Date, create, and share!

Assuming the role of a male high school student in Japan, the player will meet, interact with, and date a number of female characters with the goal of winding up with one of them at the end of a 101-day calendar. Yeah, you've seen this all before...or have you?

In other romance sims, there's little reason to replay the game again once you've pursued all the characters you're interested in. But Heartache 101 allows for a variable female cast. The number of characters in the game is completely open-ended!

You can create new characters and add them to the game, share them with other users, and add characters created by other users. You can create the images for custom characters from a template, or use images you created yourself, or images from any source. (only "standing" images of characters can be imported; there is no event CG in the game) A simple scripting language is provided for writing story events. You can also customize some of the music.

The game system itself is in part a visual novel interface with gameplay that include conversational decision-making, board game-like mechanics, stat management, financial management, and more.

New game forthcoming, some might like to know

Since I've been asked many times if I would ever make a sequel to Heartache....

Well this is not a sequel. In very many ways it's radically different. But some might find that it partially retains a bit of the same feel?

So I'm posting the first public screenshot here, and whoever is interested, look for a game page up in the next week or two with the title "Where One Citizen". Game is not complete yet, but after 10 years of development it's about time to start showing it!

Tried that; it doesn't work, either. I also tried making a .wav file of the song and setting her theme to be one of the built-in musics, and neither of them works, either - even though I can call the built-in files manually if I want them to play.

I suppose, until I get this sorted out, she'll just be silent. I guess I can play random built-in songs for the story scenes, but there'll be no music for the generic chat encounters.
This game is excellent! I just finished my first play-through of 1.4 this morning, after playing for most of yesterday afternoon and well into the night -- at least 2:00 AM, if you were wondering. I downloaded yesterday before 2.0 was posted, and now I can't wait to try the new version! I'll probably write a full review within the next couple of days -- expect 5 stars, because I loved everything about it! Sequal please? :D
@Sandy87
That is odd. Could you send the relevant files to me (or post them here) so I can try it?

@1adude
Thanks for your feedback :) I will in the future likely be making either a sequel or a game in a similar vein.
If you *do* make a sequel (or similar game), one of my friends who I mentioned this game to (who usually plays Otome games) requested that the protagonist be female. She doesn't want to play this one simply because the protagonist is male.

I want to try it too!
@flowerthief and Marrend:

Zip file

Anyone else who wants to help figure this out (or is just nosy and wants to play with a half-done, endingless character) is welcome to take a look as well.
Thanks for that!
Well, it seems to be a problem with the file itself. Even the RPG Maker editor won't play it. As to why RPG Maker won't play it but other media players will, I don't know. May be something to research when I have time.

Anyhow, there is a workaround. Simply convert the file to ogg. You can use an online ogg converter like this one or you can use Audacity (which I can confirm works and will play in the game).

While I was troubleshooting this I found some errors that are my fault, for instance any condition involving YEN will not work at all--the game will tell you there is a line "declared after Choice declaration but before first Branch declaration", but don't listen to it; this one is my fault. I'll be sure to get a new version with fixes for these pretty soon.

Please let me know if there's anything else!
I have some time to work now, will see if I can give you guys another spoiler today...

I'm not hearing it either, strangely enough. For fun and profit, I transferred it to various RPG Maker engines to see if they could pick it up in the editor.

VX Ace: Not playing
VX: Nope
2K3: Gives me a "not implemented" error. Continuously. I had to close the engine through Task Manager!
2K: Not even listed.

Great to hear! I look forward to playing it. If you ever need a guinea pig for testing, please let me know!

I was actually thinking that there could be an option so that you could select your gender at the beginning of the game. It would require a lot of the character branches to be rewritten so that the story made sense, but could provide a lot more playtime without the need for some excess characters. Anyway, great idea!
Funny that you say that, as adding a gender select option is something that has been on my mind for a long time. It's just that every time I look at the work it would entail I shake my head and go "Nah". But one of these day perhaps...! As the game has become more popular I've been adding features lately that I didn't think I would add.

Version 3.0? I initially thought the same thing, but as far as it goes, I imagined it would probably be better to make a sort of "Girls Side" version, where your classmates might be some of the girls from this game, and you could chase the protagonists classmates (or maybe even the protagonist himself, but he doesn't really have a set personality). Looking forward to Hiro's story.
Haha, the protagonist's classmates? Who wants to date those guys? :D But, if this ever gets made, I wouldn't stop anyone from writing custom content to that effect.
Hi there! How do I save? Right click doesn't work :(

The option to save happens at the end of the day, after the phone screen pops up.

The right mouse button should, in theory, be the "cancel/menu" button. It would be as if you pressed the escape key, or any other key-binding that is linked to "cancel/menu". As an aside, RPG Maker XP has at least two keyboard bindings to the "cancel/menu" action at default, and I don't think flowerthief changed that.
Wow this is very well made!! First I had doubts with the board game system, but it turned out interesting!! The script is engaging and the way it changed with whether or not we know certain girls, it's just great. And skill points play a vital role in the continuation of the script, not just delaying it ^^
Glad you like it :)
I played this last week, and I enjoyed it quite a bit! Enjoyed it much more than I would have imagined. Even if I cheated a bit to pull off a Minato ... I had a blast.
Was expecting this to happen : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6e-CotiCU-E
(And it was dangerously close in one story xD)

xD Anyway great job! I only played through Riho, Shihoko, Miki, and Keika's stories so far... was surprised that I hadn't even met the others O_O! Will be replaying to see everyone else~

All the non-generic endings I got all happened somewhat similarly. That's the only thing that bothered me a bit... Though the concept is solid. Where would you both end up in X years...

Guess without the player's "help" the main character will be predictable xD
Thanks for the feedback :) Glad you enjoyed it.

The only character whose ending takes a different form is the secret character who doesn't go to your school.
I am so addicted to this game! I've reached the Miki ending which was bittersweet, and the Shihoko ending which was pretty depressing. Is there an ending in there where they just leave high school together and live a happy life together, or did I just do something wrong and mess up the endings I got?
