A Very Long Rope to the Top of the Sky

I'll go back to the cave to see the hints, but that puzzle is definitely fully solvable. I'll probably post it in an edit in a few minutes.

Sadly yes, no way to tell what you might need to craft something later. One thing is certain though, the game's main storyline is beatable without crafted gear, though I imagine some of the bonus content is tough enough to need it.

The only things I ever crafted were things strictly from farmable materials and
Fading Memory
and I managed to finish the storyline today, though it sure was tough in a few spots, namely (boss names follow, open at own risk)
Weiss, Rutger MK2 and the final boss which I won't spoil even here.

And yeah, that area you opened up
seems to have several phases in increasing difficulty as you get more keys - I have fairly good reason to believe the last phase is actually a bonus dungeon of sorts, harder than final storyline content.

EDIT: my full puzzle solution:

With both buttons and doors numbered from left to right, and buttons shortened to B and doors to D:
B3 opens D2.
B2 opens D2 or D7, but D2 is taken so it opens D7.
B4 opens whichever edge is near B2, thus D8. You got this far just fine.
B5 opens either D4 or D5, moving on.
B6 opens whatever is two doors to the right from B5, so D6 or D7. D7 is taken, so B6 opens D6. you could easily stop here and just exit the room, but let's continue for a bit longer.
B5 opens D4, since D6 is two doors to the right from that, as per the hint for B6.
B7 opens D5 or D7, but D7 is taken so it opens D5.
B1 can't open a door on the edge, which only leaves it to open D3.
B8 opens the only remaining door, D1.

Weren't there two "free" Training Bands somewhere too, Housekeeping? I somehow got those but don't remember buying any.
EDIT: Wait, can you even buy those? My bad, I guess the fact I had two confused me... still means not unique, in a way. xD

Hm, is that the dungeon with the green-purple orbs? In general, that dungeon forces you to be on a specific orb color when leaving a section, but there tend to be hidden treasures you can get to if you do the following:

When you enter a new section, hit its first orb once and then go back to the end of the previous section. The way back should be blocked by pillars, but instead there may be a vine leading to a treasure.

I hope this also includes the one you asked about, sorry if I misunderstood!

As for your other question... is that the one with a sign next to each button, and wires going through a wall so you can't see them? I managed to figure out which button opens which door with a piece of paper, with no guessing at all, so at least in the version I'm using the logic is there. I haven't seen the older versions though so maybe someone else should answer this...

EDIT: As for the found gear question, it mostly is unique, yes. I seem to remember finding a few rings that you also get in shops, but the rest is unique I think. The notable exception is that

you keep your items on a new game plus, but (most) chests get refilled.

Might be interesting to see if Amos tells you 54 now - either there are more or he doesn't count her for some reason? That's my guess anyway.

EDIT: Out of curiosity, I counted the people in my town myself (major spoiler warning, events and town areas included):

Amos says I have 53 people.
I didn't count the nameless guards, the council and Magnus, as well as anyone else without a portrait, such as animals (since those in general come along with a specific character anyway).
Unlike Amos, I counted every individual in a group, instead of the group as a whole.

Count per screen:
Farm area: 4 outside
Hunting area: 2 inside, 2 outside
Fishing area: 3 outside
First residential area: 5 inside, 1 outside
Woods residential area: 6 inside
Beach residential area: 5 inside, 2 outside
Church area: 7 inside, 2 outside
Park area: 1 outside
Theater area: 1 inside, 1 outside
First shop area: 4 inside, 1 outside
Woods shop area: 4 inside, 1 outside
Beach shop area: 4 inside, 1 outside
Town center: 12 inside, 3 outside

The events that happened that influenced where people are, as far as I can tell:
Death found Pallance on the sermon, so Death is now in the bar (not counted) while Pallance went to the southwest beach.
Melody went to the bar, talked with Amy and left the bar again, moving to the southeast beach.
Brooke moved to her dancing fountain once it was built.
Holiday made peace with her family and moved in with Margo.
Prim and Mag declared truce and Mag took off her mask, both are staying in their house in the woods.
Gretchen is now the second town greeter, so she and Deidre moved to the center area.
Not sure about this one, but if Walker was originally somewhere else, he's on the southwest beach now. Wouldn't surprise me if he was looking for the theater there.

If anyone finds someone or some event I missed, I'd appreciate it - these are too good to pass up. xD

Did you check the number of people with Amos? Sounds like you're missing
Babette, who sells crafting plans for accesories - you should be able to find her in eastern Silver Spring, in the first house you see to the south as you enter the district from the west (Silver Spring's center)

Thanks pthaeriensflame, I can't believe I missed her behind those crates! Also found the other one by pure luck, so my populace is now complete - thanks guys, I'd still be on a wild goose chase without this thread.

Thanks for the reply. Regarding the state of my town:

I got BeBop *really* shortly after I wrote that, making it 49 people now. I also got an upgrade for Neil's wares (basic consumables shop). I should have some of the harder to find people, such as Walker, who delightfully reminded me of Ryoga, "the eternally lost boy" from Ranma 1/2. I definitely am missing those that unlock after reaching Ubiquity though (which I only just now did and lost the fight there painfully by getting out-buff/debuffed, but I'll work on that on my own for now). So I guess that I'll make my recruitment rounds again now and see who I can convince this time. Oh and thanks for the perfume shop upgrade tip, that should come in handy! I've been running the theater quite a bit but I guess I missed that combo... Perhaps one of the crueler combinations is Beatrice and Miranda, but they're all great, haha.

EDIT: Wow, just checked the town hall for the last minute upgrades you mentioned - I can't believe I would have missed that possibly for hours, heh.
EDIT 2: Found two more in Balfur:
Holiday and Minerva

EDIT 3: Ok, after sifting through this thread it seems I may know who I'm missing:
Deidre and Flavio
I can't even find the latter one despite searching most of Balfur, and I can't seem to convince the former one to come yet - any special requirements there?

A Very Long Rope to the Top of the Sky

Hello, first time poster here.
I found this gem of a game only recently and I have to say, it's had me hooked ever since.

I'm quite far already, I think - just finished all soul tear scenes and, to be completely honest, those make this great game awesome. The extra backstory, the different viewpoints... And the best part is how it all clicks into place, things previously only hinted at are explained, while others have strong emotional points.

The Sanctuary itself is a very pleasant surprise as well - what I thought to be a hunt for collectibles (people) turned out to unlock some really good stuff and miscelaneous services. I do have a few questions about it though:

According to

Amos

I have recruited 48 people, and I have all of the expansions as far as I can tell - three zones per district, plus the dancing fountain and I think three upgrades (accesory shop's wares, farmers' and hunters' production) - How many people are there total, and is there any indication or "extra" if you recruit every single one?

And last but not least:
Will

Amy

ever get over the stage fright? I found her talking to

Melody

and that seemed to help, but she's not quite there yet, no matter how many plays I run to let her practice.
