Single Character RPGs: How Can They Work?

I was going to use 7th Saga as an example, but now that I look at it, that game was pretty terrible as a whole unless you're really into playing RPGs that like to kick your ass.

The original was not as bad. The stat gains in the USA version were half as large as they were in the Japanese version. However, enemies and the other apprentices remained just as strong.
All of which is moot because you can have an ally in 7th Saga.

The entire roguelike genre is centered around catering to the crowd who loves impossible games. They tend to be fair, too.
