NHL 2016 Stanley Cup Playoffs / Pool Prediction Thread

The long, excruciating 82 game NHL regular season has finally come to a end for most teams, and thus the start of a brand new type of hockey season is about to begin for the 16 remaining: The Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Who’s it gonna be this year?

Will the Chicago Blackhawks reign supreme yet again and win their 4th coveted Stanley Cup in the last 6 years? Will the Los Angeles Kings manage to get back to the promise land again after missing out on the playoffs from last year? Can the Washington Capitals, and Alexander Ovechkin, FINALLY get over that collective curse that is the 2nd round and make it all the way to the finals after winning the President’s Trophy? Or will some of the new, up-and-coming teams, such as the Dallas Stars and the Florida Panthers be the ones to surprise everybody this year? Or maybe one of the long time underachievers, like the San Jose Sharks, Minnesota Wild or St. Louis Blues might finally be able do it?

Once again, just like with last year’s thread, we’re going to not only disucss and react to all of the Stanley Cup Playoff’s that are going on here but we’re also going to hold a playoff prediction pool where the winner will receive an achievement badge for coming out on top!

- So what are you waiting for? Get your asses in here and show everybody that you know what you’re doing when it comes to hockey, unlike the rest of the Canadian teams that didn’t make it. :(

The Bracket:

The Rules:
The rules of the game are simple: you must pick the winner of each playoff series, from round one all the way to the Stanley Cup Finals and how many games each series will go on to and who you think will ultimately win the Stanley Cup.

For each correct guess that you make you’ll receive 2 points. If you manage to successfully predict how many games that particular series will go to you’ll earn a bonus point, even if that team that you pick in that series ends up ultimately losing. And if you not only manage to pick the winner of that series and the correct number of games that it will go on to you can earn up to 4 points for both, so try to get ‘em both right.

And also - be very, very wary on who you decide to pick to win the Stanley Cup this year, as any playoff series that team is particularly involved in will earn you double the points for their efforts. So if you’re picking the Washington Capitals, for example, to win the Stanley Cup and they beat the Flyers in 6 and you both get the team and the correct number of games right you’ll earn up to 8 points for that particular round!

The Prize:

This year, for the participant(s) that earns the most points at the end of the playoffs they will earn this lovely Conn Smythe achievement award that’s worth 5 whole makerscore points and a token of my gratitude, the best kind of gratitude there is! :D

Unfortunately, like most of teams participating in this thing, the losers get nothing. NOTHING!

As An Adult, Do You Find Yourself Playing More Video Games At This Age Or Less?

“…What the f**k am I even doing here…?”

So I’m a bit curious to ask this, considering my age and all – but how many of you guys, who are now in your adult years, basically twenty years older or up, still manage to play around the same amount of hours of video games that you used to play as a kid – or has it always been around the same or even more?

I ask of this because I’m a bit curious if my low level of interest in playing a lot of video games lately is just part of the eventual growing up phase and being a more responsible adult now and it’s just a natural thing that happens to us when we get older – or maybe it’s something more, like my interests and hobbies have changed a lot since then, or maybe something else? I’m kind of curious, actually.

I mean, it’s not that I hate gaming today or hate what it’s become, or anything like that, as I still like to play the odd game here or two whenever I can for around an hour or so, but it just seems like I’m playing less and less the more that times goes by, especially in regards to newer games. Older games I still play lots of, of course, but not as much newer games.

Conker Is Back In Young Conker For The Microsoft HoloLens - And People Are Pi*sed!!!

Why gamers aren’t happy with HoloLens platformer Young Conker
Remember Conker’s Bad Fur Day? If so, you’re definitely not the only one. Conker’s Bad Fur Day was considered by many to be the last great game made by Rare, a studio that’s largely considered the most storied and talented studio in video game history, launching titles such as Donkey Kong Country, Banjo Kazooie, and Goldeneye 007. Featuring largely crude humor, the game used its corny, raunchy style along with truly genius gameplay mechanics to create something that could really stand out in the eyes of the people who had grown up with Rare for so many years, and reveled in their unique style.

