First and foremost, the meat and bones progress of Chronology is going swimmingly. However, I am running into a few snags in terms of the outside overhaul that's been the big news for my game as of late; I need talent.
So here's where I'm at; the music is mostly covered, the facesets and such are covered (Thanks JosephSeraph), and the script and code is by me, and that's fine. What I'm having an issue with is securing talent for two major parts of the overhaul; Tilesets and Character Graphics. As many of you know, securing good talent is tricky, and for various reasons, indie artists can be very tricky; I've seen many cases of indie commissioning collabs that reek of shadiness, unreliability, and unprofessional whatnots.
As anyone who's ever been hired by me can attest, I am none of those things. So I'm having trouble finding good talent, especially good talent for spriting character sets and tilesets that match the general feel of what I already got going.
So with that being said, if you know anyone that might be interested in my project, point them in my direction, or vice versa. I'd be happy to hire you!

I know last blog post I said I was going to hold off on new faceset updates until some of the other overhauling had more progress, but after this latest batch that JosephSeraph cooked up, I just couldn't hold off.
As you can see we're really coming together on the palette and style with the facesets. While different characters will obviously have a different tone (most of these characters are affiliated with Judec, which has a more rigid tone in terms of color), things are definitely coalescing, and I'm super excited for what we have and what remains.
Emperor Cyril Veodor
The 41st Emperor of the Judec Empire, and a tired man who's seen better days. Having lost his heir, much of his strength, and the love of his people, the Emperor has lost much of what it takes to rule. Currently fighting for his Empire and his throne against the Homefront Rebellion.
Duke Mikhail Vasilli
Nephew of Emperor Cyril, Veteran of the Great Campaign, and a populist, forward thinking political figure within the Empire who is beginning to think he could do a better job at running the Empire than the Emperor. What can he throw his weight behind to make that happen?
General Pietr Reiner
General of the 2nd Imperial Army (Homeland Defense). A tenured veteran of the Great Campaign, and one of the Empire's most senior and powerful military officials. Mentor to Callox, and his superior in the battles against the Homefront Rebellion. Injured in the Great Campaign, front line combat is behind him, but still has much to offer the Imperial Army. Is incredibly loyal to the Empire as a concept, and is willing to do anything to see her standing strong.
Helena Geil
Leader of the Homefront Rebellion, a rebel faction determined to overthrow the Imperial government. A former Imperial Army officer, Helena is an extremely popular battlefield commander and figurehead for the rebellion. Serious, headstrong, and determined to the point, like General Reiner, she'll do anything to ensure the victory of the rebellion.
Callox's battles against the Homefront Rebellion are an important starting point on his journey as a person, both formatively, and as time goes on and he travels, when he sees how small those struggles (and to some extent, the Empire) seem comparatively in the face of bigger ones ahead.
Rahaka
A 'Messenger', a warrior-priest left as a relic from bygone times, put in stasis by the Ancients, but due to the ruin he was in being damaged, he loses much of his memory. A giant of a man with a terrifying, and almost mystical looking visage, but is actually rather silent, and inquisitive. Joining in the 2nd chapter, he's an important link for Callox to understand the less mundane aspects of his journey
I'm stoked. Let's keep rockin'!

The transformation of Chronology continues with the transformation and addition of new custom facesets, courtesy of JosephSeraph!
In an interesting twist, JosephSeraph did such a good job with the last guy that he'd fit perfectly on another character (that wouldn't have a face at all otherwise) and I'm making an extra/other faceset for the last guy.
This is also one of the last instances where some of the facesets resemble the original; with the first few faces, there were some, like the two soldiers, that I liked so much that I wanted an original take on it (with the color scheme I edited in), but something to notice.
And now for some progress gifs.
This will be the last update with just the facesets; the next big update I hope to be able to show off the facesets with brand new bodies.

Some of you may remember the recent announcement that Chronology of the Last Era is getting a visual upgrade to all original assets, to prepare for a possible (and looking more probable) commercial, more professional release.
I'm glad to announce JosephSeraph's addition to the team and contribution via brand new, original facesets for the characters of the game! I'm super stoked to have someone of his talent gracing my project, and I'm looking forward to everything that's coming next in my project. Check out the first batch!

For reference, this is what I had before; edited facesets from the PSX RPG Maker. Out with the old...
..and in with the new.
And a bonus! The evolution of Callox.
I'm super stoked about this, guys. Much love, and much thanks to JosephSeraph for bringing my dreams to a reality. Check him out and perhaps even support him!

