Unusual Concepts In RPGs
author=Versalia
(List of games with custom towns and houses)
and a custom town was one of the things I put in my very first game
should I keep listing or is this common enough
author=Necrile
It's pretty cool, but do you really want me to list all the unusual things about my game?
(List of special features found in game)
Top that.

Stop being an ass, Versalia. It is actually quite uncommon in rpgs. Just because it is in a few doesn't still mean its not uncommon. Lets see, the last 5 rpgs I played: Mass Effect 2, Diablo 2, WoW, Disgaea 2, and Demon's Souls...none of them have player housing. Interesting, I thought you said it was common? Huh...I guess I just got the token few that don't have it?

I'm not being an ass, either. I'm merely stating my opinion, whether or not it differs from yours. So fuck you.
IMO, fully aware that I am butting in where I don't really belong, I think that it might be possible that both of you are perhaps behaving a little unkindly towards eachother. Some people may even characterize such behavior as being an ass. SO... I think it might be nice to recognize that we have differing views on this topic, compromise and say that although the idea is not exactly common it is not particular new or original either, then move on to discuss some interesting or creative features we are attempting to implement in our games. :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) (The smiles represent my overabundance of good will and happiness and sincere hope that I will not be stoned to death... )
Do You Enjoy Freedom?
author=Peaceful_Chaos
Freedom is good if there is a point to it. Having a giant world with little to do is pointless. Generally I like a linear story with plenty of sidequests and treasures to do/find.
Agree. With the addition that I like multi-path linear. Give me the occasional choice and I'm happy.
2k3 your way maps, need some answers.
I think if I understand what you want to do for your first question, you can just make each layer of your house as a seperate map, using whichever tileset you like. Then you can connect each one by having a teleport event for the door or stair case that leads to the next floor and back again. So it will work just like an other map but it will seem like layers of a house since you go to each one after heading up a flight of stairs...
I hope this is me actually helping and not just completely misunderstanding what you wanted.

Interesting Items in RPGs
A lot of games have those boost items that increase max hp or increase agility or what have you. The only question that ever arises from using these items is exactly which character to use it on. I think it would be more interesting if those items also reduced a stat.
What about items that help one party member but hurt the other 2 or 3 or what have you. For instance, a healing item that fully heals the party member it is used on, but then silences, posions, and berserks the rest of the party?
An item that talks everytime you use it.
An item that changes the way people interact with you as long as you have it.
A box that can be used to give you 100,000,000,000,000 gold but will permanently kill one of your party members.
A summon item that summons a creature to help you fight a boss but then you have to fight the summon immediately after.
A balloon. That pops. That's it.
A musical instrument that can be used to change the background music.
A hula hoop. Using it makes your character have a hula hoop animation until you quit.
That's all the ridiculous ideas I have right now.

Blue Magic (and other "missable" skills)
author=alterego
Well, here is an idea: how about learning an ability after scanning certain combination of monster? Something like: "if I could combine the strengths of that monster and the strengths of that other one I could develop an awesome new technique" so in this way after scanning a bunch of enemies you could enter a menu where you could study their abilities, mix them and such (like if you were fusing items) and in result learning new spells.
...dunno, I guess I need some sleep. -_-
I think this is a really cool idea, but not quite exactly the way it is. But using combinations to gain unique spells is a pretty sweet idea. Maybe you collect parts of certain monsters and then combine those together like a kind of alchemy idea to then learn the ability... or maybe you just need to kill them and the game keeps track of specific monster skills so that once you have killed the right numbers of the right monsters you get a message like "You learned how to blow sh*t up with a fireball from killing all them there fire elementals!" Or something less ridiculous and red neck sounding.

I actually really need help with a rune system. I need it to be like materia from FF7. Just some sort of equipment that acts on the weapon. Does anyone know of a reasonable way to do this? I am thinking I should have runes be items that get equipped via events or perhaps actual equipment but I know there are limited slots for real equipment. Any ideas or fingers pointing in the right direction would be much appreciated.

Ok. So I have just finished a bunch of technical features of the game. No noteworthy maps or anything like that but the completed list now includes:
Changing class in battle - 3 classes all with their own skills and commands. (Completed)
A playtime clock - to keep track of how much actually time a player has been playing. (Completed)
An in game clock - 1 hour of real time is 12 hours in game time. (Completed)
A day and night switch - to change panaramas, monsters, and access to certain places. (Completed)
Sundials and Moondials - these allow you to change time to noon or midnight respectively. (Completed)
Still to do:
Make or procure all graphical things. Sprites, panoramas charsets, facesets, animations, etc...
Build some maps.
Make some monsters.
Balance leveling.
Get some decent music and sound effects.
Make a rune weapon system.
Make a summoning system.
Set attack commands to perform special skills.
Write the story.
About a billion other things.
Avoid hanging myself.
Are there any of these things that I still need to do that anyone thinks they can help with? Tutorials, resources, advice, I'll take anything you are willing to offer. Thank you all so much for what you have done thus far. I really appreciate your help and kindness.

Enable combo help RPGM2003
If I am understanding what is needed here correctly, you choose hero's turn, and set the first variable to 1x and the second variable you leave at 0. That should make it so that the combo number is reset to whatever value you want every single turn.
The unbeatable battle.
I just feel like one of the most important things a game can do is keep the player immersed. Maintain the illusion. As best as possible, a game should make a player feel like they are the character. When a battle occurs, it shouldn't be a character in a game that goes into battle, it should be the player. Unbeatable battles, unless done really well break the immersion. If the player realizes they can't win it makes them step back from the game, see it as a game, and cheat it by allowing themselves to lose without wasting items. I don't like that. And an unbeatable battle that ends after a single turn might as well just be a cutscene because there isn't really any point to the player actually fighting anyway. That's just how I see it at least.