When Microsoft acquired Rare, it was pretty heartbreaking for a great many people. Suddenly, a studio that had mastered the art of video games was making things like Grabbed by the Ghoulies and Banjo Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts, which are thought by many to be extremely disappointing when compared to the studio’s history when they worked free of another company’s leash. After a few missteps, however, it seemed like people were willing to let it go – Microsoft stopped making Rare twist around its loved IP’s, and the fans decided to cool down. Microsoft even released the Rare vault in the form of the Rare Replay, an incredible bundle of 30 of everyone’s favorite Rare games that tickled everyone’s nostalgia, and made gamers believe that Microsoft had gotten the message to stop trying to dig into Rare’s franchises.

With the recent announcement of a few new games coming out for HoloLens, this trust between Microsoft and the community was broken. Enter Young Conker – a game that, while possibly having the best intentions behind it, has sparked a whole lot of distrust and anger in the gaming community.

The game is going to be a HoloLens platformer, and one that actually looks like it could be pretty fun – a good proof of concept for the cool gaming experiences that augmented reality can bring us. The controversy here lies in the fact that Microsoft dragged a resting IP out of its grave to be the mascot of the game, and in so doing not only created a seemingly unfaithful recreation of the original Conker, but also missed the personality that made Conker’s Bad Fur Day such a memorable game.

As mentioned before, Conker’s Bad Fur Day was a game whose personality revolved around crude humor – that includes sexual humor, vulgarity, toilet humor, and even some stuff that’s just outright offensive. It’s a game that was totally unafraid to have no shame and no standards, and it’s that personality that made it a bit of an endearing gem among its peers. From all indications, it looks like Microsoft is making a game that features none of Conker’s personality, and instead offers some relatively generic platformer effects.

Suffice it to say, people aren’t happy with what Microsoft has done to one of gaming’s most beloved mascots, and that’s demonstrated quite clearly with the Young Conker YouTube video’s like bar – 19,000 dislikes to 2,000 likes. It’s highly unlikely that Microsoft will do anything about this backlash, but even if they do, the move is a big hit to their goodwill with Rare fans. Hopefully, Microsoft decides that they want to take this in a different direction – or at least try and release the game without giving it too much more attention.

Jesus, what the f**k did they do to him…

And I’m amazed that those guys in the video are so extremely proud of themselves and all happy like “hey, this is a great idea” and “nothing could possibly go wrong with something like this! This is what you all wanted, right, a next-generation Conker game? Did we do good?”

My god… It’s like this is all just a big joke to them and they just love getting off now on all of the negative reactions of everybody about this shit. Well – I can’t blame ‘em! I would too!

I mean, all we want is just another game in the series, just like the last Conker’s Bad Fur Day, and that’s all we want - that’s it...! It’s not f**king rocket science; this sort of shit should be easy! Yeah, you don’t have the same members of the original team any more, and I can understand that – but anything is better than this!!!

People…we’ve just witness the end of the another gaming icon... May he finally rest in peace…

Jesus…

RMN Trade Deadline Day Game - Who Stays, Who Goes?

SUMMARY:
“Uh oh! It looks like General Manager Kentona’s got his work cut out for him this year! :O

With the impending RMN Trade Deadline day fast approaching him in a few days time, Kentona’s got some pretty hefty shoes to fill in regards to what he wants to do going forward in shaping his team for the years to come – but he’s gotta be careful! Not trading someone away whose value is currently high and expendable could hurt him in the long run of things and not trading various limping assets, who mostly just sit on the bench all day long and cost him valuable makerscore salary could spell disastrous for him. What is he to do?”

RULES:
  • You must pick five RMNers from here to keep around for the rest of the year and give a reason or two on why they should stay.

  • Then list five other RMNers that you wish to be traded away and give a reason or two why, whether it be lack of performance, makerscore salary, or whatever the case may be. Choose wisely.

  • All in all, this is just for fun. Don’t take it too seriously, okay?

KEEP: Unity
WHY: I kind of consider her the future Liberty replacement if she ever decides to step down someday. Not only does she have a boatload of many different games on here and has currently two games featured on this site thus far but she is also very friendly, participates in a lot of events and discussions and overall is a B prospect that has suddenly turned into a A one. She’s also great all around with all the newbies coming on board, too. Trading unity now would definitely fetch us a hefty return, indeed, but I rather trade someone else.

