Let's Play! Final Fantasy IV Edition! ALSO A GENERAL FINAL FANTASY DISCUSSION TOPIC

(Use "hide"!)

My favorite character is Edward because he's awesome I like Cecil and Kain best, I guess. None of the others are particularly interesting to me so far.

Game Design Discussion of the Week: Status Effects

IE is best used to mean "specifically," not "for example," which should generally be done using e.g.

Someone should make a game where status effects are more prevalent than normal attacks. So like 80% of the damage you deal is from poison, and 20% is from regular damage. I mean it probably wouldn't be fun for too long but for like a one or two hour game I think it'd be pretty cool.

Death Drop

I see a ring fall from the sky. I bend down to pick it up, yet it squishes together. Disgusted, I walk away, but later I die of mercury poisoning.

I drop a crate of toasters.

Left-handed and right-handed? Does that mean anything?

Obligatory yet mostly worthless statement of support: Your commentary is awesome and I look forward to more!

item synthesizing

Do you mean, like, a cooking system?

To add to that, basically you just make a bunch of items and then for the system itself you do a bunch of branches that check to see how many of each item you have.

Iffermoon

Since Iffermoon is one of the "Play Something" games, you really should ask WIP for hosting, else no one will be able to download it!

Timetwister: A Story in Reverse

Okay we all know about those community stories where each person posts the next part of the story. This is like that, except the story starts at the end and goes backwards.

Rule (There's only one)
The end of your post must transition into the beginning of the previous poster's.

Good
Post n: David glanced down; the robot's severed head lay on the ground, sparking eloquently. He shuddered in silence.
Post n+1: She swung the crowbar into the back of the robot's head, a shatter of sparks raining upon the concrete. "Are you okay?" she inquired.

Bad
Post n: David glanced down; the robot's severed head lay on the ground, sparking eloquently. He shuddered in silence.
Post n+1: Jesus flew down from heaven and removed chinchillas from the world.

Post length and writing style don't matter, so you don't have to write much if you don't want to. Trying to screw with the next poster is acceptable and encouraged. Dialogue must work properly. If your post fails to follow the rule, then the next poster should ignore it and proceed normally (just say so).

Don't worry about proper storytelling, because this whole thing would be really lame if we hit the climax immediately and then have to go downhill from there (or maybe not! We'll see). Do at least try to make the story make sense, though. We'll see how long it can go on before everything goes to hell.

The name of the story is Timetwister. Please participate, and good luck!

They stood at the edge of the cape, looking out over the water. The setting sun was reflected in the bay, glistening with a million tiny sparkles. The meteors were falling again; they shimmered in the soft glow of the setting sun.

"This whole ordeal would have been a lot easier if we had only known what the meteors meant from the very beginning. Looking at them now, they're almost beautiful," said Vanessa, enchanted.

"Next time something like this happens, we won't be so naive. We'll be ready," said David.

"But there won't be a next time," Vanessa sighed.

He smiled. "No," he said. "If only we knew."

They were silent for a moment, watching the sunset play out before them in a display of brilliant color. The meteors signaled the sun's last refrain, never to rise again.

"To the end of time?" asked David, looking into her eyes.

"To the end of time."

They drew close, locked in embrace as the last of the meteors fell to earth.

Play Something! Day Sign Ups [August 1st, 2008]

Sign me up for Dragon Fantasy II. And Aurora Wing, which was fun but I never beat.

I've already beaten the other three (and perfectly lowballed KC, until that last boss, which was literally impossible at my level). I'll sign up for writing a review of USG and KC, too.

But I still need a third game. The podcast people said they liked Balmung, so I guess that, unless someone has a better suggestion.

So:

Dragon Fantasy II
Aurora Wing
The Balmung Cycle

And reviews for USG and KC.

Game Design Discussion of the Week: Status Effects

Well I guess I'm not generally speaking from an RPG Maker perspective, since I don't actually use RPG Maker. So if you actually make your own formulas and you want a Haste you can just edit the spell so it boosts your speed by 50%... of course I think the whole Haste thing is always ridiculously overpowered anyway.

My problem with Confuse is that a lot of times there's no way to heal it so you just have to sit there and slog it out. Or your one character that knows the confusion heal spell gets confused (big deal, they're a mage), but while they're confused your fighter ALSO gets confused and then while he's busy slaughtering your party your other members get confused too. Or just die. Confusion always seems to result in unstoppable death in most of the games I've played.

And really, Attack Up/Attack Down/Stone Skin/Haste/Slow/etc... don't really need to be status effects. You can just do stat mods during battle.

RPG Maker sucks at this. Stat mods aren't consistent and are hard to keep track of for the program and the player. Trust me, I've tried. The best way to do is IS to make them status effects.

Well that's kinda lame. Now that I think about it, though, it doesn't really matter either way, except for the fact that stat mods can stack and status effects can't.
