Indie games that have impacted you

I was really bowled over by the first RPG Maker game I tried. In retrospect, though, the game wasn't at all remarkable and nearly unplayable. I had no contrast to the competent RM games yet.

There was still the whole 'Whoa, they MADE this?' sensation followed by my own flailing attempts to make my own game with popsicle sticks, construction paper, paper clips, RTP graphics, glue, and safety scissors.

A Couple Things in the Works

Will we eventually be able to exchange our Maker Points for ponies?

The RMN Epic Forum Story

Course that John Deere weren't as nice as what that varmint Angus Jackson were drivin'. Not all of us were pullin' in mud farm money.

Starin' down my rival with mah coldest glare, I spat and gave 'em the rudest insult I could think of!

"Be prepared to be shown what for, my good man!"

The story planning process

What about visual narrative?

RPG Maker games are very limited in terms of visuals, but it's still possible to use these visuals to tell part of the story.

I subscribe to the idea that it is better to show, rather than explain, your world and story. This is easier said than done, and dialogue tends to be much more explicit in explaining things. But I do get tired of scenes where the characters drop everything for a long winded explanation of something. (Thinly veiled world building.)

I do agree that good dialogue is CRUCIAL to a really enjoyable RM game. Personally, though, My patience for sitting through lousy gameplay has dwindled over the years. The story has REALLY got to be intriguing to be worth suffering for. Even then, I might as well cheat and use the editor to give every character max stats if it's just going to a slog anyway.

Etrian Odyssey

I intend to get the game once I acquire the DS I have been promised.

If only because I respect any game that inspires this kind of nonsense.

Drawing your own maps in an old school dungeon crawl is an idea I can get behind.

FIXED: Broken Downloads

Our glorious tribal chiefs are probably already aware of this, but the download game links on the site are all dead.

DEAD. Erm.

Irregardless, I would suggest that everyone refrain from dusting off their 'The End is Nigh' signs for the time being. I'm sure the matter will be addressed in a calm and orderly fashion just as soon as the panic lights stop flashing.

We Did It First screenshot thread

If I ever get my own cave prison, I'm totally going to deck it out with blue carpet too.

I'd have to agree with WIP. Looks great otherwise.

Real-Time Strategy RPG Combat

It's nice that the RPG industry is experimenting, though I really haven't played an RPG/RTS hybrid that I like yet.

The tension of Real Time Strategy is both a good and bad thing. It can make things more dynamic, but it also can be more taxing if you do not have time to react. Most often AI for team mates in RPGs is brain dead.If you are truly able to micromanage a group well, than it's liable to be pretty intense though.

I will have to try more RPG games that utilize RTS elements before really reaching a verdict.

Nudity.

Oh. I believe he's played the trump card.

On the subject of learning RGSS

How competent are you with programming? Specifically: variables, functions, classes, objects, parameters.

Understanding Ruby is one thing in and of itself. To add to that, you have to understand how RGSS works (and no one really wants to do that, trust me, it's gross).

Let me put it this way: I can capable of making mini-games using RPG Maker's event editor. I am adept at the event editor, but never tried anything crazy like doing a CBS with it.

The only computer language I know is some basic HTML. Everything else is moon-man babble to me.

RGSS is kind of massively intimidating! Shamefully, the reason I was so attracted to RPG Maker engines in the first place was the lack of real coding, but I do imagine that I can make my games more attractive by learning how to use RGSS. I might be biting off more than I can chew, though.
