Story Developement: Killing off Characters

Random thought about PC death: Jeigans?

For non-Fire Emblem people Jeigans are characters that start off really good but have pathetic stat growth, so using them at the beginning of the game eats up valuable exp that you'll need later when they pretty much suck.

Personally, the whole "He's too good!" thing means I shouldn't use a character because they will either a) become non-playable or b) join my party much later in the game when everyone else has caught up. It just seems like there should be a penalty for taking the easy route, and making a character who's slated to die overpowered goes along with that. I mean if your gameplay is bad anyway, this is a bad idea, but if you have at least some sort of good gameplay this could be a way of saying "Hey, this is what you get for trying to bash your way through the game with one overpowered character! Now it's time to actually THINK and develop the rest of your team."

Of course you probably shouldn't make it too obvious, or the player will assume they're going to die or betray you. But I don't automatically assume stronger characters are going to die (Kratos at the beginning of ToS), so it might work out.

What program are you using to make the game with?

Corrupt a wish game!

Granted; you suddenly have the realization that the best team ever would be to use all the pokemon with the best base stats. Then you sigh and remind yourself that it doesn't work like that.

I wish the other guy working on this game wouldn't foolishly assume that "this is going to be something big" and instead had some sort of useful skill such as pixel artistry.

Story Developement: Killing off Characters

It's impossible to have a meaningless death. Even if a character is killed by a random stray arrow, their death still means something and the other characters are still going to mourn their loss. Unless they're a random NPC, then nobody cares. But even if you're going for "oh death can happen anywhere for any reason at all," you still have meaning.

Back to gameplay, I don't think death really has a place for PCs, at least not once you're really into the story. It's sort of okay early on before you really have time to invest in the character, but later... not really. Especially not once they've joined The Party. When that happens, a player assumes that they will have the character and keep them until the end of the game for whatever gameplay purposes they want, and it's a major turnoff to take them away at that point. And even if you do the bitch move of "here's another character with the same stats," in an RPG part of your investment into a character is in the character itself, so it's still not really kosher.

If they haven't joined The Party, then you can generally consider them free to kill. Of course you have to make sure that the player doesn't THINK there's a party when there's not. It's the player whose mind forms the "party" construct, anyway. But after they've joined up, you don't really have the right to kill them off, no matter how much it would contribute to the story.

So I totally beat this game. It was really fun, even in spite of the 20 second loading times. My only complaints are that Stellargun is really hard (your ship basically just sucks without powerups...) and that I need some sort of help file to find out where to get the last two characters and where to find the extra content. Also it would have been cool if after beating Taboli RPG that three of the white chests didn't contain Speedsauce x2 and the other one a Medleaf.

But yeah this was fun all the way through and I liked the battle system, and I'm going to keep playing to see if I can find the extras.

MIDI Making

I was actually kinda hoping someone would go into a little more detail in terms of soundfonts. I'm sure there are some other things out there besides GPO (and yeah I know GPO isn't technically soundfonts, either), but I don't know what they are and I'd kinda like to get a list of what else people actually use.

Complete Symphonic Suite: U.S.G. ~A New Beginning~

I listened to it and I didn't really want to say anything bad, but I guess I should say something. The point I want to make though is that I can't really see this soundtrack going well with USG. Well, the non-battle stuff sure. Chatting, Llefara, and War Room are pretty good.

But USG is a shooter and it's pretty intense. So the music needs to echo that and really get the player pumped, and none of these songs really DO that. I mean I really like Bullet Hell and can see it working all right for regular stage music, but there's nothing here that works for boss music, and Bullet Hell isn't as energetic as it could be, either.

A lot of the songs start with a building intro and I expect them to go somewhere but they never really get up to the level of energy I expect. I mean it feels cheap to say this, but for a game as intense as USG I expect heavier drums and a more techno feel.

As lame as it sounds, I just think your music is too sophisticated for a fast-paced reflex game like USG.

Granted. You're sent back in time to ancient Persia, where you become an elite soldier. You're pretty much a badass, but ultimately you still die in battle.

I wish I could savestate life.

One of the other guys here is apparently the webmaster for Smogon or something. A few weeks ago he was complaining about having to set up new servers. I just thought that was kinda interesting.
