An FFX thread for you schmucks
-_- To clear things up:
First, they release a game in Japan. Then they release the game in the US, with bug fixes and sometimes additional features. Then they release the game AGAIN in Japan, with more bug fixes and more additional features--this last one is the International Version. They don't release the International version in America and Europe, generally speaking, because they assume Americans and Europeans aren't as willing to blow money on a game that they've already got. Generally speaking, they're right.
The International Versions do tend to be at least partially in English, though. The voice acting in FF12 IZJS was in English, for example, and I believe FFX had the option for the menus to be in English as well.
They do these for basically every numbered Final Fantasy game, as well as a few of the spinoffs. Kingdom Hearts gets 'em, too--you've probably heard of KHII: Final Mix. Because part of it's getting localized (the PS2 remake of Chain of Memories).
Also, the International Versions tend to be the ones that get released to the greater Asian market, which explains the existence of PAL versions that never hit the streets in the western world.
As for the topic at hand....at first I really didn't like FFX, but after I played through it a second time, I realized that it's really a lot better than I gave it credit for. It's not the most amazing game ever, but it's pretty competent and has a lot of fun side quests, and some fairly well done character arcs.
I didn't actually care for the opening, though, at least the in media res part. It seemed melodramatic and too on-the-nose. And I just don't know if in media res works as well in video games as it does in movies or books, for the same reason I'm not a big fan of extended flashbacks in games.
Now the bit in Tidus's Zanarkand was pretty good, other than the music for the Blitzball game.

The end of cheap oil. How will you adapt?
author=Natook link=topic=1281.msg19450#msg19450 date=1212989088While I was just making a joke, hippies will be the first to tell you that hemp has all sorts of legitimate uses. But then hemp and pot aren't quite the same thing, and it'd be pretty difficult to get high from smoking industrial hemp in the first place.author=warmadii link=topic=1281.msg19448#msg19448 date=1212986194
hmm there running things off of pot? how that work? or you mean there smoking it? lol
He definitely means smoking it. Even if they made a car that could run off of pot, they'd smoke it instead of driving... Or you know, if they were really creative they'd put the exhaust pipe INSIDE the vehicle. But I seriously doubt that'd make it very far in the legal world.
And it actually can be used as fuel. It's apparently more efficient than corn as biofuel.
Another 40/40 from Famitsu, this time, Metal Gear Solid 4
I like how the advertisement for MGS 4 is made out to be just like a movie trailer, down to the "In a world..." voice over. I haven't played much of the MGS saga, but from what I've seen, it's very appropriate.
See, this is a subtle implication that Metal Gear games are more like movies than video games! It is an observation that I must be the first person to have pointed out. Ha ha!

author=warmadii link=topic=1281.msg19364#msg19364 date=1212937982Most are too classy to make a big deal about this, but from what I've observed of my fellow art students, 99% of art students have already switched to alcohol for most of their power.
say we should all just sccrew the oil and switch to alcohol or vegies or something...
Alcohol and pot.

Finding more oil isn't anything more than applying duct tape to a crumbling bridge. It'll keep us going a bit longer, but the system is going to fail at some point in the near future no matter what we do.
We really need to be putting all of our efforts (or at least a great majority of them) into finding something else. If we spent half the money on increasing the efficiency of solar panels that we do on finding more oil, we'd probably have more or less as much free energy as we need (at least until we start using enough energy to need a Dyson Sphere, and the solar panels are a good start on that project anyway).
We're throwing a bit of money behind alternative energy sources, I know, but not enough. And even as much as we are doing, I can just about guarantee you that the oil companies aren't going to allow the infrastructure to support alternative energy sources to develop until they've milked everything they can out of us. They'll buy the patent on every energy-cell-fueling-apparatus and solar-to-DC converter that they can get their hands on and sit on the patent until it suits them.
Like they did with the electric car.
The thing that really concerns me about oil prices going up is plastic. Plastic's made from petroleum, isn't it? Do we have alternative sources for that?

Obama is the democratic Nominee. Hurray.
Yeah, and generally speaking, those 600,000 are the 65 year-olds-and-higher that make up 80% of the people who bother to vote any given election. The other 20% are college professors, but not students, except maybe the heads of the SGA.
The real question here is: are Obama's fans big enough fans to get off their asses in November? McCain's are--old people love to vote.

High Power=Low Tier?
author=Feldschlacht IV link=topic=1189.msg19233#msg19233 date=1212801323For the most part, no. But the voice acting is.
Is the International Version even in English?
High Power=Low Tier?
author=S. F. LaValle link=topic=1189.msg19115#msg19115 date=1212719939Or you can do like Shadowtext, in all his weeaboo-y goodness, and play the International Version that doesn't give you a choice: you HAVE to play an enforced class system (or play with no class, which means no license board)! You do get to choose which character is which class, though, so it's not like you have to use Basch if you want a good swordsman or anything.
Now that I think on it, there seems to be a balance. You could give every character every ability, and the reason I think this works in many games is because it allows players to use the characters *they* like. FFXII is a bonus; you can not only play the characters you like most, but you can also, for the benefit of people like Craze, choose a "class" and force it on a character of your choice, and it's as easy as a change of gear and learning specific licenses.
Square-enix.. No more creative games!
author=Blitzen link=topic=1226.msg18987#msg18987 date=1212639377Interesting. My experience was the exact opposite.author=Sir Darkenham, The Black Knight link=topic=1226.msg18474#msg18474 date=1212271121
-FF12 becomes a completely different game that it might as well be FF:KOTOR?
Dude, never compare these two games ever again. KOTOR was stellarEpic and FFXII was a snoozefest supreme.
Final Fantasy IV (DS)
author=Sir Robert the Bruce, Keeper of the Crown link=topic=438.msg18952#msg18952 date=1212623654Generally reviewers base graphics scores on the capabilities of the platform, not the capabilities of other platforms that the reader could've bought seeing as it's fairly likely that two games on separate platforms aren't really competing with one another.
It's fair to compare graphics on two handhelds of the same generation. It's fair to point out gameplay (where Crisis Core fell on its face).
It's also fair to compare graphics between the PS3/360/Wii. Nintendo has made some hardware decisions and they have to be judged by that. They made a conscience decision not to go for the graphic whores, but that doesn't remove that as a review category. However, developers can also make use of things like the dual screens, stylus, waggle, pointing and other forms of control immersion on these platforms where they are lacking on other systems.
Also, in regards to the earlier question about FF4: The After, it's for Cell Phones in Japan. I haven't heard anything about a port (it's an episodic game, so if they do port it it would probably be after all the episodes had run), but I wouldn't be surprised if they did a quick spit-and-polish and threw it on DS. There's basically no chance of the US getting the cell phone version, though--there's no market here.
