Plot Overview

In the world of Linguardia, the nations of Rikalia and Dorent are the reigning powers. Although both leaders have been at peace for centuries, a dark cloud is on the horizon. King Richard, leader of the Rikalian Empire, has recently lost his wife and daughter to a pack of demons. Now, his mind twisted from grief, Richard is on a quest for domination. His plan: to harness the power of the six legendary crystals, which, according to scriptures, will bestow the wielder with unimaginable powers if brought together. With Richard on a path of destruction to collect the crystals, war seems inevitable.

Players take control of Epoch Lander, Captain of Richard's Dragon Knights, an elite force within the Rikalian Empire. However, when Epoch begins questioning the morals behind Richard's actions, he is arrested for treason and sentenced to death. With his head full of unanswered questions, Epoch must decide whether to accept his fate or fight for what he believes to be the greater good: even if it means fighting alone.

Soundtrack Complete!

Jose has just finished the last two songs of the soundtrack, bringing the OST to a grand total of 36 songs. With those final two, the Forever's End soundtrack is now complete! I really have to thank Jose for all the hard work he put into these songs. They all sound fantastic, and I can't wait to release the next episode with them implemented. Great job, bro!

Do know though, there are a few songs that will be included with the game that aren't custom. Not many, but a few, mainly because some of my cutscenes were already built around these songs. However, all of the ones included on this gamepage are the custom ones composed by Jose.

With the soundtrack complete, I thought I'd list out a few of my personal favorites. If you have any favorites, please comment and show Jose some love.

Traveling - Overworld Theme

The Reprieve

Dangerous Wilderness

The Death Knight - Marcellus' Theme

Spiritualization

Journeying Forward

Cutting a Path

In the Heat of Battle - Boss Theme 2

I have the same problem. :x It's the same way on both my desktop and laptop.

Not really sure what this would be. Is it everywhere or just in dungeons?

It lagged horribly for me too, everywhere, not just in dungeons. :\
I opened it up in the editor and play-tested from there and it wasn't laggy.

I played this awhile back and while I find Nicob's efforts admirable. I also agree with what Craze and some others have said.

I felt that at it's core the problem with Forever's End is that, at it's best, it seems to be a refreshing, modern take on Final Fantasy 4.

At it's worst it seems to tread all too familiar ground, neither advancing nor challenging what has come before it, while adding useless characters and a battle system I personally couldn't careless for.

The time and the amount of effort NicoB has put into this project clearly shows but I just kind of wish it was spent on something a little more worthwhile.

I wonder while he's heading towards these personal deadlines, if he ever asks himself why he's spending so much time on this project. Is it because he is seeking a personal sense of recognition for his efforts or is it because he has this overwhelming, all encompassing passion for a game that he, himself, has always wanted to play.

If it's the latter, then it's just a matter of opinion and personal preference; I would've kept the battle system very simple and just focused solely on Epoch, Marcellus and King Richard because that's where the strength of his story is, something I personally wished to see more of if it were my game.

Nevertheless though, your audience will always be able to tell whether it's there or not, that love.

I understand what many people are saying about the beginning resembling FF IV; believe or not, it was never intentional. FF IV was never my initial inspiration. However, as the story progresses, it truly deviates from FF IV's story and becomes more its own.

I don't understand why you'd consider some of my characters "useless." Each one serves its own purpose and had his own special connection to the inner weavings of the narrative. They're not there for fluff or just to have another party member. I put a lot of effort into the battle system, and I'd be curious as to why you don't like it. I tried a simple battle system in the past, but most people thought it was dull and boring.

I make games because I love making games. That's it. I like telling stories and I like constructing my own twists on battles and gameplay. I mean, why do any of us make games? I've continued this project because the past releases have all been received, for the most part, very well. People wanted to see me finish it. That's enough reason for me.

Realize, I told this story the way I did because that's how I wanted to tell it. I actually do like my own story, despite many of your complaints. I've tried fixing parts of it to better suit my audience (I did actually decrease the number of monologues), but eventually there's got to be a point where I say, "This is good enough. Time to move on." Otherwise, the game will never get finished.

I'm wondering, which version of the game did you play? Did you play through the entire thing?

Huh, that's weird...I'm sorry about this. I guess I'll have to decrease the number of events on the map at the same time, but I really didn't think there were that many. I wonder why it would work better in test play?
Nicob has a list of the spots where I lagged, and it's probably where everyone else is going to lag too. It does get better a little bit later in the game, but then lags again the highroad. I think the highroad lag is entertwined somehow with the patrolling monsters, cause once I killed them it stopped. Anyways, hes working on fixing it, as well as all of the bugs I've given him.

Well anyways, nicob has plenty of negative feedback to work with now, so try to encourage him with some positive. In the end, hes doing what he enjoys, and although not everyone has the same tastes in game, we can at least give him that much right?

For anyone who has been bug hunting in the current version, feel free to pm them, it's always a possibility I've missed one or two.

Edit: What am I...delusionall? I just went and posted the wrong name on every account. Sorry about that, I'm usually more focused than this.

In all fairness, she did do a lot of work for this game, and I think it helped bolster the game's exposure bigtime. But if she offered to do it for free, then there's really no grudge to be had here. Tricky situation!
She offered to do it for free; then I offered to pay her, and she refused, even after I insisted. If she decides she wants me to pay her, I'm all for it. She's done a fabulous job and is an extremely talented artist. I feel privileged to have her help.
Thanks for the clarification :)

why is this anyone's business
First post.

