What are you thinking about? (game development edition)

I haven't been super active with making games, but there's this one pokemon-like robot battling game/game series (now simply called N series) idea that I keep coming back developing it incrementally step by step (always without any clear plan about what to do next it seems...) There were other smaller projects also that I tried but I made nothing playable except a small Pong like game.

I think I scrap all the other ideas in favor of turning this N series into proper game whenever I have time and motivation to do it during passing weeks. Earlier this year I made a simplified copy of the pokemon battle system using python and now I changed it towards more distinct system of it's own calling it N Duel Demo. Now I plan to add features until it's complete battle system of it's own, but for now it's still at super basic level...

Summoner of Sounds

Thank you for your kind words Happy, that was really nice to hear ^^ Thanks Fulminis-ictus for your feedback also.

Summoner of Sounds

This is my final entry for this event. I wished I had some more time to tweak it, but time is running out and furthermore the newest version of LMMS fails to export it properly... so here it is.

Battle theme: "Waves of enemy hordes"

It's in ogg format and I added the loop points so it should loop properly in RPG Maker. Who ever can count the beats on the first try gets a cookie ;)

Summoner of Sounds

A battle theme? \o/ I just recently started making one and I've put few hours into making it and it's like 50%~75% ready. I will definitely submit here when it's finished. Battle themes are so my favourite kind of video game music...

Summoner of Sounds

Here's my latest entry.

I've changed the structure of the piece several times and I noticed that the snare sound is kind of loud, but time is running out so I submit this one as it is right now, but I'm kind of fond of it so I probably go back and tweak it some more later.

This is kind of 8-bit in the sense that I used only simple waveforms and noise for all the sounds, except that I added overdrive to the sine wave to make that guitar like sound. There's also no bass so I've been experimenting a bit here.

Few rpg battle themes I made; asking advice and critisism for better music

Hi, I'm a composer, but not professional and even if I never will be, I would like to have my music as professional sounding as possible Therefore I would like have any tips or advice from you on making rpg battle themes.

Battle themes are something I would like to specialise in as battling is the aspect I like in the RPGs the most. Also, as far as I can see, considerable ammount of time in these kind of games goes to battles and there's usually only few battle themes in game so I think it's important that battle themes are top-notch when compared to the rest of the soundtrack.

Here's the best battle themes (at least in my mind) that I've made so far - please comment them somehow. Although I'm fairly satisfied to these themes, I still want progress further for I know there's HUGE room for improvement. Escpecially I'm aware that my mixing skills - using EQ, reverb, etc. - is almost non-existant so I'm very interested to hear how to mix this kind of music. And if you think they suck then please be brutally honest about it, but more than that tell what is exactly wrong with them and if you could tell how to fix the problems, then it would be even better ^^

*Chrono Trigger inspired battle theme*
Here I got the inspiration from the normal battle theme escpecially for the bass, but I tried to add more melodies.

*Pokemon Gym leader battle inspired battle theme*
Here I took elements from pokemon series - mainly from gym leader battle themes - and put them together in a way that would make it's own unique track. This more like boss battle than normal battle theme IMO.

*Final Fantasy inspired battle theme*
If you're played FF VIII, you probably know exactly from which battle theme the inspiration came for this one. I think the synth ostinato/riff here is too similar to the original, but I didn't made it that way consciously.

*Tales of Symphonia inspired battle theme*
Here I tried to took some of the structure and instruments from "Final Destianation", the final battle theme of the game and used them to make final battle -esque battle theme of my own. I also took some ideas from champion battle themes from pokemon series.

Although these are all inspired from existing games and music they are not meant to sound exactly like originals; I just took some ideas and put them together with new melodies in a way permitted by my own style and abilities.

So tell what you think. Even if you yourself don't know the technical details on how to make music, you could still tell your ideas: does this fit for a RPG game, what good and possibly obscure RPG battle themes there are out there from where to get ideas and so fort.

ResidentEcruteak - Desert Trek

Yeah that's definitely in the middle eastern/Arabic region area, no missing it. I'm not feeling this one too much though, it comes across as quite strident. I can't see it as a desert theme, though of course deserts can be harsh as this piece is, but it almost needs a softening melody applied to it, something to mimic the endless wind that deserts have. Something that rises and falls and weaves through the heavy instrumentation you've got going.

Thanks for the input; I was already having some ideas how to make this better, but you gave some more ideas. Strident? Yes, I think I understand what you mean; it's the ney flutes that are causing it. Thing is when making making music for considerable ammount of time at one time you kind of get used to harshness if there's any; only after I had a break and came back to this I noticed that it's little bit too harsh. I might upload an updated version of this later... but if this is not a desert theme, then what could it be?

Summoner of Sounds

There has been a small hiatus for me; there were other things that got my attention, but I'm back for now...

I saw that there was still time to submit something for this chapter and decided that I want to do something quickly for it. Then I found some oud and ney instruments from libraries of a free version of Kontakt 5 I have on my computer and remembered that there is something called arabic scale.

I put them together and after 2 hours of work out came this minimalistic track: "Desert Trek"

Although it's meant to be for a desert level of a video game I hope you don't find it too dry ^_^

I am write now, yes?

Yes. Team would be a great thing to have. There's just the problem - on this site at least - that people don't want to make a team with you if you're just a new guy and they don't know you. Result is you have to make your first games all by yourself in order to show that you can actually accomplish something and even after that you have hard time getting people interested about your game. So it seems at least.

Whatchu Workin' On? Tell us!

Got an idea for the title screen music for my first game and did a rough sketch for the music quickly in musescore. Here's the result in midi.

Making the title screen music or somekind of main theme for the game helps me to focus on the project as I can project all my goals and hopes pertaining to the game project into a single piece of music so I try to make that very early. Next I will polish the music and desing one of the characters and write some dialogue for it.
