Is there Something Wrong with me? Am I just not a good dev?

author=LockeZ
Ocarina of Time is terrible. Chrono Trigger is terrible. Shovel Knight is terrible. Grand Theft Auto 3 is terrible. Final Fantasy 7 is terrible. They all have countless problems! I could spend a solid month talking about the flaws in any one of them.

Those games are world-renowned. You can't seriously expect to be better than all of them.

If you think "terrible" isn't a good word for that, you can label that with whatever terminology you want. But my point is, don't get discouraged when you realize people can very justifiably do the same thing to your games, and probably for even longer.

If you're deliberately using the word "terrible" you're doing so with the belief that the entirety of the experience is negative. You can't change the definition of a word.

I guess I just have to question your semantics and approach to the discussion. Saying "____ is bad" is far-removed from pointing out flaws or shortcomings. It's not constructive. Sure, I'd agree with Ciel that for a game that may have received undeserved acclaim otherwise, it might be more understandable or justifiable.

But if you're going to insist that RPGMaker/indie games "suck" across the board, most people are going to interpret that as an overall refutation - i.e. a claim that the experiences these games deliver is quite mediocre. That there's nothing to appreciate in playing them. Applying such a sweeping/uninformed generalization not just to RMN, but all of the community, is not only untrue, but yes, it is depreciating and potentially offensive. Just my opinion.

Of course your game fucking sucks. Every game on this website does. If RPG Maker games were any good, then nobody would bother to spend millions of dollars making AAA titles. Don't try to make something good. Just try to make something better than you are now. That's the goal. Improvement. The better you make it, the more people will enjoy it despite the fact that it sucks.

Yeah... it's hard for me to see how an attitude like this is going to motivate or help anyone. There are hundreds of "AAA" titles that are equally terrible and derivative. I think it's really an apples and oranges issue you're getting at here.

No, most games on this site are not the next Chrono Trigger, but there are talented writers, artists, programmers (etc) in this community. Even if a game isn't perfect, it has to be scrutinized within the understanding that most of the time, these projects are a labor of a single person over many years.

I'm not trying to make this personal, but why be a moderator of a site full of "terrible games"? It seems a bit counterintuitive. I'm more in alignment with LordBlueRouge's (and others) thoughts - people here deserve to feel good about their work, even if it is terrible. They don't have to maintain such a toxic/self-depricating attitude in order to be motivated to improve.

Rpgmaker XP Tile Sets

author=InfectionFiles
^I feel Ace has it on rm2k3. The million autotiles and the three tileset options is better than rm2k3 ultimately.

It's hard now to go back to 2k3 from Ace.
Interesting. That hasn't been the general consensus I've heard, but I know opinion can vary on this topic.

I tried to pick up MV for about 5 days, but I found the mapping interface extremely cumbersome and clunky. I stopped using it almost entirely because of that reason. I didn't understand the need for that many auto tiles, the blocky/square RTP (although I know this is an easy fix), the small size of the tile-sets, and so on.

As others have said, XP had the best balance between 2k3's mapping engine and the newer iterations. More tile layers, unlimited color fidelity, etc. It feels like they've taken steps backward with VX and beyond.

Eh, with a few notable exceptions, you're only a "bad" developer if you stop trying. It might surprise you to learn most of the notable developers in this community started off with very humble beginnings. Learning to accept criticism is all part of the process, albeit sometimes a tedious one. It's nice to see someone speaking openly about this, because most people just silently internalize it.

This might sound vague, but just try to think critically about what type of feedback you're receiving. Are they being constructive? Do you they genuinely want to help you improve? Are they giving specific examples of design flaws? If not, they might just be one of the many ego-boosting trolls that are out there, and they may not be worth listening to. This doesn't just apply to IGMC content either.

@Blindmind:
Absolutely beautiful. Does that pano make sense, though? Are they high enough up to see only clouds outside?

Also, I take full credit for the entire area, just so you know.
Noted XD

I could probably change the pano to a landscape and achieve the same effect, so that's a possibility. I haven't added any puzzles to the room yet, but I just wanted to cement the basic layout/mood.

Meiscool & the things he did with Rudra were inspiring.
Yeah man, he was a definite inspiration.

I've tried to track down his game from 2011-14, but it seems like it's vanished off the Internet. It was one of the most beautiful I've ever seen. XD

More progress on the cave/forest hybrid dungeon.

Does anyone Remember RpgRpgRevolution? (Remembering RRR)

author=Darken
It's interesting that RMN for a bit did get a "mean" reputation as I remember it being mentioned in a newcomer thread ages ago. (but this was cake compared to previous RM communities, {I say this as someone who joined RMN super early}). I think RMN just persisted as a merger of veterans who cared about RM games but also can still be observant about whether or not little 14 year old timmy's game should be using the site's bandwidth. It also helps having actual database that avoids people from just dumping their games in a really inconvenient forum system. Most of all DOES THE ADMIN ACTUALLY MAKE RM GAMES?
I think a lot of that reputation resulted from cultural residue of the GW period, the "harsh critique for the sake of the craft" sort of mentality. Unfortunately, the line was sometimes blurred between constructive criticism and needless personal insults; but thankfully Liberty and Kentona cleaned up that mess.

RRR gave people a chance to really talk about their games at length, often in very incredibly descriptive detail: but on the flipside of this, no one really wanted to provide any sort constructive criticism towards these games on RRR - which Name73 really needed, severely in order to improve. - like, It's not that people didn't want to give feedback, but they sort of lacked the experience to do so, like you would regularly see on gamingw (I may be wrong about this though, so feel free to correct me.)
Yeah, this is also an important point! Compared to RMW, RMN has far more long-term experience using these engines, especially the older versions of RPGMaker. For example, I see people on RMW in the 2k/2k3 forums asking questions like...how to put together a tile-set. XD

Small things like that, our older users may take for granted, so RMN has the opportunity to help 'pass the mantle down' for newer users, more than ever before.

DEEP 8

How does this have zero user comments? It's one of the best-looking 2k3 games floating around on RMN right now.

I'll add the current demo to my list of games to try out this week. ^-^