Adding a Codex/Encyclopedia: A good idea?

So as I launch my game into the 'professional, will sell for money' sphere slowly but surely, I'm beginning to think of minor improvements to Chronology. One of those things was an in game codex/encyclopedia, similar to the one in the Mass Effect series. Do you guys think that would be a good idea, and if the plot/narrative is interesting, is it something that you guys can see it being worthwhile that players would read?
Note: This would not significantly impact development time.

If you've been following Chronology, you might be aware of my recent decision to move the game forward graphically by using original visual assets, to eventually 'uplift' the game into a more professional, polished, and hopefully commercial avenue.
To this end, I'm going to need the talent of spriters and other artists to make that dream come true. Right now, I'm assessing what I have vice what I need, and while I can handle some of the small stuff on my own or through purchasable assets, a lot of it is beyond me. So here's what I'll need;
-Monsters
-Tilesets
-Character Sets
-Portraits
-Menu Assets
-Battle Backgrounds
-Battle Animations/Animations in general
-Misc sprite assets, like pictures and such
Most importantly, I need my visual direction to be both coherent and consistent with both itself, and the rough visual direction I have currently. That last part is sort of hard to quantify, but if you've been following my game for a while, you kind of know what visual direction I'm going for; the pure SNES, sort of darker, FFVI esque design feel.
All of this at once is a tall order, so I'm handling it piece by piece as I can get it. With that being said, if any of you know any spriters or artists or anyone that can fit that mold (even if they can only provide one of the type of assets I listed above), point me in their direction or point them in mine! It'll be a big help!

An Important Announcement: A Fresh Coat of Paint.

Sort of a big announcement, or at least potentially.
Backstory: So I was chatting up my game and going over some design documents with some homies, and the sentiment came up more or less of "You've got a really good thing going on here. You ever think about selling it? on Steam or such?"
And I thought about it, and...yeah. Maybe I should. I think I have a solid plot, mechanical design, framework, and I'm almost done! Putting Chronology on Steam would get the game to a far wider audience and invigorate me as a designer. However, I couldn't. Why? Well...asset wise, it needs a fresh coat of paint. In other words, it needs original assets and not the rips and edits I've been using.
Do not get me wrong, I've been a staunch defender of rips and edits in the hobby design corner for like, ever! They allow a designer to build up something using something else (and this is a thing in the art world utilized by very famous artists, 're-contextualization') and focus on the meat while they free up assets to build it. Also, editing is a lot of fun, I liked doing it for its own sake. It served me well forever. If you're making a game and using rips, and rips are the difference between your game being released or unreleased, use those rips! Either way, that's here nor there and this isn't about the ethics of rips or whatever, so shush.
However, I can't sell it, or more specifically, I can't sell Chronology as its with rips. And even if I didn't sell it, using FFVI assets and the like inherently limits my audience in the wider world.
So I'm announcing that henceforth I'm taking Chronology forward to eventually transition all of its visual assets to original ones. What does this mean for you, the (hopeful) consumer? A few things.
-This pushes the release date back until first quarter 2017 at the earliest, but this does NOT affect the mechanical development. It's still being developed in RM VX Ace, it's still being worked on as is, the plot is still being written and meat and bones of the game are still being chipped away at. In other words, this does not affect me opening up the program and working on the game.
-This is ONLY the visual assets. The music, plot, mechanics, script, etc etc were all original to begin with. This does mean I'll need new tilesets, charactersets, battle animations, and other visual assets. This is a fair amount of work, but I'm not building anything else from scratch.
-While replacing the visual assets will take a fair amount of work/time/some cash, in many cases its more of a one for one swap. Basically, the towns using FFVI chipsets will now be original, the forests using Rudra assets will now be original forests, the character and battle graphics will be similar in scale and appearance, just not FFVI edits, and so on and so forth. I don't have to recreate entire maps from scratch, I 'only' have to edit and fix graphical transition hiccups that comes from importing new assets and exporting the old ones.
-By 'original' I am not willing to accept a drastic decrease in quality. My game WILL be differentiated from the many other VX Ace games, graphically. You're not going to see glossy, Alex, RTP stuff. The visual look and feel of my game won't depart from the one it has now as much as possible.
-This won't be free, but I have some ideas (and some capital) to fund it, and I know of some talented people who I can ask around for to see if anyone is interesting in doing this. However if you know of anyone, please point me in their direction, or vice versa!
-This isn't, nor is selling the game on Steam, absolutely set in stone, but I am leaning towards it heavily. Until then, like I said above, I'll continue to work on the game like I did before!
Whew. That's a lot. Any questions or thoughts?

