Hrm...Some Suggestions For An RPG.

author=Ephiam link=topic=1070.msg15187#msg15187 date=1210189120
Well, I'm in sort of a pickle here, people. I may need some suggestions from you all, as I do not really know of alot of RPG's outside of FF/DQ (Yes, it's pretty bad in a way, but still..) Anyway, on to the point!

Me and my friend have decided to pick up a game and start it at the same time. What is the point of this? We don't know yet. Ha ha. We will get to that later. However, it's the game it's self we are having trouble finding. He is not the BIGGEST fan of RPG's, but he still likes them (has played FF X, some DQ 8, Kingdom Hearts, and...I think that is it.)

Now...I'm trying to find a game that is not all that long, is an RPG for the SNES, and is fun to play with a bit of difficulty, yet not so difficult it makes you frustrated. Something in the 30-40 Hour range is a no-no for us. Any suggestions?
The problem with playtime is that it depends on how you play and your familiarity with the game. Take Chrono Trigger for example--these days I could probably finish the whole thing in twenty hours max, but back in the day when I first played it, not as familiar with the conventions of RPGs and not knowing where things were, it was a much more epic proposition.

At any rate, there's a pretty big range of RPGs to choose from. Some more specific criteria might be helpful. Most importantly, do you want something where you have time to decide what you want to do, or something more action-y? There's a big difference between Earthbound and Terranigma, for examplem even though they're both great games. (They're both probably more difficult and long than you'd like though)

Anime... I used to be more interested in it till I found out how shitty the fanbase was for it. Every now and then, I'll go on a downloading spree and find some series I haven't watched before, glue myself to it like honey on a bear's ass-- and lose interest for three months before finally watching the last three epsiodes.
<fate/staynight/> lol
You can't allow your own interests to be defined by the fanbases of the material. Not only is it madness, but it's slavery to PR, and it makes it impossible to like....well anything. Because just about anything worth experiencing is going to have people who are way too into it, and those people are always going to be annoying.

Attribute matching....I just don't know about it anymore, man. I'm not sure there's a whole lot more to be gotten out of it. Making up new elements, using the old ones...

...in the end it all comes down to Rock Paper Scissors. The type dominance and whatnot is pretty much an arbitrary assignment. It adds a little extra depth to gameplay, but...

...but it's the only real strategic aspect to most RPGs. It feels like wading into the pool but not jumping in. I'm not sure what the solution is, but I think there needs to be something more done with RPSing.

There's probably an article to be had here, but I can't think of the main thrust of it right now. About making the most of the RPS mechanic, dressing it up in a way that players can both understand and not be bored by, and....I don't know. I really need to consider this in more detail. I'm having flashes of Sirlin's article about Game Balancing and Guilty Gear, like there's some sort of connection here that's just out of reach. We need more discussion about the general theory of elemental systems, and not just lists of what you've named your attributes and how many you've got. Guys! Don't fail me!

I hear they're planning more Spiderman movies and theres a new Hulk coming out?
Not to mention 2 new X-men movies? Jesus, Marvel is killing the movie industry nowadays...

Let's hope Dark Knight is worth watching...

~Sion
They're planning to do a movie for each of the better-known Avengers (so basically everyone but Ant-Man and Wasp), including a second Hulk movie, then actually doing the Avengers movie.

I hadn't heard about two new X-Men movies, but I know the Wolverine spinoff's on the way. Which I would be totally uninterested in, except that I heard that Ryan Reynolds is playing Deadpool in it. Which is actually kind of a shame because I kept holding out hopes they'd do a Deadpool movie out right (and had heard Ryan Reynolds was in talks to play him), but a little Deadpool's better than no Deadpool!

Now we just need a Great Lakes Initiative/Champions/Whatever movie.

I still want to see someone use the Four Fundamental Forces in place of elements. Figure out a good way of using Gravity, Electromagnetism, Weak Nucleic Force and Strong Nucleic Force, maybe tossing in Dark Energy for funsies.
You would need to add NERD as a fifth element seriously man you just managed to make yourself look like a dork at a homebrew game-making forum. I guess we can't call be like Fonz 8) 8) 8) 8)
T_T Is it....is it because I said "funsies?"

Question for lazy people

As a rule, we don't.

The only real option is to rid yourself of your laziness. Either by reworking who you are as a person or by finding the passion necessary to carry you through. Neither is easy.

demondestiny's anime topic!!!

Lately I've really been into Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei. I finally got around to watching Gurren Lagann and have fallen completely in love with it, too--it dispelled all the lingering badness that had been sewn by Evangelion. One of my favorite things about Gurren Lagann is that even as it makes fun of mecha anime, it really shows how much it loves the genre. It's not like Evangelion, where it feels like Anno really sort of hated the genre deep down--it's more like a Simon Pegg/Edgar Wright movie, where a fan points out how silly the whole thing is, but is totally comfortable with that.

In less recent terms, I think my favorite series of all time is Ouran High School Host Club. Ouran and SZS both have some sort of weird sensibility about them that are just outright amazing. They've got these weird styles of direction in the animated versions that just suit their senses of humor so perfectly. It's funny, because I still can't quite put my finger on what the similarity between them is (they're very different shows), but I definitely feel one, and that little element is probably what makes me love them both so much. I actually just got the first volume of the Ouran manga yesterday. It's bloody gorgeous, but it's taking some getting used to....the anime's director really added something to the series that as of yet isn't present in the manga.

OAV-wise, my favorite is FLCL. I'm not sure if I like FLCL more than Ouran or not, because I do love them both to a ridiculous degree.

How long can you tolerate dialogue to be?

I knew Xenogears 2nd disk would be brought up, and I agree, but for the sake of discussion, let's omit the 2nd disk from my example.
Even the first disc suffers from it to a certain extent, though. I've tried several times to go back and play it again (I can generally play games over and over again, given a few months' downtime), but no dice. Without the drive to get the answer to the next question, it loses a lot of its appeal. Especially when you know that it's not going to be long before you have to go through that freaking sewer dungeon again.

There's a lot of stuff you have to sit through, and it's hurt all the more by the mediocre translation job. If it had writing like the english version of FF12, even the heavy exposition might've been a lot more bearable, since what was going on there was more interesting than the plot in FF12....but not many games from that era did. For that matter, few games do these days(but at least that number's on the rise). Voice acting probably would've helped, too. And while I suppose one in a million amateur games might have writing up to the level of an FF12, Phoenix Wright or Paper Mario....there's basically no chance of getting good voice acting without a professional budget. It's hard enough to get good voice acting WITH a pro budget.

And yeah, republic's got the right idea. If you want to focus on dialogue and downplay gameplay, but still have an interactive element, adventure / visual novel is the way to go. The audience knows what to expect going into it. Plus, bigger character sprites (or are they even considered sprites if they have limited movement?) make it easier to relate to the characters.

How long can you tolerate dialogue to be?

Yeah, it's tough to hold up Xenogears as a good example of anything in light of Disc 2. I love the game to pieces but it's a deeply flawed experience on just about every level. It punishes you for loving it.
