Did anyone else thing that Zero Suit Samus was kind of a lame idea? The stealth sequence in Zero Mission did not inspire me to want to play as her in any other format.

You could stun enemies! Briefly!

Reviewing

I don't think there should be site staff devoted to reviewing games. If they don't enjoy writing up evaluations of every game they try, than there's certainly no point in distracting them from more pressing duties they can attend to. If they DO enjoy it, they're gonna review games even if they don't 'have' to. There's no way that the staff is going to be able to play through every single game that gets fed through here.

Having a 'Spot Light' to shine on interesting games has its appeal, I'll admit. You can maybe acknowledge people who write insightful and useful reviews by giving them the ability to spotlight exceptional games, but having a whole staff regiment devoted to reviewing games just seems to deflate the value of reviews from 'non-staff.'

RPGS... you've beaten

FF Legends used a 'Disposable weapons' system. Every weapon had a limited number of uses before it broke, so managing your resources so that you always had enough cash to buy weaponry was a major part of the game balance.

It was also the main reason I got rid of the game. I hear the sequals are better, though, but I've never bothered to check them out.

I haven't tried Riviera, but I expect that it's a lot more reasonable with its depletable weapons.

I like how Burning Grail managed disposable weapons. It only encouraged exploration.

Tutorial: Lol no RTP. What to do?

Double posting for attention, sorry.

I should point out that my test computer, which is fairly new, needed the Harmony.dll file, so I would recommend amending the article to mention sticking that file in there just to be safe.

Brickroad: This version of Mercenary ought to be RTP independent now, if you're still willing to give the game a go.

Thanks again.

Incidentally, I'd like to know how Despain made Sandfall RTP independant, if only because I would REALLY like to be able to distribute Corporal Buggy Bear (a game of which I am much more proud of than Mercenary) without telling people to download the untranslated RTP installer. (Or RPG Maker XP itself!)

If he doesn't notice this thread I'll just pester him in PM to hope and uncover his arcane secrets.

Tutorial: Lol no RTP. What to do?

Not until AFTER reading this thread, oddly. But I appreciate the interest! I will see what I can do.

Odin Sphere

I picked up Odin Sphere yesterday.

It seems completely outrageous that I can adjust to these production through the roof production values. I keep feeling like I ought to just pause the game to soak up the beauty of each frame.

The controls are a little unwieldly, mainly because it calls for tactical fighting since you can't just button mash. I'm not sure how the game expects me to fight precisely. I keep wanting to use the block command, but it's easy to get caught up in a combo and just get smacked before you have a chance to.

The mini-bosses can be freaking ridiculous. There was a fight where you had to take on two beserkers at the same time, I only managed to win that because I'd concocted a vial of toxin before the fight. Friggin' General Brigan was a pain in the butt to dispatch. The challenge is pretty nice, really, but I keep wondering if the engine is slightly clunky or if I'm just not playing right.

Tutorial: Lol no RTP. What to do?

I actually needed to know how to kill RTP dependency. Thanks!

Hmm, not too much I guess...

Final Fantasy 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, MQ
Chrono Trigger
Rudra No Hihou
Secret of Mana
Soul Blazer
Might and Magic 6, 7, 8
Suikoden 1, 2
Diablo 1, 2
Fallout 1, 2
Planescape Torment

...and some others that I can't remember at the moment.

eNSO, you didn't play through FF Legends or Riveria? I figured those sorts of games are what inspired Burning Grail's engine.

Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure (more times than I should probably admit)

Dude. Rhapsody is a pretty awesome. It's low stress, wacky, and lacks the pretentiousness that makes most RPGs annoying. The production values are a little shoddy, but its simplistic, to the point design made it more fun than burdensome. The fact that the characters burst into song every so often is kind of irritating, though. (Although Evil Queen was a nice ditty.)

Help Desk For Newbies

Personally, I was never overly fond of tutorials.

I find the most effective learning tool is to download other people's work and dissect them.

You can see ingame what those functions DO and then look at the events to see how they did it. I've learned more by doing this than I've picked up from tutorials.

Feedback for new site genre of games

A map that looks nice does not necessarily function well, and one may not spend as much time fiddling with set pieces if the player is just gonna run pass them. If you're gonna sit and watch something for minutes on end, it's good when it looks nice.
