How important are extra playable characters?

I feel that more characters is better as long as they exist outside of battles. Games like Fire Emblem can ignore this rule, due to the style of the game, and the presence of Perma-Death in most of them. The extra characters also need to be useful. If you give me a character whose abilities or fighting style aren't practical, and they don't have any development beyond joining the party (all the Demon Lords in the first Disgaea game), then you're just wasting my time. On the other hand, if every character is usable and has development outside of battle, such as what was done with the Mana Khemia series, then the extra characters are great.

[Poll] Super Nintendo Vs. Sega Genesis

I prefer the SNES when it comes to what I myself have enjoyed, but my brother and I had a lot of fun with multiplayer games on the Sega Genesis Collection for the PS3. I think Sega lost a lot of potential buyers and players because their flagship character was limited to a speed-run themed game and some awful spin-offs, while Nintendo had a certain few gems called Mario Kart and Super Mario RPG, and the rest of Mario's spinoffs (outside of the CD-i) were pretty good and functioned as something besides a virtual pinball machine.

Final Fantasy III "Remake" Coming to Steam (With Cards!)

I learned from the Humble Bundle that Final Fantasy III (Original NES III, not screwed up North American numbering III) is coming to Steam. It's more or less a port of the PSP version, which was a port of the iOS version with enhanced graphics , audio, and quick-battle, which was a port of the DS version with enhanced graphics, which was an actual remake... But this time, it has Steam Trading Cards and Steam Achievements. If you haven't yet played the original Final Fantasy III or one of its many remakes, this may be the most enhanced enhancement yet, and could be something for you to look into. Should the last boss be super challenging?

I'd estimate that many (if not most) players are looking for challenge
Not so many in JRPG communities, because there are plenty who:
1. Play them for the story.
2. Want to bash the buttons without much thinking and see numbers go higher.
I suspect that this is a consequence of RPGs usually having brainless combat thus weeding out people who demand tactics. People have mostly given up on the idea of combat actually requiring thought. I know that even though I would like more thoughtful combat, I get suspicious whenever a game creator claim that his/her game actually requires tactics. Usually, my suspicions are very well founded.


Mimana Iyar Chronicle. The game was specifically advertised as "You can't just mash buttons and win". I beat the entire game pressing 'X' or whatever the attack button was. I think I used healing things about three times in the entire 12-hour game. It was advertised as a 30+ hour game. Lots of walking, pretty much no music outside of town or battle. The game was a joke yet somehow managed to get positive reviews from players who thought the game was "challenging" and "18 hours and I'm only at the fourth boss!".

The last boss consisted of: Attack. Walk away from final boss's attack. Hope awful AI-controlled allies attack and manage to dodge. Watch allies die. Wait for final boss to heal back to max HP. Repeat five times. Win a feeling of buyer's remorse.

Games based on World Cultures

Part of the problem is that much of African culture is passed down through word of mouth and storytelling, while places like Greece, Egypt, China, Europe, and Japan have well-documented stories and fables that have been in libraries for hundreds of years. In order to make an accurate game within Africa, you would have to find a lot of tribal elders who would not only be unlikely to speak any languages you know, but they might not be willing to share information with an outsider, out of fear of corrupting their traditions. Much of what we think we know about African tribes is based on assumptions, observations, and stereotyping, with a few exceptions. I think European and Asian culture is used so often because of ease-of-access and the amount of mythical creatures and demons that exist within those cultures. As far as I know, African culture has less mythical beings and more human spirits, so it would be far less interesting for the typical RPG-player who is expecting dragons, devils, angels, and sex monsters.

If a "fresh take" means shafting the HMs, I'm all for it, because JESUS CHRIST there's so damn many of the in that game...

Not that I even have a 3DS right now, but, yanno... someday.
Well the trailer says, "Explore a dramatic new world!" So perhaps it is an entire new quest together, or at least new towns etc. That would be nice and interesting!

Maybe we can explore the unused mountain range and jungles at the northern end of the map. Or they could fill in all the unused ocean space with about, y'know, forty to fifty new islands, or have a sibling continent to the east. I feel as though Hoenn was the smallest region with the most backtracking; perhaps we can travel to new locations by cruise ship, since Hoenn always seemed to be the wealthiest region with its contests and submarines, rocket ships, and cruise ships.



They're just asking for five new major cities and two minor ones with possible post-game content such as newer Pokemon.

But seriously, I started the series with Ruby and I'm pretty nostalgic about it even if the Hoenn region wasn't that great. It did bring the most drastic changes to serious, such as IV and EV values, which in my opinion made the series worse, but it also introduced more strategic moves that fill the competitive side of the games. I don't know how I feel about the redesigns of Kyogre and Groudon, though. The Omega and Alpha markings on their bodies kind of bother me.

Need opinions on story/plot/title for fire emblem

The first thing I just want to throw out there is that if it doesn't reference any previous Fire Emblem games or contain much of their content (items and spells) then you could avoid using "Fire Emblem" in the title of the game, which would allow you to later sell the game if it contains all original content. If you do use items/characters/resources, then by all means keep using the same title.

Second, as a long-time Fire Emblem fan, I can't help but notice that you have a character named "Hawkeye" in the leaders list. In Rekka no Ken (Known only as Fire Emblem outside of Japan), there was a Berserker character named Hawkeye. He was story-essential for a couple chapters and side-quests. I don't know if the reference is intentional or not, but if not, you might want to consider changing his name, since to my knowledge no Fire Emblem game has re-used playable character names to date.

Aside from that, it seems to flow with typical Fire Emblem plot lines and could easily be worked with.

How important are: PLOT TWISTS?

Just be sure to never, ever use the plot twist "it was all a dream" to end a story. Ugh.


Brave Story: New Traveler. Ruined my enjoyment of the game. Up until the ending, I thought it was well made for a random non-mainstream RPG. Not only was it all a dream, but after you find out it was all a dream, you and your friend go to see a movie that is based upon the events of the game that just occurred.

And Final Fantasy X to some extent. Half your party is either already dead and are just ghost-zombies or they're figments of a dream.

Also, Children of Mana. The end of the game implies it was all just a story being told to some children, and it then proceeds to tell the child (the player, presumably) to go to bed.

That's still way too long! I can't understand how you think this is reasonable.

Also, I know kory's joking there, but long, unskippable cutscenes mesh dreadfully with difficult final battles. Don't do this, ever.

Anyway, getting back to the whole "final boss tests all your knowledge" thing, a good alternative is to incorporate many of the battle mechanics into the battles of the final dungeon instead. It still tests the player's knowledge without squeezing too many gimmicks into one fight.


Unless you can save between the cutscene and battle. In The Legend of Zelda: Windwaker (not an RPG, but same concept) you could save after killing three forms of the final boss before climbing to the top of the puppet theater you fight him in to face off against his final form. Or you could do what Final Fantasy XII wisely did and allow you to skip the damn cinematic so you don't have to keep dying and re-watching.
