Start with story or start with world?

author=Trihan
I'd still say the world comes before the characters. Try to do things in the order creation would actually make them in, basically. The world was there before the characters, and the characters were there before there could be a story.

What I'm saying is more that as you develop the characters, what the world will be often becomes much clearer. Rather than diving in with the idea of creating a world, using characters to spawn ideas of a world for them tends to work better for me. If you can make a whole world and lore from scratch without just copying a bunch of other sources, then all to that method then.

Start with story or start with world?

How about characters? Make good characters, use them to determine how your world will be, then use both of those to determine how the story goes.

What do you like in a turn based battle system?

I like strategy that doesn't feel like its a puzzle where only one or two pieces fits the hole. My general approach on strategy is to give the player a bunch of options (none of which are required to win), a number of variables to consider, and a great enough challenge (on bosses at least) that at a decent level, teamwork among the party is key in order to make your battling effective enough to win. Strategy is at its best when you are putting together a puzzle of your own design and find it turns out great.

"Where it should be at."

But that was exactly my point. The clunky bar center needed to be fixed. Which is what I finally managed when someone pointed it out.

Look here.

I made a conscious decision where I want the people's attention to go. The bar stand was distracting from that. Now it's gone, since the center of attention is different from what you'd normally draw your attention to (stop looking there dummy! :slaps theo: ) you immediately decide it's "bad."

To enjoy the scene I don't want people flocking straight to the center "because that's where all the action is" I want them actually talking to all the customers.

Honestly, the one you posted without the jarringly distracting amazon still brought my attention to the group of people. Why? Because there is a big group of people surrounding a table with no other large group of people in the room. Want to enhance that effect? Then take out some of the other people so that the big group of people is even more distinct.

The one with the amazon brought your eyes there, but distracted it from the group. Its looks so out of place because of the different styles you don't focus on the group, but her. It nulled and voided the idea that your attention should be on the patrons.

You're simply going way out of the way to bring attention to a situation. Its like if you animated a human character into a cartoony design in a romantic comedy movie just to bring attention to that person is exiting the room quietly. Is your attention on that character? Yeah, but it sure isn't on the point that he's trying to exit the room quietly.

Its bad design because it looks bad.

Using different styles (rather than character design, like the KH example) is often jarring and forces your attention away from what it should be at. No? It takes away from your ability to provide quality presentation and storytelling by putting people in a scenario where they are not doing what they need to in order to properly enjoy the scene or such. That alone makes it bad design.

Its a simple concept in the end

Does anyone here live in a trailer?

No, never. I don't see much upside to it. Might be okay if it could get plumbing.

I was hoping for a Devil Fruit power, lol. What I had in mind was increasing the body's electricity and using it to create a magnetic field around the character that he could manipulate. That character then could proceed to use that magnetic field for a variety of techniques. Specifically, I was thinking the ability to fight with wield a number of swords beyond without even needing to use his hands (I like swords...)

The lengths don't really bother me. I guess the next question would be how often is that length expected? If its not absolutely mind boggling amount, I think it'd be worth a try, at the very least. Looking at how often new posts come in each thread, I'm doubting it'd be near the point of being way too daunting. After my exams finish up this week, I'll have plenty of free time for the summer anyways.

That's what I mean by headache... There's already a canon DF user with that ability. You'd have to review all the fruits to make sure you're not copying. Even something similar would be denied by a mod.

Hmm... You don't say? Without that I'm much less motivated to try it. Eh, good luck to you all. I think I'll try RPing on a day when I can more do it to my own desires.

One Piece Role-Play

I'm interested.

I watched One Piece for a while in the past. I think I got through the first hundred or two hundred episodes before I moved on at the time (I realize there are A LOT more). Though, admittedly, that was a while ago.

What I don't have experience is would be RPs. Its something thats peeked my interest before, but I've never done it. What would it require of me to do besides making a character and joining the forum? I assume nothing too excessive?

What are you thinking about? (game development edition)

You know what really becomes a big job when you are making a battle system from scratch? Balancing. Actually everything does, but that's for another day.
