I'm actually against anything that brings down oil prices too much in principle just because it encourages us to continue using an inherently unsustainable and unsafe fuel source, and the economic hardship could drive innovation.
Besides, Him, it's crazy to say that oil consumption is set to decrease when China hasn't hit its peak usage yet. China's probably going to be on an order of three times as bad as America has been when it comes to oil usage.
Which means we need to drill it so they don't. We have much better environmental standards than China will ever have.

Naming your characters
author=demondestiny link=topic=1644.msg27616#msg27616 date=1219146711Just as a note, it's generally a bad idea to go with primarily Japanese names on your characters unless you're actually making the game in Japanese or the setting itself either is Japan, or is heavily based on Japan. It's jarring, especially if you don't speak Japanese and end up giving characters names that break suspension of disbelief for people who actually speak Japanese (or even just know enough Japanese) because it doesn't work as a name.
Naming Characters actually comes very easy to me. Since i like to play a lot of games such as Final Fantasy and Valkyrie Profiles i usually go for more japanese names. Sazuka, Iris, Shogan, Vain. Those are quite common names that i like to use in my games.
And it just screams "otaku." Nothing wrong with being an otaku, but you don't want to beat people about the face with it either.

I didn't hear back so I just went ahead and made a character since I figured tomorrow would be too late for you to go over my sheet.

GRS--are you still playing a Fighter? If I join as PC, I'd like to know what roles aren't filled in the party yet.
Truth or Happiness?
NPC Dialogue.
author=Feldschlacht IV link=topic=1691.msg27513#msg27513 date=1219027972Just as an aside, I have been in rooms in real life where you could have either of those conversations simply by turning your chair around.author=Erave link=topic=1691.msg27500#msg27500 date=1219022361author=Feldschlacht IV link=topic=1691.msg27456#msg27456 date=1218942164
Uh, one lesson I learned with NPC dialogue is to be consistent. I'm playing Xenogears, and even though it's one of my favorite RPG's, the NPC dialogue frequently wavers from people being very realistic or informative, to straight up spewing nonsense.
What does consistency mean? Not everyone is going to say the same thing. Or even same type of things.
Even when one NPC is talking about the ascension of God, the folly of man, Deus, and the the war of God vs. Man, and the NPC in the same room is going BLAAERGDFHH I'M SO DRUNK.
Not...really consistent.
NPC Dialogue.
On the game I'm working on, my plan is just to basically eliminate the traditional townie-NPC altogether. I've made the world much smaller so that basically everything takes place in the same city (I'm taking a page from Radiata Stories), and just coming up with a stable of characters with names, backstories, personalities, what have you. They are NPCs, but they're not the nameless decorative NPCs that appear in most games. Dialogue is a lot easier to write for characters than it is for props.
It seems to me that the biggest problem with NPC Dialogue in general is the compulsion to have those decorative NPCs (because a city has to have people in it) and come up with stuff for them to say. Even if you don't take my path, I think a lot of it can be dealt with by doing things like Final Fantasy XII, where you just can't talk to most NPCs, so the only ones that you have to write dialogue for are the ones that actually have something worth saying.

Sorry I missed it guys. A minor domestic crisis came up Friday night and I spent more or less the whole night (and next day) on it. Nick--yeah, more power to you on the running of your own thing. Actually, considering how often I'm having things come up, I was thinking it might be a good idea to start grooming a different DM anyway (rather than trying to change the schedule necessarily), so if you're interested in making it a full time gig, I might just drop out as a DM and become a part-time player--I don't think school starting up is going to make my schedule any less hectic, and I'm not getting as much prep time as I feel comfortable with in a week anyway.
