Other RPG Maker games that inspire you?

author=Tau
I have a whole bunch of articles I've made on the games that have inspired me & the community over the years so just check my profile out I guess.

Have you thought about bringing those back at all? XD I used to really enjoy them.

[DONE] Scheduled Downtime - SUN, DEC 3rd @ 10AM CST

Nice work Ankylo. XD Hopefully this will help alleviate some of RMN's recent slowdowns/crashes.

2k3 Wasteland Edits

Nice edits.

I wonder if pewdiepie still checks in here?

XD Wow, had he ever actually posted here? If so, you'd think RMN would have slightly more traffic considering his YouTube status.

[RMMV] My game was denied for no (good) reason.

Our dear rmners have this weird thing where they're perfectly ok with people stealing graphics from triple a games, but as soon as someone steals from an indie game then that's when there's a problem.

I don't know if there ever was a public explanation for this, If there was I guess I didn't see it, but it's one of these funny quirks of life you're better off accepting than trying to understand, for the sake of your liver.

Logical or night, I think RMN has rightfully tried to preserve RPGMaker's history of creating "new" art with existing assets from commercial games, that has fueled most of our community before RPGMaker Web and the new generation of engines. Strictly for non-commercial games, of course.

Stealing from other indies is more harmful in the sense that you're doing more personalized and immediate damage to your peers (on this site or elsewhere). It's going to be more creatively stifling than stealing graphics from Rudra or something else from 20+ years ago.

Banned from the rpgmakerweb forums for no reason

Lol, maybe Nessiah can give some clarification if she still checks RMN.

What are your long-term plans as a game developer?

Like most other people have said, I'd like to be able to work a day job pretty minimally (or ideally, not at all XD) - nothing lavish, but just enough income to work on my projects full-time, and be able to start up a small LLC to fund the artists or other staff who might contribute to them.

In the short term, my only goal is to finish BR as a freeware project.

If it gains enough popularity and positive response, two of the majors options are: convert it into a bigger, commercial project a la Ara Fell, or (more likely) work on a smaller, spinoff game, or something entirely new that's commercialized from the very beginning of development.

RPGs obviously are a huge time/life investment to develop, so I've had to swallow the fact that any financial return I may get is probably years away. XD

Creating new maps, updating old ones, and more

author=deth
One unfortunate part of game development that I'm sure the vast majority of all developers experience is the overwhelming urge to constantly redo early sections. If one gets stuck in the cycle of constantly remaking things, the development process can be unnecessarily extended. This is a trap I'm trying my best to avoid, but still there are maps that are no longer up to par.

I plan to remake only two dungeons so that I don't wind up endlessly remaking maps just because I'm a bit of a perfectionist. I may post comparison screenshots when these maps are remade to show the progress I've made since I first started making this game in 2011.

Yeah, this is way too relatable. XD

I don't think there's anything wrong with updating old material, as long as it genuinely helps to make the game a more polished, coherent experience. As long as you can have the self-criticism to know when "enough is enough", so to speak.

Especially in the past few years, this game has a really great atmosphere going for it, and a strong use of color. The maps also have a great stylistic consistency...for example, the screenshots below all look like they could have come from the same source:

I wouldn't mind for the old locations (especially the maps using the Suikoden II tiles, which are much different in style) to be updated to be more like these areas. Or at the very least, edited so they're aren't just direct rips.

Great work!

Not only is the mapping quite good, but it has a very great sense of "mood" and color. Is this part of a full dungeon?

More progress on the cave/forest hybrid dungeon.

Awesome concept and execution, but you might wanna tone down the light effects a little bit. Also the light source at the top of the image (daylight from outside?) clashes pretty hard with the torches. Maybe remove the two torches on top? Or remove the light they give off.
Thanks for the comments!

Not all of those tiles are rips from the same source, so I heightened the lighting effects, just so the dungeon would feel more "coherent" in its atmosphere. I can see why you think they may be a bit excessive, though.

Edit: Eh, here's another screen for the hell of it. XD This is the exterior part of that same dungeon.
