Participation in the Game Making Community

I don't make shit , and I don't play as many RM games as some of you do, but I do play a lot of games, and . Please try not to flame me =(

It's basically the thing that is ALWAYS posted in these threads:

- Whether how deep or different your game is, it's going to be considered ''JRPG" unless you somehow manage to use XP/VX to create Fallout (Not going to happen). I'm thinking that this site's design is too mature-looking to attract players in their droves. But it works great as a developing community. Ideally, a sister play-orientated site would have the JRPG aesthetic. Big colours. Logos. It would be great if faux box art icons could be created. As a gamer, seeing a list of

Lore: Greckl's Quest
Ultimate XIDIA
Of Swords and Chaos
etc

is not inspiring at all. Most of the games here look bland and interchangeable. The more unique ones are drowned out by all the interchangeable ones. A perfect Indie RPG site would have poster games (As kentona suggested). Games that are both attractive from an aesthetic AND a mechanic standpoint. These would be the main attractions of the site, and most of the 'casually-created' games would be far less obvious. There needs to be a bit of elitism. This can only happen if there are prolific developers (Which I won't/can't be), who can make high quality short games.

- I like Feldschlacht's enthusiasm, and he must be a very nice person to invest his own time into helping amateur RPG creators achieve their (in most cases, nonexistent) potential. I think I'd have that attitude too, if I was a rich, accomplished game designer and wanted to give something back to the community. As a random, selfish guy on the internet I can't be as enthusiastic, unfortunately.

- RPG Maker communities are *not* filled with people who aspire to be developers. I believe that most members are Enterbrain's target audience, the 15 yo guys that have a brainwave (or brainfart) during a session of Final Fantasy XY and want to make something 'just as cool.' There's nothing wrong with this, but that's why trying to 'legitimise' the community is difficult, or maybe futile.

- There are ways to get round not being a graphics guy. If you want to use rips, there are HUNDREDS of JRPGs that haven't been localised. Just a glimpse at Gamefaqs will tell you that. I think I'll post a thread right now with screenshots of some of these RPGs, see if it inspires anyone.

- Another way to get round this is offering something different. The most popular 'indie JRPGs' games outside the community? Yume Nikki. Columbine RPG. Barkley. What's funny is that the last two, especially Columbine RPG, aren't particularly attractive.

- Another popular RPG Maker game: There's this one youtube video of a crap but weird Japanese RTP RM2K3 game in which you do nothing but fight little Shakugan no Shana lolis on one map (And they make little weird loli screams when you kill them). The last boss is Shana, but instead of attacking her, you can choose to attack her bra or knickers. Yeah =/ The game got 1,000000 views.

- Maybe hold a game making drive with a certain TARGET in mind? As opposed to release demo of 64647743 hour RPG? Community projects are also underrated. But people tend to do the 'Make Big Open World With Everyone's Things Inside It' community projects.

Haha. Welcome to the English language, dude. Would you like to park on my driveway? = )

It's not the same thing. At least driveway/parkway *mean* something when you break them up/look at the origin.

My point is that the term gameplay is used to describe how enjoyable the game is overall, so it doesn't make sense if you're breaking a game into categories and list 'gameplay' as one of them, especially when graphics and audio in combination with the game mechanics can determine how enjoyable the experience. And more importantly, game mechanics is clearly the superior term because it *clearly* refers to the framework of a game.

If, say, Chrono Trigger was just purely its 'gameplay' as a lot of you use it, then it wouldn't be half the game it is.
