Summer Movie Wager

Summer is over and the results are in!

The only change from last list was that Oppenheimer did in fact pass The Little Mermaid (by quite the margin even) which meant more points for our summer movie expert kentona

The final top 10 was:
1. Barbie
2. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
3. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3
4. Oppenheimer
5. The Little Mermaid
6. Sound of Freedom
7. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny
8. Mission Impossible - Dead Reckoning: Part One
9. Transformers: Rise of the Beasts
10. Elemental

Which meant the final point tally was:
1. kentona, 52 points
2. frogge, 39 points
3. Darken, 37 points
3. Shinan, 37 points
5. pianotm, 34 points
6. Dudesoft, 29 points

kentona truly running away with it in a summer that saw some pretty surprising surprises with Sound of Freedom messing it up for everyone.

Summer Movie Wager

Only a couple of weekends left of this summer movie wager (it ends on September 4th, the same day my summer vacation ends) and... there's basically only one thing still up in the air. Will Oppenheimer (at 278million at the time of writing) pass The Little Mermaid (at 297million at the time of writing) before the season ends?

If it does that'll mean even more points for kentona.

The current top 10s are:
1. Barbie, $567 million
2. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, $381 million
3. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, $359 million
4. The Little Mermaid, $297 million
5. Oppenheimer, $285 million
6. Sound of Freedom, $178 million
7. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, $174 million
8. Mission Impossible - Dead Reckoning: Part One, $165 million
9. Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, $157 million
10. Elemental, $151 million

Just outside the top 10 are:
Fast X, $146 million
The Flash, $108 million
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, $88 million

This weekend Blue Beetle opens and seems to open to similar numbers that Shazam 2 did and might get to 100 million some time in October.

When it comes to our scores it seems one person is just better than the rest of us at this.

1. kentona, 49 points
2. Darken, 39 points
2. frogge, 39 points
2. Shinan, 39 points
5. pianotm, 34 points
6. Dudesoft, 29 points

How many movies in the top 10 have you managed to see? I'm at 5/10 at the moment.

EDIT: Since the estimated weekend numbers are in I just edited in those. And from those I can see that Oppenheimer will almost definitely beat The Little Mermaid before the September 4 and that Blue Beetle opened at 25 million which is lower even than Shazam 2.

What exactly is and isn't allowed on this site when it comes to rips in our games?

tldr: It's okay to steal, it's not okay to get caught.

Summer Movie Wager

Going into the new weekend I thought I'd update as Barbie is now firmly in the #1 spot and points have changed yet again as Mission Impossible is back on the board.

The top 10 is as follows: 1. Barbie, 2. Spider-Verse 2, 3. Guardians 3, 4. The Little Mermaid, 5. Oppenheimer, 6. Indiana Jones 5, 7. Sound of Freedom, 8. Transformers, 9. Mission Impossible 7, 10. Elemental

Which leads us to how the board looks:
1. kentona, 44 points
2. Darken, 41 points
3. frogge, 39 points
4. Shinan, 36 points
5. pianotm, 32 points
6. Dudesoft, 29 points

The changes I am still seeing on the horizon are Sound of Freedom passing Indy 5 and Mission Impossible passing Transformers. There's also a tiny chance that Elemental might pass Transformers but it's a close race, the gap is around 10 million and Elemental has been doing about 2million more a week than Transformers recently but that means it'll probably not pass Transformers before all of this is over.

Of any new releases I don't really foresee any of them cracking the top 10. TMNT would need another 100 million to get there and unless Blue Beetle has an insane opening (it won't) there aren't really any true contenders for the top 10 anymore. But placements are still up for grabs!

Pokemon just revealed the SV DLC OST and it consists entirely of stolen fan-music from YouTube. How is this legal? And the musitians can't even fight it in court because they're poor hobbyists fighting a billion dollar corporation.

Well the wording on the legal page says
Distribution in any form and any channels now known or in the future of derivative works based on the copyrighted property trademarks, service marks, trade names and other proprietary property (Fan Art) of The Pokémon Company International, Inc., its affiliates and licensors (Pokémon) constitutes a royalty-free, non-exclusive, irrevocable, transferable, sub-licensable, worldwide license from the Fan Art's creator to Pokémon to use, transmit, copy, modify, and display Fan Art (and its derivatives) for any purpose.
so what they are actually saying is that anyone creating fan art grants the pokemon company a license to use their (copyrighted) stuff for any purpose. They aren't claiming they made or own what you made. Just that by using their assets you also consented to having the stuff you made be licensed by the pokemon company. (royalty-free)

Of course it is also true, like you are saying, that these things are a bit like EULAs in that they might not actually be that enforceable.

I guess the second part of what I quoted is actually pretty terrible and should in fact make it so that no one should make pokemon fan art ever :D
No further consideration or compensation of any kind will be given for any Fan Art. Fan Art creator gives up any claims that the use of the Fan Art violates any of their rights, including moral rights, privacy rights, proprietary rights publicity rights, rights to credit for material or ideas or any other right, including the right to approve the way such material is used. In no uncertain terms, does Pokémon's use of Fan Art constitute a grant to Fan Art's creator to use the Pokémon intellectual property or Fan Art beyond a personal, noncommercial home use.

But Nintendo are notoriously awful aren't they.

In fact, Game Freak are legally entitled to do so:
https://www.pokemon.com/us/legal/
These are rules written by big corporations to claim ownership of art they didn't make. Are these rules legal ?

Fan art in general is a breach of copyright but I guess the copyright holder can be gracious enough to allow people to make fan art as the pokemon company has done there. It's perfectly legal and easier than having to give specific permission to everyone who asks to make something derivative of the stuff you own.

Summer Movie Wager

Yeah that dark money certainly messed up the list quite a bit.

Summer Movie Wager

Things are happening fast now and I want to save this temporary snapshot while Barbenheimer and Sound of Freedom are shooting up the ranks. Mostly to witness my gigantic downfall.
After this weekend the top 10 looks to be as follows: 1. Spider-Verse, 2. Guardians 3, 3. Barbie, 4. The Little Mermaid, 5. Oppenheimer, 6. Indy 5, 7. Transformers, 8. Sound of Freedom, 9. Fast X, 10. Elemental

Which means the current scores are:
1. kentona, 50 points
2. frogge, 48 points
3. Dudesoft, 40 points
3. Darken, 40 points
5. pianotm, 37 points
6. Shinan, 31 points

But by this time next week everything is likely to have changed again. My prediction is that Fast X will leave the top 10 completely as Elemental and Mission Impossible (currently #11) will pass it. Sound of Freedom will continue its insane rise and will close in on Indy 5 (or pass it). Barbie will be the new #1
I feel like Oppenheimer is a bit too far away from Little Mermaid to pass it but who knows, anything can happen.
