What does it take to get a book published...?

...because, YES, I've been thinking of publishing one for many years now. Of course, I have to FINISH it first, but looking up/researching the prerequisites and processes of publishing a book is something I've yet to do. I thought I'd start here.
Like, what's the money involved? How much do new authors generally make for the creation(s)? How arduous is the process? And how risky is it?

If you ever sign up for a publisher it depends on who they are. But most smuggle more of your profit than you're supposed to make. It's pretty risky going through all the paper work and other things. The publisher can also drop you at any time.

I am very curious - who here has never tried alcohol/drugs/smoking? Are any of you clean, but used to not be?
I personally have never smoked/drank alcohol/done drugs and I know precious few people who have also never done anything, although I know some people that experimented but didn't get addicted.
As a side-note/yell at Craze for being a horrible person-note (meh), if somebody at your high school died from drinking and driving (their or the driver in their car's fault), would you have any sympathy? I was culling some of my old clothes and came across my senior year shirt which has the names of dead guys on the sleeves because apparently it's really sad when teens do illegal, irresponsible things and get killed because of it. Except, uh, I thought they were stupid and felt no pity.
jericho does feeding your cat alcohol make it more curious/liable to be killed by curiosity?

Oh and Craze I didn't mean to diss you or anything! I just appreciate this sort of open flow discourse that this topic could have as opposed to just mechanically rambling off whatever game is currently floating in your console. I will say that if our conversation had gone on too long I would have eventually branched it off. However I do encourage anyone else to hop in or change the subject or start their own conversation or what have you.
Yes, however, I don't think this is the place for console debates.
