Maybe if you could use single words. Like SWORD, RUN or CHOCOBO.
Make a list of about thirty English or game related words and allow people to choose words from that list.
this is lame. that defeats the purpose of the contest! the games are supposed to be language-neutral, so that means no text at all
How about onomatopoeias? Those are rather self-explanatory regardless of the language.
Like POW! for the attack command, KAZAM! for the magic command, BOOM! for a fire spell, KABOOM! for a more powerful fire spell, you get my drift.

Final Fantasy IX had some great dungeon music. My two favourites:

Dragonaut the resonance. It has ugly computer generated dragons, ladies with improbably ample bosoms and the sort of plot you'd expect from most rpgmaker games.

If you equip a weapon on Leg Horse or Phillip (other than the rusty knife in Phillip's case), their normal attacks don't animate properly. Instead, their sprites just turn transparent for the attack's duration.
