Date, create, and share!

Assuming the role of a male high school student in Japan, the player will meet, interact with, and date a number of female characters with the goal of winding up with one of them at the end of a 101-day calendar. Yeah, you've seen this all before...or have you?

In other romance sims, there's little reason to replay the game again once you've pursued all the characters you're interested in. But Heartache 101 allows for a variable female cast. The number of characters in the game is completely open-ended!

You can create new characters and add them to the game, share them with other users, and add characters created by other users. You can create the images for custom characters from a template, or use images you created yourself, or images from any source. (only "standing" images of characters can be imported; there is no event CG in the game) A simple scripting language is provided for writing story events. You can also customize some of the music.

The game system itself is in part a visual novel interface with gameplay that include conversational decision-making, board game-like mechanics, stat management, financial management, and more.

New game forthcoming, some might like to know

Since I've been asked many times if I would ever make a sequel to Heartache....

Well this is not a sequel. In very many ways it's radically different. But some might find that it partially retains a bit of the same feel?

So I'm posting the first public screenshot here, and whoever is interested, look for a game page up in the next week or two with the title "Where One Citizen". Game is not complete yet, but after 10 years of development it's about time to start showing it!

Has anyone encountered problems with the character customizer application lately? There was a comment on the official site where all that occurred when running the program was a black screen.

Don't know if this is a bug or if it is part of the game design. Several times I have had encounters with Riho where I am given the option to ask for her sign when I already have it. She is the only character that it has happened to me with. Seems like you are supposed to get the phone # option after you have a girl's sign.
I'm new to this game so I haven't played it the numerous times you guys have, but I thought I would just throw it in here.

Are you sure you're just playing around? It looks like you're deliberately looking for bugs and rush here to tell us about it to show off. I'm asking because if you aren't... consider yourself hired.
Well, sorta, it's not like we pay or anything, but we work for free, too(Mutual suffering, ho!), and could use a bugtester this perceptive and thorough. If you are correct, these errors have been around since first release and neither of us noticed before, obviously we suck compared to you. What do you think? Wanna?^^
Or if you're playing around, then congratualtions! I'm gravely afraid of you. Please proceed to give a warning and a ten second advantage before you unleash your powers upon us.

Hmmn? I edited my post since I further couldn't confirm it. I have gone back to previous saves so when I saw that I no longer had her sign I figured I had better edit my post. I don't want anyone looking into anything I can't confirm.
And I am definitely not wanting to "Show off". That is why I immediately deleted my post when I realized I couldn't confirm it. I was certain I had her sign but when I went back to a save it said I didn't so I deleted my post. Yet somehow you could read it even though it is empty?

Yep, all that red means is that the heartache meter is approaching max, similar to how your life bar turns red in an RPG when your character's health approaches 0.

Confidence boost is not displayed visually and is unrelated to the heartache meter.

Thank you. Now my question is what is it based on? Is it two days before you reach max? I currently have Ruri 0/1 red, 21 2/3 red, Shoko 4/6 red, Izumi 2/12 white, Riho 1/12 white, Hinami 1/12 white, and Shihoko 9/12 white. Since Shihoko is 75% and is still white I figured it must be # of days but I know I have had characters at 2/6 or 3/6 with a red figure. So maybe it depends on the # of Characters you have and displays red based on that percentage?

And I am definitely not wanting to "Show off".

*Hides under the table*
It is simply whether it's 3 days before max. Shihoko 9/12 won't go red, but Shihoko 10/12 will. Yes, this means that a Lovesick character will always be red.

2/6 shouldn't go red. If you can confirm that that's happening I will have to look into it.
I like dating sims :D Question, does the game include H-scenes? I like that in sim dates as I find it lame when you only get to kiss.

