Runic Cipher

I just made a new blog post. Yes, I'm still alive and well. Just need to finish this huge city I've been working on, and then the next beta release will be ready. Going to be more upfront about this now.

[RM2K3] Are there any good free resource sites left for Rm2k3?

Things definitely aren't like they used to. You can still try hunting down the few Angelfire and Tripod Web sites in existence (where they lay to rest), as well as putting the Wayback Machine to good use (if you know a URL).

There's also RPGMaker 2003 Archive, which I'd highly recommend bookmarking. I was able to get very specific utilities that I couldn't find anywhere when I wanted to come back to gam mak.

1 Game a Day / 1 Month

That's a highly admirable feat you got going for yourself. I've been into this for almost twenty years, yet I still can't finish one game (yet). ;_;

Good luck!

Triumphant Return

Thanks for the greetings, guys. Good to be back.

Sadly, I must admit that it's been months since I tried resubmitting my game (still "pending"). I made sure to add more details and give the staff what they wanted. Unfortunately, a lot has changed ever since I first submitted it here.

My plan is to issue updates to an offsite blog, although this community is an invaluable resource in terms of testers, feedback, and so on. Perhaps I'll start a thread and just take it from there. At this point, I just want to move forward with this project and get it done, after ten years of goofing around. I could've given up early on and just found something else entirely, but I'd rather see to it that all that time and effort didn't go to waste.

By the way, since I don't use Windows anymore (GNU/Linux FTW!), Wine has really improved to the point where I don't have to fight with (as much) bugs anymore, at least surface-level areas. That's another reason I'm still working on the project. I can also keep up with my writer by e-mail.

Just thought I'd let everyone know what's current.

I will be working on that aforementioned blog to get the ball rolling again. Once again, I can't thank you guys enough for still remembering this project. I'll see about sending some of you guys the pre-release beta (only once this chapter is complete, since this city I'm working on is a lot of stuff to work with, and in my very limited free time nowadays).

Triumphant Return

Hey, everyone. I'm sure you remember me from about a decade ago. I've just been really busy with personal stuff, but I'm still proceeding forward with the project. Currently mapping out a huge, medieval-themed city (Regindo), and it's unfortunately still going to take a bit more time. It's a very meticulous effort, but I've got it down to a point where I can structure the buildings and complement their surroundings with neat architectures. The project is currently pending approval, so stay tuned.

What I like about making these RPGs is that anyone can open them (not all, but most) and study the code or method, hopefully improving their own works. I'm still steadfast in keeping Runic Cipher a freely available game, as I'm doing this stuff just for fun. My only regret is that personal setbacks since five years ago really screwed up with my productivity, but things are much better now. I'm a lot more realistic about what I want to achieve with this project. I'm still in touch with my writer, although he personally isn't a forum person.

[RM2K3] Running RPG_RT.exe on Linux (Wine)

Another place to ask would be rpgmakerweb's technical support forum, it may not be the best place to ask this question, but there's usually more people involved there, trying to solve compatibility issues.

Thanks for the tip. I'll do some further digging.

Hey. Shame that EasyRPG Player has too many bugs to be usable for you but we can maybe still help with your Wine problems.

One of our devs wrote a guide in our blog about configuring Wine for RPG_RT. Maybe it helps you.

I've already seen that one before. In fact, it refers to the very first source that I included as part of my research. Fonts are just fine, as installing the old font patch did the trick, but no matter what I do with the MIDI side, I can't get any sound, yet MP3s work.

If I knew how and where to configure EasyRPG Player to my advantage, I'd probably switch to it for good. Strangely, the vanilla RPG_RT.exe is my best bet for now, either ran flawlessly on Windows or with delayed DBS processes in Wine. I don't want to go back to Windows at all, but I'm probably going to have to get into the VM side of things.

For midi, you need to open a gate. Write timidity -iA in your console before running any software using midi. There's also a way to make it permanent but it might mess up other audio.

It didn't work for me at all.

Thanks, though. I'm just glad that the editor itself works fine.

[RM2K3] Running RPG_RT.exe on Linux (Wine)

I've switched to GNU/Linux permanently, and was wondering on ways that could help out with making my game run as smoothly as possible.

I'm using the default build, but to be specific, RPG Tsukuru 2003 (version 1.08, translated by RPG Advocate). I've tried my best to get the hang of open-source alternatives such as EasyRPG Player, but the lack of easy flexibility has really discouraged me. It has a specific DBS, my characters are placed a different way in battle, common events within the DBS do not function normally, the glyphs (symbols) are not my customized set, and the font is different from what I'm used to. The Windows version did not work with Wine.

Since I did specify that I'm using the RPG Advocate version, I'm using Wine to have both the editor and the player run. For the most part, the editor works just fine, although loading up the database section takes a few seconds for me. I have more of an issue with the player, technically the file RPG_RT.exe. It currently doesn't give me any display errors when expanded, but the DBS is so ridiculously laggy, and at random intervals. It takes almost four seconds to process an attack, and the transition into battle also takes a while. I've tested with a vanilla project, and the DBS loaded just fine. For some reason, Wine is not able to handle a game made with a near-two-decade-old program. Is there any reason why it's lagging on my part? I actually did a quick vanilla Windows 7 test, and things were just fine. I'm just not sure where to look or what to configure, since information on getting any RPG Maker to run smoothly on non-Windows OS installations is quite scarce.

Also, through Wine, MIDI playback isn't working, despite installing a couple of DLLs in an attempt to circumvent that. MP3s and WAVs play, however. Would it be wiser to just convert to OGG?

These were the only helpful sources, but they didn't really solve my issues up above:
Mind you, I'm still pretty new to Linux, but I've been working on getting more acquainted with the kernel.

Any help with this would be great.

Haha, that's awesome...

I'm happy you're liking this idea. Expect more of these types of characters later on in the game. :)
