Oh, BTW, you guys are smart.
to be perfectly 100% honest i was kind of intrigued by the prospect of playing a new and improved version of bof2 because i like it despite the first half of the game being the most banal scenario writing possible but when i saw this blog post the haphazard inclusion of ershin completely defying graphical consistency and the slipshod skill design really made me think 'i guess they are not as committed to quality as i thought'
UPDATE 1: An Intro, and a Video of...an Intro
Oh, BTW, you guys are smart.
author=Versaliaauthor=WIPI actually do agree with you here. I also think the skill's design is poor.
Not all criticism has to be constructive. There is nothing wrong about saying "this is not a good idea and here is why". I would much rather have someone tell me my idea is bad and say why than to just accept it.author=WIP
And for the record, saying "you should give the control to the player" is constructive. This advice was totally blown off and thrown in the dirt in a very mean-spirited phrasing. I could understand someone posting a rant in retaliation for their idea to be tossed away immediately and without any regard.
I just feel that in this case the retaliation was particularly childish, as it just repeated every criticism already given, in a much more nasty demeanor. "Here's what we already said, being said by a bunch of other people behind your back, suck it suck it suck it."
we were discussing the matter on irc because we often discuss game design issues. it wasn't really behind his back because the general consensus that it was a poor design was shown to him, which is more than he deserved given the ignorance and dismissiveness he displayed in response to earlier helpful feedback. hoping 50 people saying 'this should be changed' is enough to give pause. reconsidering a negatively received design can only lead to a better end product.

What I put forward was constructive criticism - a way to make the sprite fit better into the overall graphical style.
What Ciel put forward was a mean-spirited rant phrased in an obviously inflammatory manner. There are better ways to go about giving unbiased critical feedback rather than posting unnecessary crapfests.
my feedback was perfectly amicable. everyone shut up sit back and praise each others games.

<Neophyte> lol
<Neophyte> that is so bad
<Neophyte> Benediction: Revives all dead allies at 25% HP. Sometimes fails.Â
<Neophyte> let's just
<Neophyte> roll dice
<Neophyte> to see if this works
<ObviousDelirium> "sometimes fails"
<@Kef> if what the character does is completely random
<Neophyte> sorry this turn your char MIGHT not do anything
<@Kef> why also add a chance to fail
<Neophyte> thanks to a roll dice
<Purim> there are 4 layers of randomness
<Neophyte> why would you put that in
<Neophyte> it's fake difficulty
<Neophyte> SOMETIMES FAILS
<@Kef> my reaction
<@Kef> to a skill like that
<@Kef> is to not ever use it
<Purim> i m real mad
<Neophyte> in fps game when you click
<Neophyte> the bullet might not come out of gun
<Neophyte> random chance you know lol
<@Kef> By the way, none of those skills will ever fail six times in a row.
<@Kef> does he not get what 'random chance to fail' is
<@Kef> reminds me of a video i saw earlier
<Purim> By the way, none of those skills will ever fail six times in a row
<Purim> HOW DO YOU KNOW. ITS RANDOM.
<Purim> there are FOUR DIFFERENT WAYS for your turn to be wasted
<Neophyte> lol
<Neophyte> he is dead set on being right
<jericho> none of those skills will ever fail six times in a row because nobody will play the game.
<Neophyte> lol
<jericho> i dont even understand the presence of ershin who is deis in a robot suit
<jericho> when a shaman combined with a character in bof2 you could generally see physical aspects of both the shaman and the character
<Neophyte> the playstation sprite doesn't fit with the snes graphics at all
<Neophyte> Knew someone would say this. That's just the way it's going to be.Â
<Neophyte> my god

the extremely random nature of that skill design is bad because there is no correlation between player input and result. there is no decision making process which is entirely what video games are about, making the right choices to achieve success. it will only lead to frustration when inevitably someone fails 6 times in a row and then tries to revive people when none are dead and then fails to revive dead people 4 times and then fails another three times. the result of this extremely poor game design is that nobody will use it when it's more fun and more effective to actually decide what your characters will do in order to overcome challenges.

Americans are stupid?
I hate when things get over explained..

How about, we do it because when we let people play our games, BOLD the related text and mention it twice, THEY STILL DON'T KNOW WHERE TO GO.
Wouldn't have to do it if players didn't ignore the f**king dialogue. Sorry for the nasty response but this is something that I feel strongly about (aka, really pisses me off)
ya if they don't want to pay attention they shouldn't be playing a genre of game that is traditionally thought of as being more cerebral in nature.
i remember this guy i knew saw the cloud motorcycle commercial for ff7 and bought it then took it back to the store shortly thereafter. when i asked why he said 'i didn't know there was going to be reading'

i like games that have a constantly updated journal that you can check at any time telling you recent events and what your current destination and goal are but also drive incredibly simple concepts into the ground by having the characters discuss it exhaustively in 500 lines of dialogue explaining it to one another again and again to make sure the player knows what is going on(golden sun ds)
