Ability idea - Speak with the Dead

I understand LockeZ's POV but I can definitely see this running all the scale to a cute throwaway item that you MAY want to equip when visiting a town's graveyard just to read funny dialogue. I mean, Symphony Of The Night has shoes which make you 1 pixel taller. That's their purpose. It's cute.

However, to make it useful and meaningful without being a built-in ability might be a tricky thing to balance. May be easier in games with equipment hotswaps.

[RMMZ] Healing over the max amount?

To simplify what Marrend said:
there's a function that exists to guarantee HP/MP/TP don't exceed their max values. This function is called periodically. That means that even if you do set HP to 1200/1000, the next time the Refresh function is called (which is probably several times per action) it'll get clamped (limited) to 1000.

There's a Yanfly Tips And Tricks article for Curada, a healing spell that stores overhealing in a variable and automatically heals the target when they get hurt.
It is different, but rather similar, you may want to use that.

[RMMZ] Single use attack boost?

It depends on what your game considers a "physical action" or a "magical action".

Whichever criteria it may use, you'll want a <JS Pre-End Action> section that check if the current action fits that state's erase criteria, then erase it.

This would yield a state that increases your ATK to 300% and is only erased when using an ability that fits the criteria for erasing. This should work for most cases. If it doesn't for you (for example, you have a healing skill that is ATK-based but doesn't fit the criteria for a physical action, and you don't want it to benefit from the 300% ATK buff) then you may want a <JS Pre-Start Action> that only buffs ATK if the physical action criteria passes (which also means it'll be erased at <JS Pre-End Action>

Ah, my bad, I assumed the syntax was right T.T
But indeed, you can in fact use a.hp or b.mat for the formulae! it is in fact the suggested way to go iirc. So your last edit is probably the way to go!

Worth moving a game from VX to MV??

Formula for raising ATK based on HP lost?

The second formula will return this:

ATK Rate = 1 + (2 - (a value between 0 and 1.) )

Assuming your character had 27/100 HP:

ATK Rate = 1 + (2 - 0.27)
ATK Rate = 1 + 1.73
ATK Rate = 2.73. So you'll have 273% ATK if you're at 27% health.

Another scenario, 95/100 HP:

ATK Rate = 1 + (2 - 0.95)
ATK Rate = 1 + 1.05
ATK Rate = 2.05, so you'll have 205% ATK if you're at 95% health.

Basically, it's almost there. IF you want the ATK range to go from 200 to 300% it's perfect. You probably want it to go from 100 to 200, though, which would mean you'd need to change that 2 to a 1.



EDIT: Actually, you probably just want to take off that 1+ part.

<JS ATK Rate: 2 - gameActors.user.hp / gameActors.user.mhp>

This way the rate will be < 200% - (0%~100%) >, meaning it'll always return between 100% and 200% attack depending on HP lost.

RPG Maker Unite - New Engine

This is more like Pixel Game Maker MV releasing between RMMV and RMMZ tho!
This is not a mainline RPG Maker. It's probably an add-on for Unity with a very different goal. Personally, I think it'll be awesome if eventually we get two rpg makers: a simple standalone product intended for beginners, and an extremely powerful interface that communicates with one of the main engines like Unity and Unreal. It's much better for the developers too: Rather than spending resources writing basic stuff like graphcs handling and interfacing, the RPG Maker team can use the amazing tools already built-in in these engines and create on top of that. Movement is already solved on Unity, for example. That means that on launch, Unite could have the biggest range of plugins any rpg maker has ever had: the entire Unity store.

Of course, that depends on the philosophy behind this engine, but this is sooo cool and sooo exciting.

I think MZ still has many healthy years to come.

Yes, it is old. And yes, a lot of old people still use it. But, surprisingly, there are still a lot of people who continue to cling on to it – and I’m not the only one. If you look around the The Screenshot Topic for a while here, you'll still find a plethora of Rm2k3 screenshots and people who still like to use it. True, not as many as before, but there are still signs of life.


Funny how I clicked here from this article and 1. It's still the same screenshot topic, 2. It is rather lively 3. Only 1 out of all of this page's screenshots is not from an RPG Maker 2003 game. (Uh, actually, Fee_Nicks's GORGEOUS game might be not 2k3 either)

Also 4. GORGEOUS. Gorgeous games. Great work, every single one of y'all.

[RMMV] I'm making a game for my daughter

A nice thing about developing a game for a 5 year old child is that there's just so much to it that the child won't be able to immediately absorb and understand. Depending on how it's written, you can create a piece of narrative or an experience that they will be able to revisit and view from another perspective years in the future. Perhaps pick up some nuance about their parents' relationship, or about parenthood itself, that they couldn't at first. It's possibly the greatest gift a parent can give a child. My grandmother was a singer and pianist -- I really wish I had some recordings or some originally written songs of her somewhere to look back at her and "talk" to her in 2021.