Then we are quite lame for focusing on story and the personalities of the girls instead. Sorry to dissapoint. Next time we make a game, we'll make sure to ingore age of consent and focus entirely on screwing so people like you don't have to registrate just to ask if it worths the ten minutes it takes to download. Anything else?:/

I didn't mean it offensive :| Don't take it that way ;_;
Oh and btw, I found a spelling error in the courtyard in the prologue.
Miki: ''Excuse me! I'll move so that you can gaze at that girls' wing entrance to your heart's content, as you have just -admiited- is your hobby.''
It should be admitted :O
Anyway, I didn't mean anything with what I said. I just think a game should have a feeling of satisfaction when you complete a goal. ''I love you'' is not really satisfactory but that's just me I guess. Again I don't mean anything by it.
edit: What the hell? You don't have to act like a b. Geez! What the heck!
Oh btw, I only asked a question. Just because MY OPINION is that I find it kinda lame when 90% of dating sims/visual novels on the internet end with ''I love you'' doesn't mean I hate the game. You don't have to be so rude.

Heh, no, no they don't. More than half of them doesn't even bother with a proper storyline. It's just sex on top of sex. Check VNDB if you don't believe.

Rude I don't have to be, and neither do you have to be hypocritical. Empty apologies aren't getting you anywhere, by the way. Saying something is 'just your opinion' or the fact you didn't mean to offend doesn't make you less offensive. Your so called opinion no less undignified than my sarcasm, a lot less than your boringly vulgar style of speech, worthless as a critique, and demeans both our work and the value of love between children, among which some have no business in each other's pants yet for up to half a decade. Come back with a valid point and a functioning moral compass. After that, we can discuss each other's table manners.
Please, no fighting! Dozen, please try to be nice.
Toby, thanks for reporting the typo.

Thanks for confirming that you're a close-minded prick that can't take critics. I honestly don't feel like playing this game anymore now that I realize it was made by a prick that can't take criticism. I didn't insult the game at all, stop implying it. It's not offensive, the problem here is you can't take criticism. I gave a reason why I didn't like something about it, I didn't just say ''the game is lame''. I said that something about the game is kinda lame in my opinion, and guess what? Fucking deal with it. Before you make a game, think about the criticism, because if you can't handle it, welp, that won't earn you a good reputation. Anyway, thank you for showing me what kind of person you are :)

No problem, I like reporting bugs/mistakes in games because when they get fixed a game immediately looks better imho. Oh and I didn't want to fight either, but I couldn't just drop it there when someone starts to be a prick to me just because I shared my opinion.

Just for confirmation: No, there are no H-scenes. This isn't one of those games. Also, note the sixth item on this list:

You are specifically forbidden from:

  • hacking, whether it is the website or its users

  • spamming content and/or services

  • exploiting website vulnerabilities

  • submitting content that contains virus or any form of rogue code

  • submitting or posting any content that can be construed as unlawful

  • submitting or posting tasteless content, including rape, child pornographic, racist, etc.

  • harassing other users

This list is not meant to be all-inclusive and the site administration will use their best judgment to ensure that the website is a welcoming place for our users.

I'm pretty sure an H-game would be listed under "tasteless content"!

Not really, imho. Rape, child pornography and racism is not really the same. Oh well. I don't mind. It was just a question, and I didn't expect to be insulted for sharing my opinion (Not talking about you), but oh well. Some people..
I'm the game's creator, I should mention. I'm not against sexual content in games, but I wanted to avoid it in order to reach the widest audience I can.

I see. I guess I understand. I'm liking the game so far, by the way. I have a question though.. How do I get the heartache counter up? I went on a date with Miki and it went up once but the heart dissapeared after. and do favorite dating spots increase chance of succesfully asking to have a date?
Oh and sorry if I ruined the mood with the sexual thing. It's just that after katawa shoujo I kinda got used to playing VNs/dating sims like that.

And that's good for you. See, when the heartache counter fills up, it means you disappointed the girl("broke her heart", so to say). Up until now it only happened if you neglected to visit or call her; in a recent update, the counter can be filled with a story command, though that haven't been used in custom content, to my knowledge. Taking care of user-made routes along with the ocassional community support is what I do here, btw. Built-ins are entirely are entirely flowerthief's handiwork, as he said.
About whether favorite date spots increase the chance of successfully asking for a date:

They don't. They only increase the affection gains at the end of a date.

Oh, right. That's good to know then, I was kinda confused :P

Oh, okay. I'm glad the heart dissapeared.

edit: Is there a limit to mental notes? Some of my mental notes for Miki dissapeared after I got more.