KEEP: Archeia_Nessiah
WHY: The wily old veteran who still manages to produce on a nightly basis. Nessy may not post as much or participate in as many events as she once did before, but she’s still a valuable asset to this team - and we can’t trade her now, even with her large looming salary and signing bonus. She’s still one of the best artists around here, and that’s an asset worth keeping.

KEEP: Solitayre
WHY: Things were looking a little bleak there for the guy a couple of months ago with his recent slip in production, but lately Soli seems to be like he’s back on track in the reviewing side of things and has managed to rocket back up the standings again into a keeper status, especially with nhubi mysteriously disappearing; somebody needs a reviewing hero on board, and it looks like we already have one... Besides, only he has the mental capacity to go through all those reviews in the queue and not go insane.

KEEP: Badluck
WHY: Not only is he cheap to keep around at only 1.039 makerscore a season, but the man seems to have come back from the minors recently and is playing like a real pro again. With Ara Fell almost completed very soon, which I’m sure is going to do really, really good, Badluck might be interested in doing other projects again, which benefits us more by keeping him around. Besides, he’s a legend. You don’t trade legends.

KEEP: Kylaila
WHY: I’d keep her around mainly because of her friendly demeanour, wiliness to participate and is a great success story as another yet prospect, similar to unity, that has done very well in the Kentona system. Her makerscore salary is expensive, for sure, but maybe this is something to look to do for next season's deadline instead of this one.

TRADE: Deckiller
WHY: Why is he still playing on this team again? With making over a grand whopping total of over 17.7 makerscore a season, which is the HIGHEST out of everyone here on the site here besides the GM, it’s time for Deckiller to go, play a few more games for RPG Maker Web and retire from the sport with dignity. Besides, he can always come back next season in an assistances role.

TRADE: calunio
WHY: I’m not sure what's happened to calunio over the last couple of months, but I think it may be time to finally trade the Brazilian... He still got some merit behind him because of his past games and his overall experience, but we may only get two boxes of half eaten donuts out of it for him in the end, which I guess is still better than one.

TRADE: Puddor
WHY: Our little Final Fantasy fangirl hasn’t done that much lately on the RMN front of things, and it may be time for her to go. Her makerscore salary is attractive enough at 4.0, so that might attract a couple of suitors. Besides, she’s got some experience regarding using RPG Maker XP and VX Ace, so that’s a positive.

TRADE: Max McGee
WHY: Sorry, Maxy, but you just haven’t been a big draw in the last little while around here - and I'm not sure why... His game making skills have dried up a little bit recently and he doesn’t post as much as he did before, but he’s still a valuable experienced veteran that can probably get us something in the end. His most recent baggage might hurt trading him though, along with his expensive makerscore salary.

TRADE: WIP
WHY: I know that WIP is one of the founding fathers and all and still holds a bit of a presence around here, but that 11.3 makerscore contact a season is just hurting us way too much. Besides, he’s been on the long term injury list for years, now! It’s time to part ways with this fleeting legend.

What Are Some Of Your Favorite Puzzle Games That You Often Like To Play?

Damn blocks.

So the last couple of weeks lately I’ve been finding myself playing a bunch of old puzzle games to not only help kickstart the ol’ brain here but to also give myself a bit of a break away from working on my own projects for once and writing reviews for other people around here. (I’m sorry...)

And it made me think: what are some of your favorite puzzle games that you often like to play, RMN?

Now, you don’t necessarily have to be a master or insanely good to put a puzzle game on your list - no, no, just something that you like to personally bust out every once and a while and just have a good ol’ fashion time.

For me, I’d put:

Tetris
- Of course Tetris is gonna be on the list! It was the very first puzzle game that I’ve ever played back on the original Gameboy, and it’s still a favorite of mine ever since… You just can’t enough of those falling blocks and putting them all into rows and trying not to screw up, especially in V.S. mode or when the falling speed starts to get faster. I’m alright in V.S. mode depending on what type of settings we’re playing on and the particular version that we’re playing, but I still enjoy playing the game, either way.

Panel De Pon / Tetris Attack (2D Version)
Oh, I like playing this, especially on the Super Nintendo. Panel De Pon (or Tetris Attack, or whatever its called) felt more like an action game to me more than a puzzle game. Things can definitely get really hectic really quickly, especially on the harder difficulties and against the CPU - and it’s just so much damn fun! The only real downside is that if you’re playing against somebody really, really, really good in V.S. mode that the matches can last well over a half an hour sometimes, which is the ultimate test of endurance. I also don’t particular like the 3D versions of the game, myself – but whatever. Panel De Pon is still the shit!