I haven't played this yet, but I did notice while I was unpacking the zip that the readme was compressed to 1337kb. Sounds like a winner to me already.

I understand it was never intentional and it's unfair to make that comparison. What I was trying to say in the nicest way is that it's good to see someone approach "the upheaval of a corrupt king" in a unique and interesting way. If nothing else, I feel that this is what Forever's End does extremely well.

In any case, It was a much earlier version, so my memory is hazy.

But from what I can remember, I liked the game up until I got up to the part with Lee Durandan and Goldo.

If I remember correctly, I felt that Epoch and Elise weren't even that well established yet. You hadn't really given your audience a reason to care about these characters because the characters themselves hadn't established a desire that would motivate them/create conflict. All they did was ally themselves towards a common goal; stop King Richard/ Marcellus which in itself is boring.

e.g.
(I know you already know this, but I just want to throw this example out there:

In FF4 the only way Prince Edward was able to relate to Cecil was through his desire to save Rosa. In just two lines, Prince Edward state's his own personal reason for joining Cecil and his desire to help him on his quest.

"This woman you speak of…she means a great deal to you, doesn't she?"
"As Anna did…As Anna did to me."

That's all you need; make it personal.)

All we know at that point is that a bunch of stuff has happened. That sequence in the past was excellent but Epoch and Elise themselves hadn't really grown, changed or reacted to their situations, like good, well developed characters do (again, my memory's hazy).

But just as soon as Epoch and Elisa were starting to sound even remotely interesting, the game suddenly shifts to this new character, Lee Durandan. Now, I can understand Lee Durandan. His father was murdered, his village was burned, he's the son of a renowned war hero, that's compelling. There's something to write about there, something interesting.

But I can't understand Goldo. Goldo feels like a relic from the 1990s. There's nothing interesting about him and he just detracts from the story.

It's at this point where the game jumps back and forth between these two parties. Once the story finally sets it's focus back on Epoch and this mysterious hooded figure who obliterates an entire army, I just didn't care: You have too many characters, all trying to hog the spotlight at the same time. Neither of them is very compelling nor more interesting than the other because regardless of everything that's happened to them, none of them has changed. Again, it's been awhile since I've played Forever's End up to that part and I'm probably making a gross assumption. But I just remembered this bugging me a lot.

As for the battle system, I guess maybe it's just the nature of rpgmaker 2003 which isn't something that can really be helped. I felt it was cumbersome having to wade through all the menus. (I had the same problem with Phantom Legacy; i.e. you have three skill sets to choose from, sword skills, magic skills, "Focus", "Charge", "Scan" as well as items that also incorporate these commands. The battle menu most of the time will only show two or three of these commands. Eventually you forget what each one does, why they're actually there and accidentally select them. Rm2k3 doesn't seem to accommodate this very well in general though. But, you have put a lot of thought into making these battles interesting which is admirable.

Anyways, I had a save file outside of Namu Pass with Lee and Goldo and the game at that point literally felt like an absolute chore to play through. I just couldn't get passed it. Now unless you've implemented something new at that point in the game, I just don't feel very compelled to play through it again. Obviously you've updated it since then of course. But that point in the game in particular, I felt there needed to be something new. I guess I'll probably have to play through it again.

As I mentioned before it's probably just a personal preference. But I do admire the amount of effort you've put into this project as it's definitely one of the better rpgmaker games I've played.

Guess Lee needed a partner, he's still a kid after all. Not going to survive long enough on his own out there. Also, seeing as Epoch and his men invaded the village, and hurt his father and all, even so Elisa would still want revenge or something, Epoch forever alone. lol. I DON'T KNOW WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT.

Yeah! Ttaking your time and making sure you're doing the right thing is so fucking overrated! So is remembering something for more than one play session! Who would want to take their time and remember things? That's just a stupid waste of time! Everything should be ridiculously obvious. In fact, the battle system should tell me what to do! Seroiously, why can't all battles be a case of smashing the space-bar over and over!?

/sarcasm

A good concise interface is important, which is exactly why I already fixed the problems previously cited in my own game.

it's truly unfortunate that we're not all super geniuses like yourself who can remember everything about everything at all times.

putting in a little description for commands isn't difficult and it's always helpful. you make it sound like any description or clarity would be the end of the world as we know it

Ghost, that would be a pretty valid, postable Review. Unless you're of the school of thought that you need to play a game to the end, but "I can't get much further into this game" with that much explication is considerable.

I also like how you called Craze out and then agreed that it was pretty terrible. But I understand your point and agree with it - you can give negative feedback without talking down.

F-G, perhaps puking up frothing vitriolic sarcastic spittle on someone else's game page is not the best way to handle what you view as stupidity. Allow me to demonstrate how a human being can be an asshole but behave still better than you

I felt it was cumbersome having to wade through all the menus.

I didn't really have a problem with it. I can't possibly imagine how the menu interface could be more concise, so maybe it's just you

the whole battle system argument being hard to remember or understand is pretty ridiculous though, unless you're going out of your way to not pay attention.

well...i thought the game was great :). i think to some extent many of the developers on here are pure perfectionists and overly critical of games that have been given recognition. it seems like no-one is really happy with it despite it being an improved version of the demo which received mostly positive feedback, which seems strange? to some extent i can agree with some criticism's but i think that it's being exaggerated a lot.
Guys, cool the rhetoric. Now.
