Culture of crass, apathy and cynicism
post=130238Excerpt from a PM I JUST received from a user, which in turn was an excerpt from a comment he wanted to make on one of my game's reviews but felt reticent to, due to an understandable fear of entering a flamewar and the feeling that he wasn't going to change anyone's minds anyway.I don't particularly find that bit of out of context information relevant to anything, unless you're suggesting that some reviews are created with the express purpose of stomping on someone's dreams instead of providing any kind of meaningful feedback to creator or player.
I just think it's fascinating and definitely seems relevant to this topic.
I think it's relevant to what has been discussed about being "crass" in this topic, although, this topic has spread out all over the place.

I find that interesting too and as I said, I disagree with it. I typically do not pull punches when criticizing. A good life lesson to learn is that if you want to present something to the public, you have to be able to take a criticism. This does not only apply to gamedesign. It applies to art, music, theatre, film, in fact, it fits in with EVERYTHING that is presented. If you can't take this FACT, don't present work you make to the public. It's that simple. The "negative" touch helps bluntness. There are many people who simply do not listen to criticism until you shove it in their face... and also it can add a bit of entertainment and humor to a potentially otherwise dry review. (ALTHOUGH there is a difference between negative criticism and a personal attack)
And, even though "relative internet anonymity" exists across forums and sites such as RMN, that is an ignorant thing to say. Just as I mentioned before, presenting games on RMN is a small fragment of things that people present, and all of them can and do receive the same criticism, much without this... "barrier of anonymity." The smart thing to do is to take the criticism they offer and learn to improve. This is how people get better at things. You never "master" a skill learning by yourself, you improve and get experienced as people point out your flaws and you adapt yourself to fix your mistakes.
I honestly could talk about this for like a page and write a long post, but I'll leave it at that for now.

I may or may not have said that in the past, I don't recall, but I can play them now and I do. As I said, what I said wasn't meant to say that these games were bad, but simply not on my own "favorites" list. I've played them all except Master of the Wind... which I really have no intention of playing. Just as you chose your games for those reasons, I would choose games for different reasons. Especially because most of this list veers towards "traditional RPG," and while I do enjoy a good traditional RPG, I tend to popular my favorites lists with a variety of genres.
I'm leaving...
We didn't say it isn't right, it's just odd since most people are in their late teens or 20s around here, I think.

I didn't best a "best of 2009" list, I said "my best of 2009" (although I had my outside the quotes) meaning a personal list... which is what I assumed "favorite games of 2009" meant.

Yeah this is pretty bizarre. 8 year-olds shouldn't be writing and reading long internet posts, they should be learning long division. That stuff is for procrastinating 17 year-olds like me.

Chaos, why do you assume that? Just because I put graphical effort into my games doesn't mean I really care about it. My favorite RM games have ugly graphics (Three the Hard Way, Pangaea Chronicles, Jay's Journey.)
I would've included catmitt's games, and probably Desert Nightmare. (I don't mean that to toot my own horn, I translated it but it's NOT MY GAME.) And Ascendence too. Oh, and I'd probably point at Paraise Blue as well. And Pirates: The Legend of the Silver Crescent.
I was exaggering though, I do like some of the games up there other than Dhux's Scar, but Dhux's Scar is the only I'd put on my "best of 2009" list, except for maybe Hero's Realm. I don't really care for Starless Umbra. That game just felt like shoving in as many custom systems as possible for the sake of having custom systems.