Dr. Mario
Ah, this game… I used to be pretty bad at it as a kid, but it’s kind of grown on me after a while. Dr. Mario is definitely more fun to me more as a single player sort of game more than a multiplayer one, but either way the game is still loads of fun. Clearing all those viruses as fast as you can without screwing up your pill placements, especially when you have to clear almost half the bottle full of these f*cking b*tards, is definitely a worthwhile challenge, indeed. And the music… Oh my god – the music!

Bust-A-Move
I used to play this game a lot as a kid back then in the arcades and remember enjoying it quite a lot. At the time I’d usually just wait for some other poor sap to start playing the game or just join in - and totally waste their asses (and also all of their quarters, lol). It was a lot of fun! Bust-A-Move just didn’t feel like a traditional puzzler at all at the time. Instead of falling blocks and falling pills, you basically shoot bubbles from the bottom of the screen towards the top of it. (What the f**k type of madness is this!?) The game was so simple and so much fun that even my little brother enjoyed playing this alongside me once in a while - and he hates puzzle games.

Those are usually the ones that I like to play the most, but I’m pretty much fond of all them.

- So which ones do you guys like to play?

RMN New Year’s Resolutions 2016 (And A Lookback At Last Year’s Successes And Epic Failures)

First and foremost – happy new year to everyone that’s celebrating all over the world and congratulations on staying alive for yet, another glorious year. (Yaaaay!!!)

So some of you might remember last year that I made a similar topic to this one in regards to personal goals that some people wanted to strive and set towards here on RMN. It was a pretty good measuring stick for the year ahead and provided some clarity about what each member who posted over there was planning on doing that year.

Well, now that year has (almost) come to an end and a brand new one begins and it’s once again time to not only look back to see if a lot of what you had to shoot for was achieved or not but what you’re planning on doing over here in 2016, the year of the red munkeyh. :P

Sooo – let’s see how I managed to fare, shall we?

I’m hoping to finally submit a particular game that I’ve been fixing for a while that I think you guys might know what it is *wink* *wink*

Nope, still not up yet. But, hey, at least some notable progress was made on it throughout the year and it’s getting pretty close to coming back.

and Brian Okam’s Free Throw Challenge

F**k.

I also would love to get to the 50 review mark.

Smashed that one and even more. :)

try to get into the 5k makerscore mark

Yup, I’m there!

do some more articles

I did three, so that’s not bad.

and maybe even write a tutorial or two on something 2k3 related.

Well, shit.

So I guess other than the game related promises and the tutorial related one, I’d say I did pretty good on my promises.

- All right, 2016:

Monopoly / Monopolo:
It should definitely be completed this year. I’ve been working on it pretty regularly over the last couple of months, and progress has definitely picked up quite a bit recently thanks in large part to the influx of new house rules and such. This game has definitely caused me my fair share of headaches and grief over the last two years or so trying to fix the bloody thing up, but it looks like 2016 it will alllll be worth it in the end…

Brian Okam’s Free Throw Challenge:
Well, this is definitely going to get worked on again once Monopoly / Monopolo finishes up. I’ve been “kind of” working on it a bit on the side whenever I have the opportunity to do so, but not as much as I would like it to be... I’m not sure if this is going to be done next year, but having a gamepage up for it would be nice.

60+ Reviews?
I don’t think I’ll be reviewing as many games as I’ve done prior in the past, but I definitely would like to get to the 60+ mark next year.

7000+ Makerscore?
Yeah – why not? Monopolo should give me some much needed pointage when everything gets posted up – and I’m sure I’ll enter another event or two and get some more achieveos from that, so we’ll see.

Anything Else?
Yeah, more achieveos, lol.

Okay, here’s another pretty bold prediction from me, and I know you guys are going to laugh your asses off when you hear this – but get this: Monopolo WILL get…a featured spot... I don’t know in what exactly, but it will…and it will be glorious…

…Other than that, same ol’ same ol’, I guess.

- Alright, everyone, it’s time to put up or shut up. Let’s see those resolutions…

So What'Chu Guys Get For Christmas This Year?

