Gaming and game design are my hobbies. I've spent the most time with VX Ace and 2k3 (prior to Steam release), but the only thing I've ever finished anything with is 2k.

Psychology was my first degree, but being responsible for depressed kids was too stressful. So I got a Masters in Healthcare Management and now I'm responsible for depressed adults!

[General] Idea for 2 player game

I don't think I've ever played a multi-player game where a Tag-type game mode worked the way the developers intended. It usually ended one of a few ways:

1. The player who starts as "it" remains it the entire round, since all characters moved at the same speed, so they could never catch anybody unless their target made a serious movement mistake.

2. Players who had been playing the game for a significant amount of time knew of glitches or collision issues that would allow them to either hide or avoid the person who was "it", or always be able to catch other players if they were "it".

It works if the person who is "it" can tag people from a short distance with a weapon or something (like a Hunter/Hunted game mode), but physical contact was almost impossible to perform.

Other than that one mode, the others sound like they could work if done properly and with extensive testing.

[RMVX ACE] Looking For Certain Tutorials

Are you by chance talking about...

...THIS ONE!?

It's not the exact one I was looking for, but it is very similar and gets the job done. Thanks!

[RMVX ACE] Looking For Certain Tutorials

Several months ago, I remember seeing a tutorial of sorts that explained how to do some interesting things in RMVX Ace, among them creating skills that would deal damage based on whether or not an enemy was already inflicted with a status condition, whether they had been hit by a different skill, etc. all from the damage formula box without any other scripting. Either the tutorial was on here or the link to it was on here, and after about two hours of searching through old topics, I can't seem to find it. Does anybody know where it went or which site it was on? I had it bookmarked, but my computer crashed some time ago and I lost all my bookmarks and saved pages in my browsers.

How do you feel about dungeon crawling?

I don't mind grinding for maybe 30 minutes to an hour to gain a couple levels or skill points to overcome a boss, especially since it's usually brought about by my own choice of avoiding previous battles just to run through a hallway faster. But grinding should be an alternative (or in my case a punishment), not the main solution.

In Etrian Odyssey Untold, you could grind and just use brute force to get around several bosses, but the game gave you the perfect party build in Story Mode to use skills, guards, and ailments to create a strategy against every main boss. There were also hints provided by tavern patrons and some main NPCs on how to obtain conditional monster drops or defeat powerful enemies.

If your game has a story with it, then there should be plenty of ways to circumvent grinding. If it doesn't, then I can understand maybe requiring a little bit of grinding to bump up the play time, but it shouldn't form the core of any modern dungeon crawler.

Fire Emblem If (Japanese Title) Announced For USA

At the U.S. Nintendo Direct on Jan. 14th, this little beauty was announced:

It's a new Fire Emblem title for the 3DS, brought about by the overwhelming and unexpected success of Awakening a couple years ago. While Awakening was scheduled to be the end of the series for the foreseeable future, the amount of money that Nintendo made and the renewed interest among the English-speaking fanbase has resulted in a new game. The biggest change visible in the trailer?

The game is now styled after Feudal Japan. Not Europe like in every other title. You now have samurai, mounted warriors wielding naginatas, and demons as well as monsters based on Eastern legends instead of western. Also, belly dancers that cast magic.

The game is already named in Japan as "Fire Emblem If", and according to some gaming websites, "Features a world that is much more largely impacted by choices made in the game", hence the title. It also features "The biggest challenges in a Fire Emblem game to date". I'm looking forward to this one, especially since the character models now have feet, load times for battle scenes have been reduced, and other enemies are visible in the background during battle scenes, so it's no longer a duel on a vast empty field.

And don't worry Europe and Australia, it's probably coming to you too.

Zelda Wii U

"Starfox will arrive next year before Zelda".

So now we're getting not one, but two long-awaited games in 2015? My wallet screams in agony.

I'm hoping the empty spaces are filled with non-essential dungeons or towers where you can get heart containers or pieces or empty bottles or something. Kind of like how Windwaker was, where you could find an island that had no purpose other than giving you a treasure chart or a heart piece.

Band Art Game: Remastered Collection

Football In Occupied Poland is a German rock band that focuses on themes such as oppression and rebellion, drawing from Germany's occupation of various European nations during WWII. They specialize in heavy anthems that sound right at home in crowded open-air venues.

Their first single, Stigmella Glutinosae, is an instrumental piece inspired by the lifespan and development of the moth by the same name. The moth larvae burrow down into a host leaf much like the German army burrowed into foreign towns, and two generations of the moth are born every year, which the band felt symbolized the two or three generations that have been born since the end of the war.

Fuck Christmas

This is the only time of the year where I can watch the live-action version of The Grinch three times in a row without being judged for it, so that's what I'll be doing some time next week.

OR&AS

To tell you the truth, I'm probably going to trade in my Gen 6 games on something else next time I venture to EB Games.

I'm doing the same once something big comes along that I want. Either the next big Zelda title or some kind of big RPG.

At this point I'm pretty sure OR/AS is just an expansion to X&Y. It just adds more Mega Evolutions and allows you to catch old legendary Pokemon while re-introducing contests.

Fuck Christmas

Christmas was something that mattered more to me as a kid than it does now, but it's also something I look forward to doing a few years down the road when I (hopefully) have a kid or two.

Being in college, I get about 5 weeks off for the winter between semesters, which is timed to accommodate Christmas & New Year's. On the downside, I work crazy shifts including overnight ones in the weeks leading up to Christmas and you can only hear so many renditions of the same Christmas song in a twelve hour period before you start to go insane. I worked overnight with a half dozen other people on Thanksgiving to decorate the store for Christmas, and that was an adventure.

As for gifts, I've really grown out of receiving them in the past several years, and when my parents ask me to make a list, it's a struggle. I end up asking for clothes and things I need as opposed to things I want. And I've never liked giving gifts, since you need to worry about how the recipient will react, and whether or not you're giving them as much as they're giving you and if you can even afford to do so.
