So how about that health care reform?

I agree with most of the list, with the sole exception of Dhux's Scar. I found the game extremely juvenile and the humor felt very forced.
Hah, on my end, Dhux's Scar is probably the only one I agree with.

...
I make games when I'm bored.
If I wanna be artistic I'll go play my guitar or write my novel.
The way this discussion has drifted is pretty laughable.
This is the most irrelevant post in this topic.
Also yes, I have to agree with Legion there.
So how about that health care reform?

Why not make the game and then we can try to label it afterwards?
I like this idea.
Also, your avatar + text underneath it are perfect together.

The idea that an RPG is just "a story" is a nonsense. RPGs are a specific genre of games that contain a fairly consistent set of features. That is what a genre is, after all, a consistent set of features, and battles are one of those "consistent" features. If you move away from those features then you are moving into a different genre or you are mixing two genres together: take away battles and you no longer have an RPG.
I heavily disagree with this and I think this is close-minded because focusing on keeping these "consistent" features is something that can prevent innovation and new formulas.. The term "role-playing" game itself implies that the story and setting are most important. (Wikipedia thinks so too.) In a role-playing game, you PLAY A ROLE within the setting of a world. Determining actions within this world however, is based on numbers, which is really what sets RPGs apart--their basis on numbers.
To me, that is what defines RPGs as RPGs and sets them apart.
Many COMMON aspects of RPGs are exploration, sidequests, inventories, equipment/abilities/experience/leveling/etc., and combat.

Also the game was very good, it just happens to be that some people didn't think so, you are over exadurating by saying "maybe i can find people with no standards to praise my decidedly poor craftsmanship and inexperience!", because to me this game was brilliant and i asked a few people who where fans of Final Fantasy if they thought it was ok, they said the making and desighn of it was poor but the story line and the game play made up for it.
So before you start accusing people of not putting any effort into somthing, think and conciter there side of the story, im alot younger than you are too so i haven't had as much life expiriance.
I tried my hardest and you have no right to say that i didn't without any evidence, paying sombody out who is as you would say a Frackin kid, isn't how i would expect sombody who is adult to act.
By the way i did it on XP not VX.
Looking at your grammar/spelling it is hard to say that your writing would be exceptional. I highly doubt anyone "new" would be able to create a masterful work of storytelling if they're inexperienced, especially if they're young. You really only get good at things like that (among other skills) from sticking around for a while and putting in effort.
And your friends saying it good is fairly meaningless. It is nice to have their support, but they are your friends after all, and are likely to support you... combined with the fact that they probably haven't seen this sort of stuff before. Something sort of "new" like this can amaze people, like, for example... One time my friend wanted to use RM2K3 for school project, and he basically asked me to make it. I put together the WORST THING I have ever made, with bad mapping, shitty graphics, horrid writing, etc. etc. However his teacher loved it and gave him an A on the project because why? She was impressed because she had never seen anything really game design related. If your friends never had any experience with game design or the like, that's a big reason for them being impressed. They have not yet experienced enough to mentally create a "quality control" so whether or not your work is bad, they'll probably think it's great. Like, "lol dude thats so badass u can make your own games!!!!!11"
And really, most of this community does not have a crazy high standard.
Also, age is not really an excuse for making lower quality work or flaking out. It can equate to inexperience but even the young can excel if they put effort. (I've been using RM since I was 9. Now I'm 17.) When I was 13 or so, I created a bunch of stuff in Rm2k3 that impressed a variety of much older members and many of them commented on my age. (although I would probably never use 2k3 for such things again.) Even though I was young, I had the drive to create something I thought was unique and cool, and putting in the effort for it was what made it presentable.

Everybody chill out.
We all have different stances on how we make our games, how serious we are, and whatnot. Each stance leads to a different point of view. While I do not agree with you guys, I respect what you have to say, but this isn't getting us anywhere.
Also, yes, I agree with EnderX. Indie and amateur relate to different things. I'd say Indie basically means making games without being funded by a video game publisher. I dunno what the opposing word would be. Mainstream? >_>
Then there's amateur vs. professional, which I take to mean having some degree of training on game design.
So I think you can be Indie and amateur.
