Thoughts on RPG Maker MV?

author=BizarreMonkey
After the clown-college freakshow that was Town5 from VX, now I'm hearing everything is atleast decent, and some near on par with Uematsu's work.

Wait, is this a serious comment? Lol..

@Blind: It's a nice map, but I think you're right about something. Going from your detailed mapping style in 2K3 and transitioning into MV while using the same high level of detail actually makes the map a little harsh on my eyes. Unless of course, you desaturate the tiles ( since MV's palette is blinding >< ). Then it could work. Or use a tint that drops the brightness.

Yeah, that's a good point. Looking back at that screenshot, I'm not sure what I was thinking. XD

One thing I can actually agree with Craze on, is there's a very fine line to walk in achieving an effectively detailed, or "ambient" map. Too many steps over the line (with clutter, overlays etc), and you risk distracting from the design itself, or the raw strength of the tiles.

Honestly, it's a trap a lot of newbies (or even experienced RMers) succumb to, when trying to overcompensate for an empty/lifeless game. Having a higher resolution only exacerbates the problem, unfortunately. A "less is more" approach is probably the best middle ground.

Ara Fell (2k3) versus AFXP, for example:

^^ Still highly detailed, but clearly there's more restraint and nuance in the HD screens.

I can see the evolution even in your own screens, too. XD (Not that the first screen is bad.)

I agree with luiishu about the cliffs and auto-shadow, but those are minor issues. The "sand tile" is a bit bland though, maybe the terrain could use more rocks, texture variance, etc?

dear bm,

why are you using that light overlay

not only does it look terrible the autoshadow you left in looks even worse because of it

love,
craze

...lfx hatred aside, the basic composition of the area is nice but there's just a lot of clutter. tilespew does not an engaging, pleasant map make! you have like twenty+ different bits thrown everywhere, like those random leaves on top of a pillar.

i just wanted to lure a response from you~<3

In seriousness, does it really read as intrusive to you? The opacity is pretty low, and the map is much flatter without it. It's not as though the light source is nonsensical, i.e. the shot below..

I mean, the actual *path* leading to the cave is generally free from clutter.

..But in fairness, I didn't give the issue much thought, so you're probably right in this case. XD I've developed a very characteristic style of mapping that looks great in Rm2k3, but doesn't really... mesh too well with these tiles.

If I decide to continue with MV, I'll probably have to adapt and play to the strengths of the RTP (whatever those might be?) or hire someone to make tiles.

(Or stick with low-res? ^-~)

rpg maker mv is a large step backwards

I've said it before, but that autotile thing really decreases MV's value and I sincerely hope it gets fixed. MV has a lot going for it, but... bluraugh. That and the lag when mapping makes that whole portion of MV sour at the moment. =|
Yo, your MV lags? Give me yo specs.

Yeah, same here. (The map engine in particular is nearly unusable.. xD) It's pretty disappointing, considering I've run fairly modern PC games with no major issues.

I'll try out the fix, though!

First MV map. XD Mostly just fooling around.
Oooii, hell will probably freeze over soon~

(Has anyone else experienced mild lag when mapping with this thing btw? It feels clunky and sluggish compared with 2k3, which is only a little bit ironic.)

Two days~ Woo! I'm looking forward to how everyone reacts to it.
By working on my RM2K3 project, probably.

:3

Hah, glad I'm not alone~

Actually tbh, I just submitted my MV preorder. Maybe this will be the engine that finally rips me away from beloved old 2k3~? xD A contest would be a pretty great initiation.

**Also, now seriously considering changing my username to avoid sharing an acronym with.. some people..

Pretty sure those are the RTP tiles, just edited. The shape of the cobble stone is exactly the same, bar the shading, as is the square floors and the wall tiles. The purple-ish wall is, I believe, from Mack.

...I know my RTP and apon lining up it matches perfectly, so yeah. Just pointing that out. The edits are nice, though.

Oh, there's a pixel off on the left-hand part of the railing, where the corners meed. You can see the sunset between it. Might want to fix that. ^.^

Ah, I guess I spoke too soon, lmao.

The overall composition is still strong, though. It looks visually distinctive enough that it's not instantly recognizable, and meshes well with her custom stuff.

The background could stand for another layer of shading with those clouds, but it's a minor nitpick.

Wow.

This is one of the best shots I've seen from you, Luchi. Your style of shading, and the sense of texture here is almost on par with the RTP, which is an incredible feat considering the short time you've been making graphics. I love the color palette, and the sense of mood in this shot especially. (But yeah, take out that godawful shadow. xD)

*Some examples of my mapping.
I hope you're not expecting to be able to make anything that looks remotely as nice as that using the RMMV RTP :)
I'm assuming this is RTP work. I could be wrong.
Ssshh, Craze might hear you~

I mean, there's an obvious reason I've stayed far away from the RTP. I'd be up for a challenge though, if he's willing to pay for it.

I'm a tad more experienced when it comes to Rm2k/3, but shoot me a PM with some of the details? *^_~ How big of a workload are you guys looking for?
