Presidential elections

author=Dyhalto
I think in 2016, we actually may see the beginnings of a genuine third party (or a replacement 2nd party).

If it happens at all, it would be a replacement second party: I don't see us evvvveeeerr having a 3'rd political hat in the ring. If anything the whole of the Republican party might have to reform and become something completely different from what it is now.

What are you thinking about? (game development edition)

Should I really be spending all this time agonizing over level design when no one is going to play the damn game, or like it if they do?

I say yes. Because I won't be satisfied otherwise.

Why is -concerning video games- that church organs make everything seem more evil/foreboding.

I figured that pipe organs are generally associated with gothic/medieval. And thus carry strong religious connotation that calls forth images of the holy vs the profane. That or because organs sound important as all get-out.

BORG CAN'T HAVE FACEBOOK PAGES

So I just got called for an interview by a company I applied to over half a year ago. What a nice surprise!

Probably just an office job doing data entry, as that's what I was on the hunt for 6 months ago. Can't quite remember.

Super RMN Bros. 3

Hey, Halibabica, do you have a clue as to when RMN World starts (I want to make sure i'm there from the very start...)

If you're going to be in the next one then you'd best do what Halibabica says this time and not ignore any Nitpicks.

Good levels are the ones where you die once or twice the first time, and then progressively get better at it as you go. Eventually you can blow through the entire thing like lightning if you master it and know it like the back of your hand. Presenting a challenge that you're able to keep getting better at is a staple of Mario games: Not dying at all is just as bad as dying too often.

The length of the level doesn't matter as much as the kind of game the levels are going into: A game with a lot of levels had better mean short ones. 1 to 2 minutes each. But if you were going to make a short game with few levels, longer ones would be alright. But even then, 6 minutes is indeed pushing it. People are going to die in your level, unavoidably. So you need to account for the additional time that adds.

Demo Released!

Absolutely! I'd love to playtest it. Don't be apprehensive to sacrifice consistency in the music. From my experiences playing other people's levels, its almost always a point in the level's favor. Save if it doesn't fit the level's "theme" I suppose. Using Doom music is probably not a good idea.

But PM me the game whenever you have a chance: I just found a load of free time for this weekend and I'm itching to play something fun.

Demo Released!

So far so good. The demo starts off a bit slow: 1-1 in particular lacks a bit of punch. Its decent as-is, but being the first level of the game you might want to spice it up a bit to leave a more lasting impression. The rest of World 1 was pretty fun, and World 2 is my favorite so far (loved the wood arches).

The only real detriment to the game I can think off is that few of the levels stand out from each other: The levels' design feel solid but they're missing spontaneity. I feel like the current game is lacking in the old "floaty" levels. Like 1-6 in Mario 3. There may be such later on, but establishing levels like that in the early worlds is good for the game as a whole.

  • Since a lot of the levels seem to adhere to more straightforward platforming, I'd strongly recommend not sticking to the default Mario 3 music. In my opinion, the choice of music track is one of the most important aspects of level aesthetics. It can dramatically alter the feel of a level; fleshing it out more. The castle levels in particular felt very strange when they just had the Fortress music over again.

  • A speed of 1 for auto-scrolling stages is too slow. 1.2 or 1.3 is better. (If I remember right, 1.2 is precisely a goomba's walking speed and 3 is Mario's walking speed.)

  • One of the events in World 2's fortress keeps switching off the music in the first section.

  • 3-3 was really good. I haven't seen a lot of people utilize foreground stuff like that.

  • And on that note: 2-Star. That's probably my favorite out of the demo. The early worlds can handle more challenge like that!

Other than that, this looks to be a great game in the works! I'm really digging the castle layouts!

Anyone out there practicing martial arts?

I took Tae-Kwon-Do throughout high school. But I haven't practiced for quite a while so I'm now a grumpy ol' washout. I did teach a Saturday class in my spare time for a very short while. It was a very short while because very few people came to my class. :(

I really need to get to practicing again. Its good for ye health!

Hook Kick: I love the hook kick but it's entirely ineffective if not done right. Hit with the heel, not the flat side of your foot. You want a thud sound, not a slapping sound.

I love Hook Kicks. I always thought it was tricky for people because most try to put a lot of force into bringing their foot up, and lose a lot of power for the backswing.
