ELDER71'S PROFILE

Hi, I'm Stephen, lead designer of OMNIS - The Erias Line.

Aspiring game-dev, societal drop-out, coffee drinker, chain vaper. Pixel tweaker. Location maker. Character dreamer-upper.

Also a part-time Parallax Mapper available on commission.
(contact me re: commissions at elder71@hotmail.co.uk)

ALSO - I like reviewing games. If you're looking to get your game fairly reviewed with constructive criticism/feedback, PM me or email me or otherwise contact me telepathically. My messenger-pigeon service is out of order following an unfortunate incident that involved a jumbo-jet engine.

Cheers,

S.E

Character size in relation to resolution

author=LockeZ
Though the tradeoff is that this creates a much greater disconnect between the different parts of the game that use different styles of graphics... there's no perfect answer. Figure out how important the environments and the view distance really are to your game. Are there enemies to seek or avoid, secrets to find, puzzles to solve? Or is there consistently poor lighting, or do you want less view distance to add a feeling of danger to a horror game? And maybe how important the main character's appearance is to your game, if there's some reason that's different than usual. Is it an action game, does the character emote while walking around, is his/her appearance player-generated? Or are you bad at art and unwilling to create lots of poses and fluid animations, and want to hide your bad sprite work?

I suppose the ideal is a carefully considered and relevant mix of the above, though the work entailed in creating sprites and tilesets at several different scales probably makes this post redundant to all except the hardiest and most patience makers.

Character size in relation to resolution

I made sprites for my game that are 32 wide by 64 high because I didn't want them to be small like the RTP sprites. All was well until I realised how much that size interferes with the overlay (star) layer. Took me ages to make it work. I often had points where I wished I'd stuck with 32x32 sprites.
That's why the next RPG Maker should have more layers, like RPG Maker XP had.

XP is one of the ones I missed - it sounds like a shiny beacon of hope. How I would kill for more than two layers. I found the solution to be making sprites of objects and walls - the 'Same As Character' level handles in front/behind perfectly.

Offering Detailed Game Reviews (by flap)

My game/demo:
OMNIS - THE ERIAS LINE

* Describe how you want your game to feel to other people.
I wanted to create a unique story and game world; something that players wouldn't have experienced before, something that's new and interesting while still having the spirit of a classic RPG. I want players to feel immersed, intrigued, curious (or even anxious) to know more. It's just a demo at the minute, so I've only just got started on these angles, but I'd like to think the demo is a good sample of my ideas for the project. I hope none of that sounds like hubris, I'm really just ambitious/confident/hopeful for all the work my team and I have done.

* Only submit polished games.
It went through a period of beta testing by others before release and I've since gone over it dozens of times. The current version has been downsized a bit, I've swapped out the music formats, so there may be one or two breaks (fingers crossed) but I've gone through it again myself and it seems to play fine.

* Let me know if you want a ranked review or just feedback (N/A rating).
I think I'd like to be brave and offer Omnis up for scoring :S - though I'd like to add, hopefully without sounding whingy and precious, that the idea of maybe getting my first rating is likely to cause me to develop a nervous heart condition.

* Include the length and maturity rating of the game.
I'd say between 2 and 3 hours - even though it's a demo, there's a fair bit extra, optional stuff to explore. Actually, it's not so much a demo as it is 'as much of the game I've been able to make in two years' :) There're several instances of pretty strong language and some fairly graphic violence, but all in moderation.

Hope you enjoy!

[Poll] Which demake would you like to see?

author=jin69
That FF7 demake looks good. I personally didn't like the fighting style for FF12, I think that one needs a demake.

How did they get the train to move like that in the FF7 video? Is that a picture image?

Might be just a picture that then becomes part of the background so that characters can walk on it. It's a trick I've used myself. That's my guess, anyhoo.

OMNIS - the Erias Line (DEMO)

The ambition overtook my experience for a while, I'm constantly (near daily) uploading new, refined versions.

I'm experimenting with a new design for the game's main logo, really hoping for some feedback on this one.

[RM2K3] How would I create an "Undead" condition.

author=JosephSeraph
no, that kind of thing is exclusive to vxa
Other RMs don't work with Traits and Features.

Darn. Sorry I can't help.

Does 2003 have the Sp-Parameter tab where you can alter the Experience Rate?

Favourite classical FF tracks?

In the spirit of participation, here are my top favourites - but I can only speak for VI onwards... It was impossible to avoid being inspired by these for my own game.

VI
"Death on the Snowfield"
It's a remix/rework of Terra's theme. Mucho melancholy.

VII
"Can you hear the cry of the planet?"
Not necessarily the best musically, but in terms of atmosphere this is my favourite from any FF game I've played.

VIII

"Find Your Way"
In a similar vein to the above, there were a lot of fantastic pieces in VIII but this one lends itself well to my tastes for the mysterious and melancholy.
