Free RPG Engines?

On the other hand, stuff like Postality Knights XP ver. was clearly an unwarranted outing made against the commercially released version.

As far as I remember, Postalitiy Knights' translation of RMXP was released before EB came out with official word on an english version of RMXP. It's been a while though, so I might be wrong.

Yeah, it's kind of like Mp3s. Nobody cares really if you download and use them.

Say that again after you take a look at the amount of unjustified bullshit the RIAA, MPAA, and similar money-hoarding organizations are giving to BT trackers and the like (read: search engines).

RM2K(3) isn't being brought up in court (worst I've heard is something along the lines of a C&D letter, I think?) because the entire issue is negligible as far as ASCII/Enterbrain care and because it gave them free publicity with the RPG Maker series of programs in the end.

it would have been unconstitutional.

Sorry to be picky, but the word you're looking for is "unlawful" or "illegal"; patents have nothing to do with any country's constitution.

Free RPG Engines?

Incorrect. RPG Maker 95, 2000, and 2003 are all commercial software that you have to buy to use legally. They're like anime fansubs: No one really cares that much about them being available for free, but what you are doing is illegal and if legal technicalities come into the picture you're undoubtedly on the losing end.

Trouble with pictures...

I'm going to take a wild guess and assume you've got that picture being constantly redrawn in a parallel processing event of some sort. Show Picture should only be used once (or in other words, don't make RM2K3 parse that line over and over again) to create a picture, any further necessary manipulation should be done via Move Picture.

Just to make sure the fires keep burning in this thread, the site is going to get to the point where it also won't accept submitted 2k or 2k3 games.

Sad panda is sad. ;_;

As for the hair, I say pony tail. I don't see priestesses sporting pony tails that often.
Okay, be honest: When is the last time you actually saw a priestess AT ALL?????
Most priestesses I've seen in anime and games didn't sport ponytails as far as I remember. If you mean priestess as in actual real-life people who serve the church and stuff I have no clue as I'm non-religious.

I didn't know that there's an RM95 released in the 90's!
This is a pretty good reason why I suggested RM95 be recognized as a game engine on RMN. Most newcomers (the new script-nublets of RMXP and VX) have no clue what RPG Maker 95 even is (let alone its influence on the community today), which is quite a sad story since RM95 began the greater part of the English RM community in so many ways. RM2K may have taken the spotlight and RMXP may have placed its mark by being the first official English translation, but the true pioneer in every sense of the word was RM95.

I don't want any RPG95 games on this site and I refuse to host them.
I think nostalgia is a pretty bad reason to accept RM95 games and support it as an engine =) Gonna have to side with WIP here.
Technically, there's nothing stopping people from submitting RM95 games under the "Custom" tag, but why does RM95 need to be filed under that category when the site in question is called RPGMaker.net, the greater part of the community uses/used RM in one way or another, and owes its existance (along with pretty much all other present-day English RM communities) to RM95? Even Famitsu still recognizes RM95 alongside 2K(3), XP and VX. Something just doesn't add up here. =(

95 is pretty terrible and I don't see why you would defend such a bad program.
Nobody is going to deny that RM95 is an ancient relic compared to our standards today, and I honestly don't think the people who voiced agreement with my suggestion want RM95 for its game-making value. Rather, RM95 deserves recognition for the undeniable influence it's had on all of us all those years ago.

Very few (if not none at all) English RM communities nowadays even recognize or remember RM95, RMN can be unique in that aspect and showcase RPG Maker's long and humble history for all to read up on.

So we were in IRC as usual tonight, and one topic went to another until an idea came up: Why do we not have RPG Maker 95, aka RM95, as a recognized game engine?

We have everything from RM2K to RMVX, and even IG Maker (which incidentally has no submissions) as recognized game engines, so there is no reason to make the circle not complete by not including RM95 which started what is the English RM community. If not for anything else, an honorary recognition would be appropriate since it is even the namesake of this very website.

First ever Windows-based RPG Maker program released by ASCII in 1997.

Description:
RPG Maker 95 is a tile-based point and click engine tailored towards creating SNES-era-like RPGs and was the first to be released in the long-running series of RPG Maker programs for the Windows operating system.

RPG Maker 95 runs in 640x480 resolution with 32x32 pixel tiles and 32x32 sprites using the .BMP image file format limited to a 256 color palette. The default battle system is a frontview system reminiscent of early Dragon Quest games, with invisible player characters and static monster sprites. The engine uses the MIDI file format for music and WAV format for sound effects.

And if this wasn't persuasion enough, here's something that may:
<GreatRedSpirit> I'll submit a game if WIP makes a tag for it

EDIT: Noticed I miss the full-size icon. ;_;

3. changing the layout is not exactly friendly for people who have already spent time working to make their gamepages look good

This is actually quite an interesting predicament, assuming it actually is one. If simple user customization prohibits RMN from changing or trying something new (this topic's issue or otherwise), then the extent to which user customization can go should be reassessed.

User customizations are a great way to make website you frequent feel more at home, but they shouldn't come at the cost of locking down RMN's future.

A or B (spriting question)

and why the hell would anyone who can't fly wear a cape?
A cloak/cape can serve a miriad of purposes, especially during travel. Such purposes include shielding yourself, keeping yourself warm, and wrapping things in said cloak/cape. As such, I can't help but ask why she wouldn't wear a cloak/cape if she's on a long, arduous journey and had the choice.

As for the hair, I say pony tail. I don't see priestesses sporting pony tails that often.