Christmas is all about the presents, I think…

- So, another Christmas has just recently passed and I’m wondering what sort of “gifts” you guys got from all your friends, family, co-workers or secret admirers this year. Did you manage to get everything that you wanted on your list, or was it just another year of getting nothing but five dollars in scratch-n-win tickets and a pair of lush white socks. (I just love that gift.)

Let’s see…I got…

  • A box of liquor chocolates
  • A fifty dollar bill
  • Axe body wash
  • Axe deodorant stick
  • Five dollars in scratch-n-win tickets
  • A mandarin orange
  • Some more candy
  • And a toonie
  • Oh, and tickets to go see the new Star Wars movie tomorrow (NO SPOILERS!!!)

So, yeah, pretty good Christmas this year. No new games or anything like that – but whatevers!

- So what’chu guys get?

(It's socks, isn't it? Lol.)

[Poll] Why You No Nominate For 2015 Misaos Yet, RMN?

2015 currently has 324 total nominations!

“Mother of god…”

So I just finished nominating all of my Misao picks thus far for this year and have just discovered that not a lot of you people have been voting as regularly as you should be (shame).

With only 324 nominations casted thus far, and getting pretty close to the start of November, it’s somewhat alarming that we have so very few nominations this year compared to other years.

I know that these numbers will pick up quite a bit as we get closer to the end of the year and all, but at this continued pace this year could be one of the lowest turnouts for the Misaos since two-thousand-freakin’-nine. (And I remember that year quite well, mind you. *sob, sob*)

- So why is this currently a thing? Is it because there aren’t as many good or notable games out there to vote for this year compared to other years? Is it because this year has a different category setup with a lot more choices than before? Is it because a lot of you haven’t had much of an opportunity to play a lot of games this year – or do we blame it all on a possible scapegoat this time around, like the recent release of RPG Maker MV or that blasted Gender and Race topic? (Damn that topic!!!)

Or maybe the whole Misao thing isn’t as much of a draw any more as it used to be…and I can firmly understand why, as a lot of the past winners in the past have been subjected to more question more than a “oh yeah, that game is awesome and stuff and I’m glad that it won” sort of reaction.

Hopefully things will start to pick up soon... I just thought that I would bring some attention to it, that's all.

So How Many Nintendo 64 Games Do You Own?

(Remember this thing? Good times...)

So I was recently going through my old stash (...no, no not that type of stash, lol) of old Nintendo 64 games – and it got me a'thinkin'…of eating a giant sandwich! :D

(No, no, that’s not it…)

No, what I meant to say is that it got me thinking about all of the Nintendo 64 games that I own and played all those wonderful years ago and wondered what everyone else had for their beloved giant black / etc. colored brick with that giant ass controller. (Seriously, that thing is hugggeee!)

Soooooo...pretty much self-explanatory here, expect that you need to least own a physical cartridge of the game or have purchased it elsewhere, like on the Wii or Wii U's Virtual Console.

What’s Your All-Time Favorite Chocolate Bar?

Considering that they’re putting up all the Halloween candy rather early in the stores every single blasted year.

- So we all like eating mounds and mounds of delicious, delicious sweet chocolate, right? (Don’t you lie.) Of course you do! (Otherwise why would you even click on this thread in the first place, you health nut.)

Chocolate is not only satisfyingly yummy in the tummy but it also gives you that intensive “sugar rush,” or “sugar high,” that’s often needed to wake yourself up from that slight depression of yours in life or get those creative juices flowing for what seemingly only feels like only just a mere second. And when there are no energy drinks or high stacks of pots of coffee around nearby to do the trick - chocolate is often your only salvation.

So with all the seemingly huge and endless supply of many different chocolate bars out there, both inexpensive and cheap, that are sitting on the shelf melting away in the hot, hot sticky sun – which one of them is your all-time favorite? And if you used to eat chocolate bars before you had to cut them down for some unknown reason (you poor, poor ba*tard, you…), which one of them did you used to eat the most beforehand? (You know...when you used to be cool...)

I’ve had many different favorite chocolate bars over the years myself, but the all-time classic for me will always be a “Coffee Crisp.” I always liked the taste of it and the vanilla flavored wavers were always really good. I always get reminded of the good ol’ days whenever I eat one of those.

- So what's yours?