Callox Pallisade
Dmitri Harcourt
Dais Kreutz
Introducing Metis! One of the most fun and interesting characters on the roster, I hope to make people take another look at what the 'Rogue' archetype can be.
Hired bodyguard (and loyal friend) to Professor Dais Kreutz on his investigation, Metis is an skilled, if somewhat reticent warrior from a foreign land. Metis joins Callox alongside the professor as a package deal, and what a deal she is; high agility combined with utility and buffs for days!
Metis a dagger wielding Rogue, ready to lend her skills to the benefit of your party and to the detriment of your enemies. As a high agility character, Metis has much utility, beyond just 'being fast'. Her Guile skill tree allows her to employ misdirection, chaos, confusion against groups of enemies, Menace allows Metis to disembowel and dismantle single targets AND take advantage of their weaknesses to great effect, and Alchemy gives her and allies much appreciated buffs and bonuses to make your life easier and your enemies lives harder!
A lot of Metis' skills revolve around making enemy forces miserable while aiding your own forces. The ability Up in Smoke allows Metis to eliminate all threat headed her way and enables her to stay safe in the shadows, and perform critical hits while obscured! And of course what would a rogue be without the ability to Steal? Unlike most games, you know your probability to steal an item right off the bat, so you can decide whether or not its worth your turn and time to do so!
Metis' also has an array of offensive skills as well; skills like Quick Nick allow her to strike before anyone else in the turn, sacrificing a bit of damage for the ability to possibly end battles quickly and decisively.
Perhaps the most fun of Metis skills are her Alchemy skills, while they cost actual items to cast, they grant an array of buffs and powers to your enemies to enhance and complement their strengths!
Here's some other skills that Metis brings to the table
Misdirect-Reduce 50% Threat to a selected ally.
Exploit-Ignores Back Row, and inflicts double damage on Stunned enemies.
Shadow Walk-If attacking from Hidden status, inflict a guaranteed Critical Hit.
Premeditation-Marks an enemy, and that enemy is more susceptible to critical hits for 3 turns.
Echo of Silence-Stay Hidden for 2 additional turns.
Gimme the Loot-Increase Steal Rate by 25%
That's Metis for you! Employ her to maximum effect to screw your enemies day up! She's one of the most fun characters in the game, and can complement any party. I hope you have as much fun using her as I had designing her. Next up is our gunner mercenary, Amelia V. Drangeford! Stay tuned!

'Riots Break Out Across Judec in Protest of Coronation of Emperor Mikhail Veodor'

Let's check out the newspaper to see what's happening in the world of Atlas...
'Mere weeks after the conclusion of the Imperial Civil War and the Homefront Liberation Army's victory over the Alexi imperial family, riots and protests are already breaking out across the Empire in opposition to the crowning of Duke Mikhail as Emperor in the wake of Emperor Cyril Alexi's death at the hands of Loyalist extremists.
Although the Homefront rebel faction was supported by much of Judec's working class and disaffected military, many Loyalist forces remain across the Empire. With mixed reports of civil disturbances, peaceful protests, and violence erupting across the cities of Marzantium, Eskelgrad, and the Imperial Capital Constantine, the Imperial Army (much of which was formerly the rebel forces) find themselves in the ironic position of being on the other side of the same table they sat at just months ago.
Among the most egregious of rumors floating around the Empire are the whispers that Duke Mikhail's ascension is in fact illegitimate, and the former Emperor Cyril was actually murdered by rebel forces, looking to boost the Homefront sympathetic Duke Mikhail onto the Imperial throne.
As tensions with the Alliance rise, it remains to be seen how these developments will impact future events in the continent.'

Hey guys: So...how do I Tumblr? (and other stuff)

Game developers ahead of the curve know that when it comes to getting your game out there, known, and for people to follow and eventually play it, social media is where its at. I'm big into effective marketing of cool stuff, so my game already has a Twitter and a Tumblr.
I feel pretty confident in my Twitter foothold so far, but how do I Tumblr? Many game developers are doing very well on Tumblr, but I'm finding it hard to get a foothold on my numbers in terms of interaction and activity. To those who are deep in the Tumblrsphere, do you guys have any advice?
General advice for all social media outreach is appreciated as well!
