Finished this a few moments ago. Loved every bit of it, especially the battle system. It was kind of like Grandia with a caffeine overdose. Which is a good thing, at least as far as I'm concerned.

Final Boss guy could have used a faceset, though. I guess time constraints are merciless.

Blog 6: Prologue + Chapter 1 Demo Now Up for Download!

There appears to be a file (a picture would be my guess) missing. Right after starting a new game, I get an error message saying "Cannot open file Ep43_Hill View."

Casting Call! Part 2 of 3: Flynn

Hidden within this sketch is Flynn's deepest, darkest secret. Can you discover it?

Oh! I know! I know! He has only four fingers on his right hand! He chopped his index finger off in a grisly kitchen accident which changed his outlook on life forever!

What Videogames Are You Playing Right Now?

Grandia 3

Yes, I know it's supposedly the lowest point in the series (not counting spinoffs), but Grandia 2 is my favourite game ever, so I can not NOT play this.

So far I can say that Miranda is the greatest RPG hero's mother ever (not that she has much competition, seeing how most are dead before the game even begins). I recall someone in IRC saying that one of the reasons the game sucks is due to its two most interesting characters being permanently sidelined at some point. I don't remember what the names of these characters were supposed to be, but based on what I've seen in my current playthrough, things aren't looking good for Miranda and Alonso.

There is an effective vertical limit of 32768 pixels (1024 rows of tiles). Beyond that point, it'll still let you import the image, but the scroll bar in RPG Maker XP won't work, so you won't be able to scroll down to actually use anything past that. Also, if your tileset is more than about half of the max size, the RPG Maker editor program will lag a little (the game won't, just the editor).

This is indeed big enough to cram the entire RTP into one tileset, and is a huge amount, though if you are using a lot of imported resources you'll probably still need to create multiple tilesets. (Well, you don't need to, but it's way easier than going through and deleting unused tiles out to make room.)

1024 rows of tiles isn't unlimited but it is still a massively huge amount. This is basically the best reason to use RMXP, since along with the three layers, it gives you by far the easiest time creating maps among the Enterbrain RPG Makers. I'm totally spoiled by it now. My typical mapping style now is to get to a point in the map where I want to place an object and go, "Oh, I should put an engine here. Do I have an engine in my tileset? No, doesn't look like it. I'll add the one from Tales of Destiny to the bottom of the tileset. In fact I might as well just add the entire ToD factory tileset to the bottom of my tileset. I'll probably use other parts of it later."

Thank you! This knowledge will be very helpful whenever I decide to actually put some maps together. Too focused on drawing stuff for other parts of the game right now.

The Welp Advice Corner

I think I read somewhere that RPGmaker XP's tilesets don't have a vertical size limit. I haven't tested this yet, but assuming they didn't, it would be possible to mash a bunch of tilesets together (like say, the entire RTP folder) into an extremely versatile 256 x ridiculouslyhugenumber macro-monstruosity of a tileset. Would there be any drawbacks to doing this? I just can't bring myself to believe that an RPGmaker program would let me do something that convenient.

What are you thinking about right now?

The new Transformers movie is Terrible with a capital T (and this comes from someone who enjoyed the first one), do yourselves a favour and watch something else.

The game is not working.
Maybe because I don't have the rpgmaker VX?

You don't need the program itself, just its RTP, which you can download here

Go Make me a Sandwich: Sexuality in Bayonetta (and other games)

I think it's kind of funny how fictional women being depicted with revealing outfits and/or exaggerated erm, attributes raises eyebrows everywhere, yet full male nudity is often played for laughs and no one bates an eyelid at it. Either I'm terribly unlucky, or seeing a man's exposed buttocks is a largely more common occurrence in mainstream media (especially movies) than the female equivalent. Videogame example: Breath of Fire 4. Ryu starts the game butt naked, and no one makes a big deal out of it. A scene in which the female characters are implied to be naked (nothing is actually shown) is completely removed from the western version of the game.

I don't mind oversexualization, whether it be the male or female variant. I have seen plenty of guy's asses and my eyes have yet to melt off. But double standards? Those really tick me off.
