% of the places you visit in this game seriously have single-digit numbers of people alive in them. A couple of the "towns" actually only have one person in them, in fact.
I hate jungles, and decided against filling the town with billions of plants like I did the surrounding dungeon areas to the east and west. Hopefully the town stuff makes up for it.

I'm trying to logic out how a character would walk onto this stage on an "as-is" basis. If we presume that the lowest curtain tile is "above" the hero, and can be walked through, how would that look as a move-route? I'm thinking you can see character movement behind the curtain, though the movement would be obstructed by the curtain.
Unless they enter the stage at the wall section at the top of the screen. That's a possibility I hadn't considered.
That curtain is an A tile, so you can't walk through it. I plan to just let the NPCs walk on the stage from the stairs.
Any better ideas? :)

This room was quickly done for testing purposes only, but please tell me what you think of the light.
It's extra work for every map and causes further issues (different charsets for different rooms) but I will go for it if you think it's worth the effort..

@LockeZ: Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't jungles like really humid places, full with mosquitoes and other dangerous animals? One would need to be Insane to sleep in the open like that. At least make those beds into full-body sleeping bags or tents; Or, I don't know, maybe even a couple of broke-down cars. xD ...Also, at least put 'some' plants here and there.
@Kurisu: The map's not bad, although it could be a lot smaller. There's something odd about the lights too, but I can quite put my finger on it right now... Try different angles and levels of opacity and see what works best.

Graphically, this is fine (hell, I'm not gonna diss Locke's art).
In terms of a jungle however, there are two reasons to build a fence:
- To keep people from raiding/attacking you
- To keep animals out.
This fence should have one gap, unless you actually plan to make a path out of that top area. Also, the boxes should be inside the fence (anti-raiding measure vs other humans) and the box side should extend to the rock wall. If you really want this to be snazzy, you add a guard on the tower and/or a bell, and make the entrance close somehow.

These people are stranded here, so sleeping in the open isn't avoidable. Sleeping bags would probably make a little more sense, but I couldn't get them to both look like sleeping bags and fit with the existing tileset, so I settled for a sort of blanket-pile on the ground. I should really add a few plants though.

The cave at the top does actually lead out of the town (it's how you first arrive, in fact). Also, the fence is purely for protection from wild monsters and demons, not humans, and my thought was that the crates actually work to add more protection by acting as a makeshift extension of the wall. Maybe that is stupid? I could get rid of the one crate behind the wall I guess.
Plz insult my art! That's why I post it.

Light (zoom x1.5)
Well, first, the angle of the light doesn't make sense. It changes angles when it hits the corner of the wall. Or, well, I guess more specifically, it changes angles in the wrong direction.
Dotted lines are the edges of the light:
Wrong:
-##----------
: '. |
: '. |
: '. L_______________________
: ' .
: ' .
: ' .
Right:
-##----------
: ' . |
: '|
: L_______________________
: '.

Aside from that, a more, uh, "systemic" problem is that the way you're doing the light is adding a glare, because you're adding white to the lit places instead of adding black to the unlit places. It makes it harder to see the lit areas than the unlit areas, which is the opposite of how it should be, unless it's supposed to be blindingly bright light.
I didn't mean the cave. I meant the upper left part there was this huge gap where I'd assume there should be fence but wasn't. To the immediate left of the tent.
Well, in any case, the other issue with the crate is alot of animals can climb short barriers.
Btw, to keep deers out? You need either like 8 ft (yes, seriously 8 ft) of fencing, or fencing thin enough where they can't see the top. So yea,

Any thoughts? The only thing I can see as unappealing is the lack of detail in the bottom-right corner of the house.

Well, apparently they have been in there long enough to build a fence and a couple of platforms. If they know how to work the wood, it begs the question: Why haven't they built a cabin yet? And even if they just arrived there and found everything as is, the first thing you do in that kind of situation is set up a shelter with palm leaves or something (at least, that's what movies have taught me). ...Anyway, is not a big deal. It just seemed odd to me. But just to play it safe, why don't you move the Inn to under that canvas roof? =P
@GamingMitchell: Yeah, just put some stuff in the bottom-right corner. Also, why the table and chairs are not aligned with the carpet?

Why would there be a window behind the bookshelf? Remove that, and move the table and chairs to the right. :D
There could be one. Furniture planning is done after the fact, so it's sometimes to save space, rather than according to detail as you might think. Shelving is moved close together, so window is lost.
Basically, the same logic sometimes cuts off usable electrical outlets, since you can't find space for that dresser without having it there.

@SnowOwl - That is just not creepy or weird in the slightest.. I'm not scared.
Not really working on the game, just thought I would show something that I don't believe I've shown. But hey who knows?

Also just a store..
