Game Story: Advice Wanted.

Marrend has the right of it I think with the break down of factions. I agree. I also think having three different groups will help your game a lot since it won't be the usual us versus them.

I was wondering how your main character got Amnesia. I always think that is an important thing to think about. Now if he is the only one who can awaken this demon, then it stands to reason she doesn't want him to know the truth at all, so could it be that he figured it out once and tried to do something about it, so she erased his memory? Also are you in love with that name? I just personally feel like calling the demon that comes out of the Crystal, Crystiria is a little uncreative? Just a personal thing and not necessarily something you should bother paying attention to.

I think you might also want to go with a more subtle kind of warning about the demon than HEY HERE IS EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT HER SO LEAVE HER THERE IN THE CRYSTAL! Again totally up to you. I like your ancient text idea though. Maybe she is in a myth and they figure it all out over time.

Also I don't understand his original motive. Before he knows about the demon. I may be misunderstanding something here but it doesn't seem to me like he cares about the Crystal or Immortality. It seems like he just doesn't want to be killed. Shouldn't he be working towards just survival then? And not actually finding the Crystal? Or does he want the crystal because then he believes they can't kill him anymore? I guess I just want to know more about this Main Character.

? What twist at the end? The story is pretty straightforward, I think.

For Rastek: Spoiler Alert for others....
I felt the realization that the main character had commited suicide and was actually dead himself was a twist. Up until then I had assumed he was a living character trying to make up for killing the other guy with his car. I suppose it may have been obvious to other people earlier than it was to me.

And, of course, I could have just misunderstand the storyline altogether...

It is in my opinion the greatest television show ever created
Your opinion is wrong.

(Don't misunderstand me, I like Firefly just fine.)

An opinion can't be wrong. Lol. But just for the sake of argueing (since I do love a good argument) what show is better?

oooh, Max! I thought at least you'd make a joke style : "well, at least I've a challenger as negative criticism goes" (no offense!)

I really did try to steer away from negative criticism. I will admit I said some negative things, but negative things that pointed out the problems so they could be fixed. I even gave a few suggestions in the end. Was it constructive criticism? Maybe not quite... but I don't think it was completely destructive either. That is just me though.

Reavers Review

I will agree that the game should be evaluated for what it is. That actually is what I did though. No points were taken off for the lack of guns or space battles or anything like that. It was only mentioned because I felt it should be. The review and the score I gave actually was just for the content present in the game which was terrible even for a little trivia game. As a trivia game it could still be improved. For instance, the very last trivia section being the lock on a door was actually a good way to do trivia. If more of it was done like that it would have been a bit of an improvement of it's own. Also there is never a time that getting to the gameover screen constantly can be considered a good thing. I wanted this game to be good. I did. It's Firefly, but from an objective view, it just doesn't hold up.

Earthquake in Japan

I think it is important to remember that everyone has their own idea about what cause is most important. I would hope that everyone sees this tragedy as being a tragedy along with all other similar situations. However, there are thousands of different causes in the world that deserve support and attention. Obviously no one person can focus on them all. So, Radnen, though your opinion on this topic does not sit perfectly with me, I am willing to accept that this is not the cause for you. I do hope though that there is some other worthy cause that you are putting your money and energy towards when you can. Donate blood, help with neighborhood clean up programs, fundraise for children's hospitals, whatever it is that you care about as long as you are helping with that I think that is acceptable. Another thing to consider though, perhaps if you aren't interested in donating to Japan for this tragedy because the engineering and planning helped so much to lessen the damage, instead why not try to find an engineering or innovation company or cause to support and donate to and help to lessen the damage of future incidents.

Earthquake in Japan

Oh I see. I misinterpretted what you meant. I read it like, "This isn't that bad there WERE 4 bigger than it." Instead of "This is very bad, there were ONLY 4 bigger than it." My mistake and great point.

The other thing to consider too is that earthquakes that cause tsunamis have the capability to cause a lot more damage than those that don't. As has been said already, there are earthquake resistant buildings and earthquake safety drills and what not. There really isn't anything viable like that for a tsunami.

Seeing the footage on BBC of houses being swept away was legitimately frightening. I hope those who're now homeless manage to recover.

It's amazing to think that water is what manages to cause all this damage more than the earth shaking and tearing apart.

in context: there have been four larger earthquakes ever recorded

This earthquake is only the 5th largest recorded, but it is still the largest in Japan. Thankfully many of the larger earthquakes had diminshed casualty rates either because of location or predictions. For instance, The largest earthquake was in Chile, but it had been preceded by foreshocks so the populations was relatively more prepared for it. The second largest was in Alaska and the death toll was about 120 people. Tragic as it is, it thankfully is quite a bit less than caused by this event. The 4th largest in Kamchatka killed noone. So although this is not the biggest earthquake it is one of the most devestating in recent times.

What's your white whale?

I collect old books. Unfortunately, I am young and somewhat poor so right now old means 100 years or so. Last year my girlfriend bought me a copy of The Count of Monte Cristo from 1910. This is my favorite book ever written and it meets the 100 year old criteria. Easily the best gift anyone has ever given me.

Problem is back then books were often printed in parts. My girlfriend did not know that she was buying part 1 of a 2 part book. My white whale is clearly then part 2. Unfortunately, I will not be satisfied with a part 2 of The Count of Monte Cristo printed in 1890 or 1921 or any other year. It has to be printed in 1910.

The search has not been going well so far. :(
THANKS!
High-five for good taste!

Earthquake in Japan

Hostilefun, I'm really glad you heard from them! That's fantastic!

japan is hugely prepared for earthquakes as a combination of being hugely developed and one of the most vulnerable countries in the world in terms of geological activity. tsunami, however, are extremely difficult to prepare for; they're far too destructive and it's rare for an undersea earthquake so intense to strike so near to the coast

This is a very good point and I am glad that someone fleshed it out a bit since I only briefly mentioned it earlier. It's very difficult to do anything about really large earthquakes and this one was the largest Japan has ever had. Unfortunately no amount of preperation is enough for something like an 8.9. Interesting note for anyone that doesn't know: on the scale for earthquake magnitude each value is ten times more powerful than the one before it. So a 3.0 is 10x stronger than a 2.0. The World Series Earthquake from 1989 was a 6.9 which means this current earthquake is 100x worse than one of the most well known quakes of all time.

Somewhat off topic question. Why is everyone on this site so quick to insult and call eachother out? It's always such an aggressive environment around here. We have a very good discussion I think and maybe even some good has come of it so why is there so much animosity towards seemingly everyone? Is it the anonimity of the internet or somethine?

Solar Panel Roads

I actually do a lot of research into alternative energies, as well as biomimicry (Which is designing technologies or processes that draw inspiration from biology). The interesting thing about doing this kind of research is that the major problems that arise with all of the new ideas for innovation are not the ones you might expect. Steep cost is certainly a consideration, but new plans that do manage to get implemented are often derailed by unexpected issues resulting in millions of lost dollars. For example, one building tried using solar panels to produce electricity to help run the building. The light reflected from the solar panels ended up focusing on very inconvenient places. Most notably the apartment building next door and the park across the street. The temperature inside the apartment building climbed drastically and resulted in significantly higher cooling costs and the park across the street ended up with several patches of dead plants. The company that installed the solar panels had to take them down and was out the money. The interactions these technologies have is one of the things that is most often overlooked and yet has one of the biggest impacts. Another fun story is of a building that modelled it's shape after a termite mound to get a passive heating and cooling system working inside the building. They built it facing the wrong direction though since the design would have only worked with the wide section facing north/south. Oops.
